Chinese ambassador suggests renaming CPEC to deal with issues in India

Also suggested India to join OBOR

Luo Zhaohui, the Chinese ambassador in India recently mentioned that Beijing is prepared to rename the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to address issues in India. The Chinese foreign ministry didn’t respond if it is for or against the statement made by the ambassador. This is getting deciphered as the ministry’s support for Luo’s statement.

Last week in Delhi, the ambassador made a speech that China might rename CPEC and to deal with issues in India China might build a substitute corridor through Jammu & Kashmir, Nathu La pass or Nepal.

Along with the statement came a suggestion of India joining One Belt One Road (OBOR) connectivity plan.

On Thursday the foreign ministry said (according to a translation of ther Ministry’s statement): “CPEC is an economic cooperation initiative that has nothing to do with territorial sovereignty disputes, and does not affect China’s and Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir issue.”

“CPEC is a framework for cooperation focusing on the long-term development of cooperation in all fields. It is in the interest of both China and Pakistan. It is also conducive to promoting regional stability and development.”

India has turned down the offer of joining OBOR and that has become a major obstacle in OBOR’s growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had cleared that while the major western countries has sent official delegates, India happened to be the first major country not to attend the OBOR forum in Beijing in May.
