Vertex, a Pennsylvania-based tax technology firm, announced CEO David DeStefano’s retirement and named former Microsoft executive Christopher Young as his successor.

DeStefano joined Vertex in 1999 as CFO and became CEO in 2016, leading the company through its initial public offering (IPO) in 2020, the expansion of its cloud-native solutions, and several strategic acquisitions, including AI tax capabilities from Texas-based Ryan in 2024, and a 10% stake in SME compliance technology vendor Kintsugi for USD 15 million in May 2025.

DeStefano will step into a non-executive chair role, and newly appointed CEO Young will also sit on the nine-member board of directors at Vertex, bringing over three decades of technology leadership experience to the position.

Christopher Young was executive vice president of business development at Microsoft until March 2025, where he oversaw the business development, venture investing, and corporate strategy groups, apart from being responsible for the investment strategy for Microsoft, including investments in AI and other emerging technologies.

Young has also been CEO of cybersecurity company McAfee, where he oversaw the spin-off from Intel in 2017, as well as senior vice president at Cisco and vice president of safety and security premium services at AOL. His board experience includes previous roles at Rapid7 and Snap, in addition to his current role on American Express’ board.

Meet Christopher Young

Christopher Young was born in the United States. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Boston College. He continued his education at Harvard Business School, earning an MBA degree. This degree equipped him with the strategic and leadership skills needed for his future roles in the healthcare sector.

Before joining Vertex, Christopher Young worked in various leadership positions across consulting and the pharmaceutical industry. He worked as an advisor at McKinsey & Company. He used to advise healthcare clients on strategic and management issues. This experience formed the groundwork for his transition to the biotechnology industry. In the biotechnology industry, he honed his expertise in corporate development and commercialisation.

Christopher Young joined Vertex Pharmaceuticals in 2017. He joined as a Chief Business Officer, overseeing the company’s global commercial strategy and operations. His role played a major role in the company’s continued success. This helped the company advance treatments for cystic fibrosis. He guided Vertex not only on cystic fibrosis but also in expanding the company’s pipeline to include genetic medicines and gene-editing technologies.

The company strengthened its position as a leader in biotechnology under Young’s leadership. He also made sure that the company was in strategic partnerships, including a collaboration with CRISPR Therapeutics. Vertex worked on gene-editing technologies, further broadening the company’s capabilities in treating genetic diseases. His vision continues to develop groundbreaking therapies that transform the lives of patients worldwide.

US-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology giant Pfizer is set to acquire the remaining shares of Trillium Therapeutics in a deal worth $2.26 billion, media reports said. The drugmaker will buy the shares for $18.50 a piece, representing a 203.8 percent premium.

Pfizer previously bought stakes in Trillium Therapeutics last year in a deal worth $25 million. Trillium develops drugs that boost patients’ innate immune systems to detect and destroy cancer cells.

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted full approval to Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine for people who are 16 and older.

Dr. Janet Woodcock, the acting FDA commissioner, said in a statement, “While millions of people have already safely received COVID-19 vaccines, we recognize that for some, the FDA approval of a vaccine may now instill additional confidence to get vaccinated. Today’s milestone puts us one step closer to altering the course of this pandemic in the US.”

In May, it was reported that Spain is set to receive almost 94 million doses of Pfizer vaccine to help fight the country against Covid-19. A government spokeswoman announced that between December 2021 and June 2023, the country will receive these doses, which is a part of the European Union purchase.

She also said that the number of vaccine doses sent to the country is equivalent to twice the target population. It is also important to keep in mind that 8.1 million people have already received their full course of vaccinations in Spain.

The post Is the rise of biotechnology Covid-19 induced? appeared first on International Finance.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, healthcare has been a sector that has gained prominence in the last 18 months or so. Investment in healthcare skyrocketed in the last year. According to McKinsey, between 2019 and 2020, biotechnology companies saw a double digital growth in fundraising from venture capitalists. The number of biotech companies going public also increased threefold during the period. It is also outperforming pharmaceuticals. So, is the growth of biotech companies Covid-19 induced or will the sector manage to sustain the growth for a longer period of time? What we can say is that given the fast-paced advancement in biological science and the developments in technology such as artificial intelligence, the potential to take innovation to a new level is very high.

Impact of Covid-19 on the biotech industry
The Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on the biotech industry will be the widespread and long-lasting. The biotech industry had an instrumental role to play in the development of Covid-19 vaccine, that too in record time. But the pandemic’s role in shaping the industry won’t fade away even as the vaccines are administered across the globe.

