Their arrival follows that of Ben Fox, who recently also joined Jones Day’s Banking, Finance & Securities Practice in Amsterdam, and Dr. Michael Fischer who recently joined the Practice in Frankfurt.

Giles Elliott, who co-leads the firm’s banking, finance & securities practice, stated: “Adding Lee and Ewen, along with Ben and Michael,to our global team sends a very strong message that Jones Day remains committed to providing our clients access to experienced, effective talent in Europe.”

“Cross-border deals, particularly in the leveraged finance area, are becoming significantly larger and even more complex. All four of these new partners have demonstrated the ability to structure, manage, and close significant transactions on behalf of a client pool that crosses borders and industries. They will be great additions to what is already a very strong global team and I welcome them to Jones Day.” He added.

Federman comes with extensive experience in cross-border syndicated financing transactions with a particular focus on leveraged finance and corporate lending. He has represented bank lenders, alternate credit providers, corporate borrowers and financial sponsors across the credit spectrum in several key financial jurisdictions—including London, New York, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Budapest – and covering a wide range of sectors that include healthcare, infrastructure, transport and telecommunications. He is recognized for his work in leveraged finance and syndicated lending by The Legal 500 – Europe, and is also a member of the Loan Market Association’s developing markets working party, and a regular speaker at LMA events across the globe.

Scott represents lenders –including credit and debt funds, borrowers and sponsors on a range of cross-border, bilateral and syndicated financings, refinancing and restructurings, on a national and international level, including in emerging markets. His portfolio of clients include major U.K. and international clearing banks, investment banks, credit and debt funds, and private equity clients, with a focus on leveraged finance. He has been heavily involved in the development and structuring of direct lending mechanisms in the leveraged middle market provided by funds including senior debt instruments, mezzanine financing, second lien and unitranche financing.

John Phillips, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s London office, said: “The addition of Lee and Ewen add great transactions depth and skill to our strong London team. Their broad experience across numerous financing arrangements is a valuable resource for our clients. I look forward to working with them and welcome them to Jones Day.”

Fox has had experience working with clients on a broad range of financing matters including secured and unsecured syndicated lending, real estate finance, asset finance, and leveraged transactions. He has extensive experience in domestic and cross-border transactions. He represents both lenders and borrowers, and has counseled major international and Dutch financial institutions, alternative capital providers, and other non-bank lenders.

Dr. Fischer previously spent seven years as General Counsel at UBS Europe SE in Frankfurt. Prior to this, he held leading roles with the German financial market stabilization authority as well as with international hedge funds and asset management companies. He started his career as an M&A attorney-at-law with international law firms.

Jones Day is a global law firm with more than 2,500 lawyers in 43 offices across five continents. Its nearly 300 lawyers in banking, finance & securities department have helped clients navigate the globally transformed regulatory environment and close thousands of transactions totaling more than $6 trn over the past five years.

MYPINPAD announces new campaign to explore how consumers feel about convenience versus security in online commerce

August 9, 2016: Recent news reports about increased levels of fraud across the likes of Amazon Prime, Uber, eBay and Vodafone have opened up a debate on whether the digital commerce industry has compromised consumer security in favour of user experience.

Are the rising fraud levels attributable to the ‘fragmented’ approach that the fintech industry takes in dealing with fraud? Have we reached a tipping point? Would consumers feel more positive about a brand that proactively seeks to protect them, adding multi-factor, transaction appropriate security for online transactions?

MYPINPAD, an enabler of multi-factor authentication for touchscreen devices such as mobile phones and tablets, will aim to answer these critical questions during a campaign set to investigate consumer attitudes towards security and asses the biggest threats to consumer trust.

David Poole, Business Development Director of MYPINPAD said, “Since the start of the digital commerce revolution, the onus has been on making the checkout, authentication and payment processes as swift and easy as possible. But how would consumers feel about their online transactions if there was a clear proactive element of security protection – even if it created some and perhaps small degree of friction? Have rising fraud rates and headline stories about scammed customers made the public rethink their payment security?”

In April this year, MYPINPAD released exclusive consumer research, which showed that 85% of consumers would value the opportunity to authenticate large financial transactions with their mobile. Now, using this research, the mobile authentication pioneers are delving deeper into consumer attitudes.

Looking at how the payments industry needs to respond to these demands, David Poole pointed towards the need for universal ID and verification methods to cultivate consumer trust. “‘Segmented’ is a good way to describe the payments industry but ‘fragmented’ might be even better. It is fantastic that we are working in an industry so innovative and forward looking. However, innovation can often lead to new security risks. Another way to pay or another method of ID&V can be another potential open door to fraudsters.”

The industry-wide acceptance and deployment of Chip&PIN in 2006 serves to demonstrate the positive impact such an initiative can achieve, reducing fraud in face-to-face transactions by 70%. We have the same opportunity again — to deliver familiar, strong multi-factor authentication via our mobiles.

“Instead of divergence, we should be concentrating more on convergence to achieve this unification. For example, the FIDO Alliance, of which MYPINPAD is an active member, is endeavouring to provide a single framework to standardise the on-line authentication process. We see a future when consumer trust is co-dependent on the action of the banks and the brands, but also a consumer’s own active ability to responsibly secure personal data. Our digital profiles are growing, our individual consumer ‘avatars’ are constantly active online making purchases, banking, and socialising. This is where consumer empowering ID&V technology becomes vital.”

Jon Birt and Jason Cooling join Zapper, both have over 25 years of experience

June 2, 2016: Zapper, a global data insights and mobile payment platform, appointed Jon Birt as its retail sales director. Birt has over 25 years of retail account management experience. He specialises in managing the convenience and symbol group sectors, which over the last few years also included a number of Tier 1 high-street retailers.

Having worked previously for BAT and more recently Payzone and InComm-Europe, Birt joins the Zapper team at what is undoubtedly a very pivotal juncture with both a product and subsequent service which will dramatically enhance the day-to-day operation within this rapidly developing retail sector.

Working alongside Birt will be Jason Cooling, who also has over 25 years retail experience, in both the UK and Ireland, and he joins the team as retail commercial director. Cooling previously worked closely with many famous household names such as; Amazon, Argos, Tesco and Sainsbury, and also has great experience in other sectors including, video gaming and tobacco. Colling will be looking to launch the Zapper solution into the retail sector and create many opportunities for this ubiquitous product.

Cooling comments, “I understand being a retailer requires an extraordinary amount of skill. You have many hats to wear and must know when to wear which in order to be successful. From serving customers and managing employees to stocking new inventory, the job as a retailer is never done and there is always room for improvement. Zapper offers the necessary tools, resources and support retailers need to transform businesses to the future mobile payment age.”
