China’s logistics demand has grown by 9.4 percent during the first three quarters of 2021 when compared to the same period in 2020, despite the resurgence of Covid-19 cases, extreme weather conditions and power cuts in the country, according to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP).

During the period, the total value of goods in the logistics sector grew about $36.69 trillion, which is an 11.4 percent increase year-on-year.

CFLP further revealed that logistics demand generally maintained a recovery momentum since the beginning of the year, with its scale and growth rate higher than the same period before the pandemic.

Recently, it was reported that Alibaba’s logistics arm Cainiao Network announced a series of measures to boost its logistics capabilities for the upcoming 11.11 Global Shopping Festival. The firm aims to optimise the delivery of orders generated via the event by Alibaba’s cross-border e-commerce platforms to consumers across the globe.

Cainiao Network Chief Strategist and General Manager for Export Logistics William Xiong told the media, “Over the years, 11.11 has showcased the tremendous demand from consumers across the globe. In gearing up for another successful 11.11, technology plays a critical role in the seamless execution and delivery of billions of parcels globally.

“Behind every great shopping festival is great logistics efficiency and reliably meeting great consumer expectations. Our technology will accelerate the automation of every aspect of the delivery journey to create a truly global infrastructure that can bolster the e-commerce boom.”

Cainiao, the logistics arm of Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, will invest around HK$5 million to keep logistics flowing amid the Lunar new year shutdown, media reports said. The investment will help the company fund a 1,500-strong workforce across the full chain of logistics operations.

Ray Cheuk, head of operations (Hong Kong), Cainiao Global Supply Chain told the media, “With the pandemic, logistics has increasingly served as an essential service that connects people to goods, services and most importantly, their loved ones. During festivities such as this Lunar New Year, we hope that by keeping the logistics service running, we are creating opportunities for businesses to increase sales revenue and for consumers to connect with their loved ones by sending gifts across the border or to enjoy local produce without having to commute home.

“As Taobao and Tmall’s official logistics provider, we are always seeking new and better ways to deliver more value-added logistics services to benefit businesses and consumers,” he added.

Last month, it was reported that Cainiao is holding discussions with Chinese vaccine makers over logistics for the Covid-19 vaccine. It is reported that the company has established a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines to transport the vaccine to the Middle East and Africa.

Cainiao is also is set to drive digitalisation of last-mile logistics in Malaysia, media reports said. In order to do so, Cainiao has partnered with Yunda Express. It was reported that around 100 collection stations near communities and business districts across the country will be strategically set up, with plans to expand to 500 stations to include West Malaysia by 2022.

Cainiao is holding discussions with Chinese vaccine makers over logistics for Covid-19 vaccine. It is reported that the company has established a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines to transport the vaccine to the Middle East and Africa.

Cainiao is a logistics company established under Alibaba. It in fact strengthens delivery for the ecommerce giant’s marketplace, and seeks to ensure delivery of goods within 72 hours globally.

A spokesperson for Cainiao told the media “We are currently in discussion with some domestic Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers and international organisations on cooperation over Covid-19 vaccine logistics.” These include Sinovac Biotech, CanSinoBio and China National Pharmaceutical.

It is reported that China is making significant advances in the discovery of the vaccine and they are running into the final stages of clinical trials. This is to assess the efficacy of their Covid-19 vaccine candidates.

Cainiao said in a statement “This is China’s first cross-border medical cold chain route to be operated regularly and is certified to transport temperature-controlled medicines including Covid-19 vaccines.” During the pandemic, cold chain storage and transportation have become vital to transport the necessary medicines to countries across the world.

Pfizer, for instance, is required to be stored at temperatures of minus 70 degrees Celsius or below, media reports said. Also, for the Pfizer vaccine to be rolled out in India, its Indian subsidiary will have to approach the regulator and share the data that has been provided to the UK regulator. The Covid-19 pandemic has killed nearly 1.5 million people globally.