Over the last two decades, we have witnessed a number of epidemics, be it SARS in China, Ebola in Africa, or the Covid-19 epidemic, also in China. What has changed now is people are aware that the possibility of another pandemic in the near future is moderate to high. Covid-19 pandemic caught us off guard. The healthcare sectors in many countries were stressed beyond imagination.
Given the advancement of technology, there is also a chance we could possibly predict where the next pandemic will break out and even develop a cure to prevent casualties. The biotech industry needs to need to prepare for adverse events because they will happen.

More broadly, what Covid-19 has done is that it brought biological science to the attention of healthcare workers, agencies, governments as well as the general public. So, biotech companies and their ecosystems are expected to continue to scale up rapidly and keep riding the wave in the near future.

Rise of the biotechnology sector
Buoyed up by advances in science and technology and the Covid-19 pandemic, the biotech sector attracted record levels of investment through 2020 and into early 2021. VC investment in biotech companies across the globe grew by 45 percent in a year, taking the 2020 global total to $36.6 billion. While the US was on the top when it comes to investments, Europe was not far behind followed by China. Particularly in Europe, funding size grew at more than twice the rate than in the US, according to McKinsey. While in China, the number of funding rounds increased fourfold when compared to Europe and the US.

Deals such as partnerships, joint ventures, licensing agreements also doubled between 2019 and 2020 to reach $170.6 billion. During the period, we witnessed biotech companies partnering with big pharma companies, other biotech companies and a broad range of other organisations. Many big pharma companies have also acquired biotech companies to sustain their portfolio strategy while also pursuing pipeline and top-line growth.

Biotech companies across the globe raised $34.3 billion in 2020 by going public, an increase of 186 percent on the previous year. It is, without doubt, IPO activity has grown faster than any other category of fundraising. While most of the biotech companies that went public were located in the US, companies in other parts of the world such as China, have also seen significant growth in the past few years.

Germany-based biotechnology company BioNTech wants to eradicate malaria by using the revolutionary mRNA technology, media reports said. The same technology was used to develop the vaccine for the Covid-19 virus.

BioNTech has revealed that it will begin clinical malaria vaccine trials by the end of 2022. Malaria kills around 400,000 people each year, many of them being African children.

BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin said in a statement, “We will do whatever it takes to develop a safe and effective mRNA-based malaria vaccine that will prevent the disease, reduce mortality and ensure a sustainable solution for the African continent and other regions affected by this disease.”

The breakthrough project is being backed by the World Health Organization, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the European Union.

Earlier this year, BioNTech announced that along with Pfizer, they have signed agreements to deliver 1.8 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines this year, which is a big jump, considering 1.4 billion announced in March.

While releasing the statement of the first-quarter results, they also focused on the fact that the output capacity for the vaccine would reach around 3 billion doses by the end of 2021, and they expect to produce another 3 billion doses by the end of 2022.

Both BioNTech and Pfizer have not faced production setbacks which were witnessed by AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. BioNTech also unveiled plans to set up a new factory in Singapore where they are expected to produce several hundred million doses of mRNA vaccines every year from 2023.

There’s no denying that there has been financial problems over the years for some countries in Europe, causing many businesses to drift away from the idea of tackling the market. However, Greece’s financial crisis has finally ended, and other countries are developing at rapid rates — something investors should take note of.

Today, more investors are looking to the Eurozone for their business ventures. But which industries are thriving in different countries?

Spain: A Focus On Fashion

More UK fashion companies are making the shift overseas to Spain — take going out dresses retailer QUIZ for example, who have recently opened up in Madrid. Spain is possibly one of the biggest hotspots for tourism and this is one of the main drives for retail sales. Euromonitor International found that Spain’s employment rate dropped to a low of 17% in 2017, which has had a positive impact on fashion sales as more people have shown a willingness to spend more on clothes.

For the industry itself, an annual growth of 11% is expected to arise between 2018 and 2022 — taking the market value up to $6.728m. Francesc Maristany, former president of Catalan Cluster of Fashion, commented: “Some people come for the luxury tourism and realise there are smaller brands with great products and excellent branding, and become drawn to them.” This shows that there has never been a better time than now to expand into Spain.

France: A Focus On Artificial Intelligence

Did you know that Paris has passed London as the most lucrative market in Europe for foreign investors? Although you may be making investments at home, it’s crucial to start looking at shifting your finances into opportunities in France.

The introduction of artificial intelligence is thriving in France, with companies and governments making use of it. Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has launched an initiative that will position the country as a leader in the field. Through this scheme, €1,5 billion will be invested in AI projects and start-ups. Is this something that your business could benefit from?

