Japan-based mid-size carrier Air Do and Solaseed Air have announced that they will establish a new joint company in October 2022. Regional carriers Air Do, which is based in Hokkaido, and Solaseed Air, based in Miyazaki, signed a ‘basic agreement’. The recent developments come at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic has battered the aviation industry. Last year, Air Do had a net loss of ¥12.1 billion and Solaseed Air had a net loss of ¥7.6 billion.

Despite the merger, both Air Do and Solaseed will continue to retain their distinct brands post-merger. However, according to the carriers, they will aim to further reduce costs by standardising operations and streamline their organisation structure.

In a joint statement, the carriers said, “In order to quickly recover the damaged financial base of both companies, survive the new business environment, provide more added value to customers, and achieve sustainable growth…the … cooperative relationships between the two companies will be further deepened.”

Last year, it was reported that the Japanese government is mulling merging both All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines to help the carrier survive the Covid-19 crisis. The idea to merge both carriers has come from Heizo Takenaka, a former minister and advisor to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

Both ANA and Japan Airlines are major international carriers and are among the biggest carriers in Asia, carrying nearly 100 million passengers between them. The carriers are also rivals with similar fleets and competing on similar routes.

Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has announced that it will aim for zero net emission by 2050 to become a net zero carbon dioxide airline, media reports said. The carrier earlier planned to cut emissions by half during the same period, however, now it has upgraded its goals.

ANA President and chief executive Shinya Katanozaka told the media, “Sustainability and innovation are both central components of our vision at ANA HD, and we are excited about the opportunity to make meaningful change as we work to advance our ambitious ESG agenda. Achieving net zero emissions will require us to pursue a number of initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint across the organisation, but our entire team is committed to doing all we can to make ANA HD an example of sustainability in our practices.”

ANA is also planning to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Even though SAF is more expensive than traditional jet fuel, it is sustainable and more and more carriers across the globe are expected to start using it.

Last month, it was reported that ANA is planning to operate its Boeing 777 freighter to Los Angeles from its base at Tokyo Narita Airport. The first flight to Los Angeles is expected to take off on April 23rd.

In this regard, Toshiaki Toyama, Executive Vice President of ANA and President of ANA Cargo told the media, “A number of factors have led to increased demand for cargo flights connecting Japan and North America…We are proud to have a fleet of capable aircraft that is able to meet the demand and support global supply chains in operation at this critical time.”

All Nippon Airways(ANA), which is one of Japan’s biggest carriers, has said that it will retire its fleet of Boeing 777s ahead of schedule, media reports said. ANA said that with the early retirement of its Boeing 777s, a greater number of long-haul flights would be operated by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Currently, ANA has 50 Boeing 777s in its fleet out of which 12 are listed as parked. Last October, the carrier retired seven Boeing 777s. The carrier is looking to get its business back on track after weathering the Covid-19 crisis and has revealed that the core of its earnings for the fiscal year of 2021 would be made up of domestic operations.

Last year, it was reported that the Japanese government is mulling merging both All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines to help the carriers survive the Covid-19 crisis. The idea to merge both carriers has come from Heizo Takenaka, a former minister and advisor to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

South Korean aviation giants Korean Air and Asiana announced a similar plan to merge their businesses in order to sustain their operations. Both ANA and Japan Airlines are in need of government aid to weather the Covid-19 storm, and hence a merger would make sense for the carriers.

Both ANA and Japan Airlines are major international carriers and are among the biggest carriers in Asia, carrying nearly 100 million passengers between them. The carriers are also rivals with similar fleets and competing on similar routes. A potential merger between ANA and Japan Airlines would create one of the biggest airlines in Asia.

Australian flag carrier Qantas has announced that it has applied to domestic regulatory bodies to form a joint venture with Japan Airlines (JAL), media reports said. Qantas has submitted an application for authorisation to regulators in Australia as well as New Zealand. A decision is expected within six months.

If approved, the joint venture with Japan Airlines would help Qantas revive its international operations and weather the Covid-19 storm which has brought havoc in the aviation industry. It is reported that Qantas customers would have access to 14 new codeshare destinations in Japan, whereas, Japan Airlines’ customers would have access to 15 new codeshare destinations in Australia and New Zealand.

Qantas Group chief executive officer Alan Joyce told the media, “Around half a million people visited Australia from Japan in 2019. We want to see that tourism resume and grow even further by making it easier for Japanese travellers to visit. It will be a win for our customers, a win for trade and a win for the one million people who work in tourism across Australia.”

The Japanese government is mulling merging both All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines to help the carrier survive the Covid-19 crisis, according to reports in the media. The idea to merge both carriers has come from Heizo Takenaka, a former minister and advisor to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

Recently, South Korean aviation giants Korean Air and Asiana announced a similar plan to merge their businesses in order to sustain their operations.

However, no decision has been taken as of yet and the idea has only been floated unofficially. No prominent decision from the Japanese government can be expected within a short period of time.

Last month, Japan Airlines forecasted a record operating loss of as much as ¥380 billion yen for the year through March because of the coronavirus pandemic. The carrier also announced that it would retire 24 of its Boeing 777 aircraft to sustain its business amid the difficult times. During the same period, ANA also said that it would retire more than a tenth of its Boeing fleet and delay two aircraft orders for similar reasons.

All Nippon Airways, Japan’s largest and 5-star airline for six consecutive years, is proud to announce that its first Airbus A380 has rolled out of the AirbusPaintshop in Hamburg, Germany. The new plane is Japan’s first Airbus A380 and sports a Hawaiian green sea turtle, known as “Honu” in the Hawaiian language, which symbolises good luck and prosperity.

Each of ANA’s three Airbus A380s will feature livery in different colors and with different designs. The blue livery of the first aircraft connects ANA’s corporate color scheme with Hawaii’s blue skies. The second aircraft, planned to start operation in July 2019, will have emerald green livery that is inspired by the crystal clear waters of Hawaii while the third will be orange in reference to the beautiful Hawaiian sunset.

“We are excited to showcase the largest passenger aircraft and even more excited about the experience it will offer travelers on the Narita-Honolulu route,” said Yutaka Ito, Executive Vice President of ANA. “The Airbus A380 will be an important addition to ANA’s current fleet and it will allow passengers to reach the scenic islands of Hawaii in comfort and style. The customised livery adds a personal touch that will make the trip that much more memorable.”

ANA is set to receive the new A380 jet, nicknamed FLYING HONU, in March 2019, with the inaugural flight scheduled to depart from Tokyo Narita Airport and travel to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu on May 24, 2019.

This new aircraft is a reflection of ANA’s continual efforts to improve the travel experience while helping passengers reach the world’s premier tourist destinations. The Flying Honu theme shows the airline’s commitment to getting every detail right on every flight.