Cainiao Smart Logistics Network, the logistics arm of Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, is set to drive digitalisation of last-mile logistics in Malaysia, media reports said. In order to do so, Cainiao has partnered with Yunda Express.

Cainiao will drive the digitalisation in Malaysia’s last-mile delivery network through a comprehensive network of collection stations. It is reported that around 100 collection stations near communities and business districts across the country will be strategically set up, with plans to expand to 500 stations to include West Malaysia by 2022.

Au Yeong Shong Kwong, head of cross-border, Singapore and Malaysia, Cainiao Network told the media, “With the rise in ecommerce activities, we are also witnessing a shifting trend in customers’ last-mile delivery preferences. To cater to a more diverse customer base that is also purchasing a wider selection of products online, we are expanding the collection point to provide customers with greater flexibility and convenience. Collection stations offer more advantages compared to other modes of last-mile delivery options such as lockers and pickup points.”

He added, “Here, we are able to offer more space to accommodate odd-sized or larger parcels, longer operating hours, complimentary storage and more convenient locations to ease the collection process. The ultimate goal here is to diversify last-mile offerings to deliver greater customer service and satisfaction.”
Recently, Cainiao also ventured into Japan to provide comprehensive logistics service to importers and exporters there. Besides this, the company has also launched third-party logistics services in South Korea and an air charter service to Latin America.

Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba has established its logistics business in the Japanese market through its logistics arm Cainiao. The new establishment will provide comprehensive logistics services to importers and exporters in the country.

Brittain Ladd, chief marketing and supply chain officer at Pulse Integration, told the media, “Alibaba is moving as fast as possible to expand into 3PL services. Like Amazon, they understand that the big growth area for retail is in providing logistics services. Amazon has every intention of becoming a 3PL and Alibaba has to get ahead of this.”

Last month, the Chinese giant had launched its third-party logistics services in South Korea, in addition to an air charter service in North America. It is reported that the company is working to surpass the efforts of its rival Amazon in extending end-to-end logistics services. These services will be beyond its own delivery requirements to other companies.

The logistics arm is using a cloud-based platform to connect cargo owners and transport service providers, media reports said. By the numbers, there is more than 162,000 square feet of warehouse space located near the Incheon International Airport, along with Incheon and Buson ports.

It is reported that China is South Korea’s largest trading partner. The country accounts for $160 billion, or 26 percent of total exports, while imports are worth $107 billion, or 21 percent of the total. Cainiao will handle global shipments with six container vessels and six cargo planes each week.

A new efulfilment hub developed by Malaysia Airports and Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba Group has begun operation in Malaysia, media reports said. The new efulfilment hub is a project under the electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP).

Known as the Cainiao Aeropolis eWTP Hub, it is a joint venture between Malaysia Airports and Alibaba Group. Previously it was known as KLIA Aeropolis DFTZ Park. The project is expected to facilitate 24-hour delivery within Malaysia for ecommerce operators, and also create a 72-hour delivery time frame to the rest of the world.

The hub spans 60 acres with 1.1 million sq ft of warehouse space and it is expected to double KUL’s cargo volume to 1.4 million per year by 2029.

Group chief executive officer at Malaysia Airports, Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh told the media, “We are targeting vertical markets from the automotive, sporting goods, fast-moving fashion and lifestyle, retail electronics and medical equipment sectors, among others.

“With the growth in cargo volume, we are looking at improved airline connectivity via KUL with new routes and increase in flight frequency, belly space utilisation and freighter capacity. We hope to double the current number of freighter flights in the next 10 years. Existing airline partners at KUL will enjoy new business yield while we create a synergistic partnership with local industry players e.g. Pos Aviation, MABKargo and GTR to integrate existing facility within the Cainiao Aeropolis eHub, Malaysia while the final mile delivery for the fulfilment of the goods will be operated by GDex, Pos Laju, J&T Express and others.”