Germany: A Focus On Biotechnology

Foreign investment is at an all-time in Germany, so it would be foolish not to look into the country. So much so, that a total of 1,063 investment projects were launched in the country over the past 12 months. Within the same time frame, 7,785 jobs were created in Germany by external European companies — highlighting the number of opportunities across the country that must be taken advantage of.

The country is exceeding well in research and development, too. Germany prides itself on constant innovation and is known to have the most biotechnology firms on the continent, which has had a positive impact on employment across the nation.

Portugal: A Focus On Real Estate

Titled the most peaceful country in Europe, Portugal is thriving in real estate investments and general trade. However, it must be noted that the country’s Golden Visa Scheme has encouraged more foreign investments in property, as residency comes with an array of benefits, including education, healthcare, social security, tax concessions, and more.

Did you know that the gross rental yields in the country are one of the highest in the continent? 5% to 14% is realistic for the right property. Have you considered setting aside investments and obtaining a visa to a foreign country to obtain great financial benefits? Now might be the time!

The Netherlands: A Focus On Creative Industries (Advertising, TV, Music, and Gaming)

It’s believed that The Netherlands is one of the most innovative countries in the world. As a result, it is home to some of the leading creative brands. Amsterdam, in particular, is a hotspot for creativity. Its metropolitan area offers world-class infrastructures and Europe’s fastest broadband speeds – essential qualities for this sector.

Almost 50% of investors think that the business climate in this country will improve significantly over the next three years, so researching early is essential. This is a positive sign, as last year, only 38% agreed. The capital city is known for its influential start-up scene, with a tech-savvy community and a diverse talent pool. To illustrate the love of creative start-up businesses, the opening of gaming companies alone increased by 42% between 2011 and 2016.

UK: A Focus On Digital

It’s no surprise that the digital scene in the UK occupies 27% of projects in Europe. As well as this, the sector seems to generate the largest number of projects in the country, which has led to an increase in employability with around 1.1m people in work.

The digital sector in the UK is growing quicker than the national economy and is improving regional areas. Because of this, the value of the industry was boosted to £184bn (2017) from £170bn, which was its estimated worth in 2016. Ignoring the opportunity to invest in the UK’s digital sector could be a big mistake.

Sweden: A Focus On Financial Technology (FinTech)

It’s known that Sweden is one of the biggest hot spots for foreign investment, especially around tech projects. This renowned status factored in the statistic that a large portion of its workforce are in tech-based jobs.

Stockholm is the second-most prolific tech hub in the world after Silicon Valley. This is a great achievement for the nation, as investment continues to grow. When it comes to emerging fintech trends, crowdfunding opportunities, mortgages and pensions are developing areas that are disrupting the industry positively.

Finland: A Focus On Clean Technology And Renewable Energy

It won’t be a surprise that Finland is the world’s greenest country and has a core focus on renewable energy. Because of this core focus, 38% of the nation’s energy is produced by renewables — which is only set to grow further with future investments and continued extensive research.

For venture capital investments, this country ranks quite high due to cleantech solutions. Because of its willingness to improve the climate of our planet, it is also home to Slush, which is one of the biggest technology-focused innovation conferences in the world.

The growth in both the global population, and its overall wealth, along with the declining birth rates in developed world can be attributed to this growing demographic imbalance. The incomes have also been rising in developing entries, making them step closer to the global middle class.

Populations getting wealthier has increased healthcare spending, and this has the possibility to put a far greater pressure on the healthcare sector to provide care solutions, that lie in accordance with the changes in lifestyle.

This trend thus, has offered a big opportunity to the biotechnology sector. The biotech sector primarily seeks to improve healthcare by treating diseases through clinical research and drug development. For long- term investors, it also offers the benefit of keeping the nature of its demand for products and services non-discretionary.

Having fallen sharply between late 2014 and 2016, the NASDAQ Biotechnology Index has been tracking steadily upward ever since. Despite its considerable growth potential and solid performance since 2017, the sector continues to trade at relatively attractive valuations; since the 2014-2016 selloff, the sector’s price-to-earnings ratio has languished below that of the broader market for the first time in history.

As any excess capital is generally reinvested into further research and development, the majority of returns from the biotech sector are driven by M&A (mergers and acquisitions) activity and – crucially – the number of new drug approvals in a given year. The latter is positive news for investors, as approvals are on track for near record levels in 2018, backing up strong years in 2015 and 2017.

US President Donald Trump himself has found himself on the biotech frontline when signing the ‘Right-to-try’ law—a legislation that permits terminally ill patients to bypass the FDA to gain faster, unhindered access to experimental treatments. While not universally supported, and without ethical constraints, this act should widen the pipeline of information on the effectiveness of potential new treatments.

