Saudi Arabia’s healthcare and insurance industries are in the middle of their most transformative chapter in decades. The national push towards fulfilling the ambitious diversification strategy “Vision 2030” is reshaping how people receive care, how employers support employee health, and how technology integrates into every step. In this evolving landscape, the insurance broker’s role is being redefined. No longer just a middleman, today’s broker is also expected to be a strategic partner who understands regulation, manages complex benefits, leverages technology, and delivers a human experience.

The Kingdom’s insurance sector is poised for rapid expansion, with health coverage and regulatory reforms driving record growth across the market. The health insurance market is projected to nearly double by 2030, with premiums expected to rise from SAR 42 billion in 2024 to SAR 83 billion, according to the Saudi Insurance Sector Review 2024 from Bupa Arabia for Cooperative Insurance.

The surge is driven by diversification initiatives, regulatory reforms, digital transformation, and expanding healthcare infrastructure. Health insurance accounts for 55% of the market, and mandatory coverage is being extended to new groups, including domestic workers and gig economy employees, potentially adding SAR 9.4 billion in GWP (Gross Written Premiums). Tourism is also expected to boost premiums by SAR 4.5 billion as Saudi Arabia targets 150 million visitors annually by 2030.

The sector has tripled over the past decade, growing from SAR 21.3 billion in 2012. Post-pandemic, insurers adopted digital platforms such as the InsurTech Sandbox, Nafis platform, and the “Virtual Hospital,” helping the sector maintain growth at a 22% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The establishment of the Insurance Authority (IA) in the Kingdom has marked another chapter of fundamental development, aligning with “Vision 2030” and the “Financial Sector Development Programme.” This regulatory overhaul also aims to create a robust, stable, and dynamic insurance sector, fostering clearer regulations, enhanced supervision, and increased opportunities for innovation and expansion. Considering this context, Almamoon Insurance Broker has established itself as a market leader.

Since receiving its operating license in 2008, Almamoon Insurance Broker has established itself as one of the pioneering Saudi companies in the insurance sector, specialising in providing comprehensive solutions for businesses. Partnering with leading insurance providers, Almamoon offers various coverage options, including property, liability, and employee benefits insurance. With a focus on understanding the unique needs of each business, Almamoon ensures that companies receive customised, cost-effective insurance solutions to protect their assets and operations. Recently, the company was named “Most Innovative Health Insurance Broker – Saudi Arabia 2025” by International Finance, further cementing its transformation from a transactional service provider into a value-driven health partner.

In addition to winning the International Finance Award, Almamoon marked another significant milestone in 2024 by obtaining an electronic insurance brokerage license. The company also received Sharia Certification from Sharia Review House LLC, affirming its strict compliance with Islamic Sharia principles in all operations. Further underscoring its commitment to excellence, Almamoon earned both ISO 9001 and ISO 10002 certifications, reflecting its dedication to quality management and outstanding customer service.

In an exclusive interview with International Finance, Almamoon Insurance Broker CEO Mamdouh Tantawi said, “Heath Lambert was our joint venture partner operating in Saudi Arabia in 2001. After Almamoon’s management acquired its license in Saudi Arabia, we established our brokerage, Almamoon Broker, in 2005, further strengthening our commitment to delivering reliable insurance services tailored to the local market.”

Building trust before technology

Almamoon leadership understood one truth early: innovation without trust is fragile. In an industry where lives and livelihoods are at stake, credibility is the currency that buys permission to innovate. Based on that reality, Almamoon made the task of delivering excellence in insurance brokerage its main mission.

“To provide exceptional insurance brokerage services by combining our expertise, integrity, and dedication, we are committed to achieving the best outcomes for our clients, ensuring their financial well-being and peace of mind in every transaction. We aspire to be the most trusted partner for our clients, guiding them through the complexities of the insurance landscape with innovative solutions. Our goal is to build a legacy of trust and empowerment, ensuring our clients’ financial security and success for generations,” Mamdouh Tantawi noted.

Before building apps or integrating APIs, the company invested heavily in people, governance, and compliance. Every operational layer has now been aligned with national regulations and Sharia principles. Data is hosted securely within the Kingdom, and transparent audit trails ensure accountability for every action. The company’s ISO 9001 certification signals a commitment to quality management, while ISO 10002 reflects a structured approach to handling feedback and resolving customer concerns. This strong compliance foundation has safeguarded clients and empowered Almamoon to innovate without compromising ethics or legal standards.

“At Almamoon Broker, our mission is simple yet profound: to empower you to achieve your financial goals and aspirations. We understand that navigating the complexities of the financial markets can be daunting, which is why we are committed to providing our clients with the guidance, expertise, and support they need to make informed decisions and seize opportunities. Our success is measured not only by the returns on their investments, but also by the strength of the relationships we build. Client satisfaction and success are our top priorities, and we are dedicated to exceeding expectations at every turn,” the CEO added.

