Having repeatedly been proven wrong over the past year, economists and central bankers have found it uncomfortable to attempt to predict when the current wave of inflation will peak.

However, the question of whether the worst may be over after a year of explosive price growth was expected to be revived by data released recently that indicated that some inflation gauges had moderated in the two largest economies in the world.

Owing to a dramatic decline in the price of gasoline, consumer prices in the United States did not increase in July compared to June. This provided much-needed comfort to American customers on edge due to consistent price increases over the previous two years.

And while consumer prices increased less than anticipated, factory-gate inflation in China slowed to a 17-month low annually.

Most central bankers, including the US Federal Reserve, have given up trying to pinpoint the precise time when they anticipate the present rate of price growth to peak after wrongly predicting last year that high inflation would be a temporary one.

According to US Central Bank: The second half of the year will see a slowdown in inflation

According to the European Central Bank: The third quarter will be the peak

According to the Bank of England: October will be the month

Here are some of the key data molding the inflation debate:

Raw materials getting cheaper

Energy and other raw materials, which were mostly to blame for the rise in consumer prices last winter, could portend lesser inflation this time around.

After surging earlier this year, prices of essential commodities including oil, wheat, and copper have plummeted recently. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prices for food and oil increased.

Prices dropped as a result of decreased international demand and slowing economies in China, the US, and Europe, where consumers are already battling with high prices.

Fewer businesses are reporting rising input costs, and the increase in wholesale prices is declining in many regions of the world, which is already having an impact on several inflation indicators.

European energy bills not going down

European families are unlikely to see their energy costs decline any time soon as winter approaches the continent. Rationing has recently been discussed in the eurozone, particularly in Germany.

This is due to the fact that gas prices in Europe, which for many years has relied heavily on imports from Russia, are still four times higher today than they were a year ago and very close to record highs. The Nord Stream pipeline’s ability to transport gas has been the subject of much uncertainty.

When the present price restriction expires in October, consumers everywhere—including the United Kingdom, which has its own gas but very little storage capacity—will experience an increase in their electricity rates.

The end of August will witness the expiration of a subsidy at the gas pump, which is bad news for German drivers as well.

With the current ongoing economic situation, it is quite evident that every individual will be worried about the potential recession. However, the best time is to start preparing for this now, so that people will be able to handle the situation well if a recession does hit.

A business Ph.D. and fintech entrepreneur who currently runs a multimillion-dollar company states that a recession can provide people with opportunities that in turn will help them get their finances in order.

Here are 18 recession money rules which will come in handy in order to prepare oneself for a recession:

Experts often advise that one should build a 12-24 month emergency fund

One should make sure to reduce high-interest debt from the credit card which has been issued

When interest rates are high, creditors will carefully review your credit report, making it more challenging, if not more
expensive, to get authorized for loans; so come up with a strategy to raise your credit score

Make sure to keep your credit accounts active

If your mortgage is close to term, then make sure you start negotiating prior to the deadline

Stay put if you have low-interest mortgage debt

Try to purchase the items in bulk if possible, this will help in saving money later when inflation hits

Consider purchasing frozen food items, this will allow food to be kept for a longer duration and will save money in the longer
run

When purchasing, try to opt for generic brands and avoid spending money on fancy brands that sell their products at exorbitant
prices

When going out, plan it and avoid unnecessary multiple trips

Start your long-term investment after you’ve established your emergency money

Invest in sectors that can withstand a downturn

Search for inverse correlations, and diversify your portfolio by purchasing asset classes

Look for positions that are recession-proof if you are thinking about changing your profession

Develop extra revenue streams

Sell goods you no longer need to thrift shops

In a competitive employment market, improving your abilities or pursuing higher educated will increase your marketability

Lastly, don’t panic as recessions don’t last forever

The main aim behind this move is to prevent mass gatherings in Colombo in order to protest against the government

Amid the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Air India has said that it would soon reduce its India- Sri Lanka flights from 16 to 13 per week starting due to poor demand in the country. The decision will come into effect from April 9.

Sri Lanka is currently going through its worst crisis where there are long lines for fuel, cooking gas, and essentials are in short supply followed by long hours of power cuts for the past several weeks.

Air India spokesperson said, “Currently Air India is operating 16 flights a week — daily flights from Delhi, which will reduce from seven to four per week, and nine flights a week from Chennai which will remain unchanged.”

The schedule will be as follows:

AI 283 on the Delhi-Colombo sector will operate on Monday, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays, starting from April 9 till May 31.

AI 284 on the Colombo-Delhi sector will be flying on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from April 9 to May 31.

Amid the ongoing violent protests, the Sri Lankan government has blocked several social media websites such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The government even introduced a 36-hour curfew ahead of its planned anti-government rally.

The objective behind this move is to prevent mass gatherings in Colombo in order to protest against the government and its failure towards not fulfilling its promise.

The central bank of Sri Lanka is seeking an extension of its credit line by another $1.5 billion from neighbour India to deal with its worst economic crisis. India had already given the emerald island $1 billion in loans since the crisis surfaced after SL Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa visited New Delhi.

The funds are essential for importing essential supplies like food, medicine, and petroleum products as the country is facing a peak shortage of foreign currency which in turn has led to the devaluation of the Sri Lankan rupee.

Food prices are higher than ever before and the country is counting on a bailout from the International Monetary Funding to get back to its feet.

The situation is so bad that the country has been forced to ration its food and fuel supplies, exams have been cancelled due to a shortage of ink and paper. The country’s national petroleum corporation has said that there is no diesel for public distribution for at least two days, according to an AFP report.

Faced with the double trouble of shortage of power from hydroelectric stations, the country is facing 10-hour long power cuts to deal with the oil shortage which fuels the country’s conventional power generation facilities.

The medical care setup has also been deeply impacted by routine and non-emergency surgeries put on hold indefinitely.

The handout by India is significant in light of growing China’s influence in Sri Lankan affairs. Sri Lanka had sought financial help from China too including a debt restructuring arrangement. The crisis has been triggered by fiscal mismanagement in the form of high government spending and inadequate taxation. Two years of the COVID-19 pandemic also gave a death blow to the nation as tourism, one of the backbones of the country’s economy, could not function.
