China-based mono-crystalline solar cells and modules manufacturer Longi Solar is set to supply 64 MW of modules for projects in Denmark and Portugal, media reports said.

Longi has received the orders from Eurowind Energy, which has ordered a 22-MW batch for the Portuguese scheme, while 42MW will be delivered for two hybrid projects in Denmark. The order is part of the framework agreement previously signed in May.

Eurowind Energy chief executive Jens Rasmussen told the media, “Placing this order shows our commitment to solar PV from the Portuguese to the Danish markets. This is another proof that solar is a fully integrated part of our business alongside our wind portfolio.

“We look forward to seeing the panels arriving from Longi Solar’s facilities and begin the installation. We are comfortable that Longi Solar will deliver on time and with the same high quality, they have become known for.”

Longi Solar also supplied 477 MW of modules for the Sol do Sertao solar project in Bahia, Brazil.

Recently, it was reported that Chinese renewable energy firm Trina Solar will supply modules to the Futura 1 photovoltaic project in Brazil. Futura 1 will comprise three phases, made up of 22 individual facilities developed by Focus Energia, at Juazeiro in the Bahia region. The first phase of which will have a capacity of 850 MW.

China is planning to raise its power generation from renewable energy to around 11 percent in 2021 from 9.7 percent in 2020, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA). It further revealed that solar and wind power generation in China will need to increase each year over the next five years and to reach around 16.5 percent of total power use by 2025.

According to the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC), hydrogen will account for 10 percent of China’s total energy mix by 2050. In a newsletter, the council said that renewable energy investments in China will increase in the coming years. China is already targeting to reach about 15 percent of renewable hydrogen energy generation by 2030.

The council said, “China is not alone in seeing growing momentum behind hydrogen technologies. The global platinum demand impact of announced green hydrogen policies is clearly sizeable over the longer term; current European Union and China green hydrogen generation capacity targets alone would require, cumulatively, between 300 000 oz and 600 000 oz of platinum by 2030.”

According to a white paper called ‘Energy in China’s New Era’ which was published last year, preliminary figures show that in 2019, coal consumption accounted for 57.7 percent of China’s total energy consumption, which is a decrease of 10.8 percent from 2012. On the other hand, the consumption of clean energy which includes natural gas, hydropower, nuclear power and wind power, accounted for 23.4 percent of total energy consumption, an increase of 8.9 percent since 2012.

According to a report compiled by the National Energy Administration China’s natural gas consumption was expected to reach 320 billion cubic metres in 2020. China’s natural gas consumption was expected to increase by 13 billion cubic metres last year. This is mainly due to the country’s efforts to ramp up its exploration and development activities when it comes to natural gas. The report also revealed that in 2019, China’s natural gas imports increased by 6.9 percent to 135.2 billion cubic metres. However, imports were down in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Chinese solar company Artech Solar is planning to raise around $206 million in an initial public offering (IPO) on Star Market, the media reported.

Artech Solar, which is a world-leading solar tracking, racking and BIPV system provider, will use the funds raised through its IPO to develop its manufacturing base and research centre.

State-owned SDIC Capital’s Essence Securities is the acting underwriter, according to reports.

Artech Solar’s primary business is solar panel installations across residential communities, commercial buildings, and industrial spaces.

According to the company, it has completed nearly 900 projects in 24 different countries across the globe. It’s main overseas markets are Mexico, the UAE, Vietnam, Chile, Australia, Spain, among others.

Artech Solar officially launched its Smart Rooftop II BIPV System at the SNEC 2020.

Mr. Shijun Zhou, Head of Arctech Solar’s BIPV Business said at Smart Rooftop II BIPV release conference, “The whole industry is embracing a booming market of BIPV system now, especially for the large-scale industrial plants which constructed 10 years ago, are now entering the phase of replacement. With BIPV’s multiple benefits, we believe it will be the ideal choice for industrial and commercial roof replacement. Compared with BAPV, the Arctech Solar Smart Rooftop II BIPV system has a higher power generation capacity, longer lifetime, and most importantly, the lower overall cost for investors.”

According to Global Market Insights’ recent report on the solar PV mounting system market, the valuation for solar PV mounting systems will cross $16 billion by 2026.

China alone supplies more than 50% of solar equipment to the world

The post Coronavirus pandemic to severely impact the renewable energy sector appeared first on International Finance.

The first case of coronavirus was reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year, and since then, more than 150 other countries have reported positive cases of the virus. To curb the spread of the deadly pathogen, many countries have entered into a state of lockdown, sealed borders and restricted travel. This has resulted in a major disruption in the global supply chain network across various sectors including renewable energy. China, where the outbreak took place, supplies more than 50 percent of the renewable energy equipment to the world. Major producers of renewable solar equipment such as Trina Solar, Yingli, Hanwa, Jinko Power and Rene Solar are all based in China.

China also dominates the market when it comes to wind energy equipment. Many countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East are dependent on China for wind energy equipment. China-based wind equipment suppliers such as GE, Siemens, Xinjiang Goldwin, and others have faced production shutdowns due to the pandemic. This has resulted in disruptions in supply chain which has inversely resulted in shutting down of projects in other parts of the world. Many countries in Europe, as well as the US, are heavily dependent on China for renewable energy components. The failure to meet demand is expected to severely impact the global renewable energy sector.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that the pandemic has already pushed the global economy into a recession. The fund even warned that the repercussion could be more severe than the financial crisis in 2008. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) predicts that the solar sector could lose up to 120,000 of its nearly 250,000 jobs—approximately half of its workforce—in the face of this crisis. In light of the ongoing recession, many fear that investments in renewable energy could take a back seat because renewable energy is expensive compared to other energy sources such as fossil fuel. Governments might begin to prioritise rebuilding of their economies in the pursuit of clean energy.
