Greenport Nigeria is creating the groundwork for Nigeria to achieve food sovereignty

Greenport Nigeria, a greenhouse horticulture impact cluster is revolutionizing the agriculture sector in Nigeria.

Greenport Nigeria seeks to significantly advance the cause of food sovereignty, which is the right of individuals to determine their own food and agricultural systems and has become a top priority in Nigeria.

The cluster brings together a group of national and international partners, including the African Farmers Stories Initiative, Eupesia Place Nigeria, Viscon NL, Priva NL, Seed2Feed NL, Leiden Delft Erasmus NL, JMSF Agribusiness Nigeria Ltd, and Koppert Biological Systems NL.

Together, innovators will employ their collective knowledge and technological advancements to build a self-sufficient greenhouse horticulture industry in Nigeria, where locally grown foods will serve as the foundation of the nation’s food supply.

Greenport Nigeria added that it would offer the most recent advances in greenhouses, biological pest management methods, and seed technology, creating a sustainable agriculture model that could be applied throughout Nigeria.

With a goal of empowering the following generation of horticulturists and advancing inclusive, sustainable agriculture, the RVO-funded initiative Greenport Nigeria is creating the groundwork for Nigeria to achieve food sovereignty. The impact cluster will teach local farmers the most up-to-date methods and technologies with the help of its partners, enabling them to cultivate crops to feed the community and generate a steady source of revenue.

By taking these initiatives, Greenport Nigeria is paving the way for a more sustainable and secure food system in Nigeria. By supporting the development of the greenhouse horticulture industry and empowering local farmers, the impact cluster hopes to protect the nation’s food sovereignty and create a better future for generations to come.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s agriculture sector sees a nominal growth of 14.88% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022. Crop Production, which accounted for 91.6% of the sector in the third quarter of 2022 is still the industry’s key driver. Agriculture contributed to 22.35% of the overall Gross Domestic Product between January and March 2022.