However like all sectors, biotech has also shown to have weaknesses.

The most commonly highlighted risks are the binary nature of research results and the subsequent high beta price movements in individual companies. More recently, political pressures to address fears around drug pricing has also been mounting.

Biotechnology firm opens up new opportunities for the multi-billion dollar market

David Drake

October 31, 2014: As the biotech firm 22nd Century Group, Inc. (NYSE MKT: XXII) rang the closing bell on the New York Stock Exchange last Thursday, the multi-billion dollar tobacco industry is at the threshold of this firm’s biotechnological efforts as it went public.

The company has developed a technology based on genetic engineering and plant breeding techniques that they say can control the tobacco plant’s nicotine and nicotinic alkaloid levels. This allows them to grow the plant and reorient its addictive nicotine components without interfering with the taste that smokers are familiar with.

Biotechnology and cigarette smoking

With biotechnology, the company increased the nicotine level in the tobacco plant that aided them in developing “Red Sun” as a premium brand. It targets “upscale educated smokers” who are looking for a more highly differentiated, super premium brand. The premium cigarette sells at 10 to 15 percent premium than Marlboro and is top billed as the “Best Cigarette Ever Made”.

The company also developed other product offerings intended for the health-conscious populace that have developed a particular liking for cigarettes but do not want the negative effects that goes with it or plan to kick off the habit over time.

Its cessation aid product, called X-22, claims to reduce nicotine dependence among smokers. They say X-22 smells, smokes and tastes like the conventional cigarette, although it contains very low nicotine. It is currently under evaluation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Congress has given FDA the authority to reduce nicotine in cigarettes to almost zero. Thus, X-22 should have an advantage should it pass the FDA evaluation.

Its Brand A-coded product claims to have very low nicotine content. It is undergoing modified risk evaluation at FDA so it can be marketed in the country.

Its Brand B-coded product is said to have a tar to nicotine ratio of 6:1, which is lower than the average cigarette ratio of 13:1. This means that a smoker would inhale only 50 percent of the smoke present in an average cigarette. If this is approved by the FDA, this could be welcome news to the people who are at the receiving end of second-hand smoke which causes a variety of diseases.

These three products represent for the firm $1 billion opportunities of the target market segment they are aiming for, according to company press releases.

Using its technology to regulate nicotine levels in tobacco plants, the company is also working with Anandia to come up with Cannabis varieties that they said would give a more potent form of cannabinoids for use in the medical industry. Increasing potency would aid in improving production efficiency and lower costs. The Cannabis market is estimated to be worth over $30 billion in the US.

Market spread and delivery

Growing the plant and creating the products are half the challenge. Does the company have the distribution channel and mechanism to bring them to their target market?

To gain access to more wholesalers and retailers that carry only Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) brands, in September 2014 the company became a signatory to the US Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.

They also signed a worldwide research license agreement in October 2013 granting British American Tobacco (BAT) access to their technology. BAT’s presence in 180 countries means wider market reach for their products as well.

The firm also forged a consulting agreement with Crede Capital Group to advise on how to venture into new markets in Asia and China. Crede also invested $10 million in the company.

With good execution, these collaborations can potentially secure for them a wider market and more efficient delivery of their products.

Future outlook

Using biotechnology, the company aims to diversify its product lines in order to cater to the booming luxury market and the growing market that puts a premium on health and wellness.

Despite the possibility of their cessation aid products luring away smokers to eventually be non-smokers, the multi-billion dollar tobacco industry might still stand to profit. If their modified risk products get the nod of approval from the FDA, these new brands — with less nicotine or less smoke — could in fact create and sustain a new market out of people seeking both the smoking experience and a healthy lifestyle.

Their plans to conquer the luxury as well as health and wellness markets through biotechnology can be viewed as a strategic move as they venture into the stock market.

According to Bloomberg, the company’s loss of $6.7 million had grown to an even bigger loss of $26.2 million by December 2013, despite increased revenues from $18.8K to $7.3 million. In the same report, it says that the company has a strong balance sheet, that it has grown its cash reserves between 2010 and 2013 to as much as $5.8 million. It also highlighted that the company as among the most efficient in managing inventories. It has only 1,042.34 days of its Cost of Goods sold tied up in inventory.

With its price closing at $2.13 on the NYSE, the 22nd Century Group is an interesting company to watch.

David Drake is an early-stage equity expert and the founder and chairman of LDJ Capital, a New York City-based family office, and The Soho Loft Media Group, a global financial media company with divisions in Corporate Communications, Publications and Conferences.