Almamoon provides tailored insurance and risk management strategies that meet the unique needs of its clients across various industries. With extensive local and international experience, the insurance broker combines global expertise with a deep understanding of Saudi market dynamics.

“Our experienced team provides proactive, consultative advice, leveraging deep market knowledge to deliver the best possible outcomes for each client’s business. The team manages every aspect of the client’s insurance needs—from placement to claims management—ensuring efficient, effective, and timely solutions. We prioritise each client’s unique requirements, offering personalised services that align with their business objectives and risk profile. Our strong relationships with top-rated insurance carriers enable the firm to secure competitive pricing and superior coverage for the clients,” Mamdouh Tantawi asserted.

Technology designed for humans

After securing its compliance foundation, Almamoon shifted its focus to technology, ensuring that every innovation served a defined purpose and resulted in a measurable outcome. Every digital solution has been built to solve real client challenges, not just to look impressive in a product brochure.
Almamoon’s proprietary digital platform now brings together services that once required multiple calls, emails, and paper forms. Real-time policy viewing, instant account statements, and an integrated ticketing system for service requests ensure seamless communication. Secure API integrations connect directly to leading insurers, reducing turnaround times and errors. Meanwhile, Microsoft Power BI dashboards transform raw claims data into visual insights, enabling HR and finance teams to make informed, data-driven decisions. In practice, an HR manager can log in, check every employee’s claim status, analyse cost trends, and even request policy adjustments, all within minutes, without the back-and-forth traditionally associated with brokers.

Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification has resulted in the most diverse workforce the Kingdom has ever seen. Employers range from multinational corporations and semi-government bodies to fast-growing SMEs and family-owned businesses. Almamoon recognised that a one-size-fits-all approach fails in such a varied environment. Instead, it developed the expertise to create customised health insurance solutions tailored to each segment.

“Large enterprises benefit from integrated wellness and chronic disease management programmes, SMEs get affordable plans with meaningful benefits, financial institutions receive compliance-driven coverage, and government or semi-government clients are offered fully Sharia-compliant policies. These solutions are not theoretical. They are built after careful analysis of workforce demographics, claims history, and utilisation patterns, ensuring that coverage is relevant, cost-effective, and sustainable,” he added.

Putting people at the centre

While many brokers focus on digital transformation, Almamoon emphasises human transformation, improving the way people experience insurance. Its multi-channel service model reflects modern communication habits: mobile apps for tech-savvy users, WhatsApp for quick interactions, and a dedicated health desk for those who prefer human contact. The company has also redesigned processes like outpatient reimbursements for speed and clarity. Policyholders now receive reimbursements faster, with fewer requests for extra documentation, making health insurance feel like a genuine benefit rather than a bureaucratic task.

Among its core services, Almamoon offers comprehensive insurance risk assessment and management, developing tailored mitigation strategies for its clients. In addition to consulting on cost management, savings, and negotiating better rates, the company has built a strong reputation for exceptional customer service and responsiveness. Through its insurance placement and coverage services, Almamoon helps clients secure suitable policies while customising coverage to meet their specific needs. Under its policy review and optimisation programme, clients receive regular policy evaluations along with expert recommendations for coverage adjustments.

Almamoon also provides the Saudi Arabian market with multiple policy options, making it easier to select the best coverage, even during renewal periods. Additional essential services include claims assistance and advocacy, specialised insurance solutions, and compliance and regulatory guidance.

A culture of rapid innovation

Almamoon’s working culture is built on short feedback loops and rapid prototyping. Ideas are tested in real-world conditions, refined based on results, and rolled out without delay, which is a stark contrast to the slower cycles that dominate the industry. Recent innovations by the venture include AI-powered chatbots that provide policy details on demand, interactive wellness programmes that encourage healthy living, and a smart renewal engine that anticipates client needs and simplifies annual updates. Innovation here isn’t a department; it’s a daily habit shared by claims specialists, software engineers, and many others.

Talking about Almamoon’s innovative insurance services, a special mention must be made of the cutting-edge “New Leasing Platform” developed by the venture to comply with IA (Saudi Insurance Authority) regulations and ensure seamless operations for banks and auto-leasing finance partners. In addition to ensuring regulatory compliance, the user-friendly platform is recognised for its fast processing speed, interactive dashboards, and seamless API integration.

Almamoon has established its strong presence across the insurance industry verticals. Be it marine (inland transit, marine cargo, marine hull and machinery insurance), motor (motor comprehensive insurance, motor third-party liability insurance, and motor trade insurance), industrial and energy (boilers and pressure vessel insurance), or aviation (aviation insurance and airport operations liability), Almamoon has its tailored products and services lined up for the industry players.

In the financial field, Almamoon’s solutions cover domains like indemnity, directors and officers’ liability, cybercrime, bankers’ blanket bond, trade credit insurance, and group creditor insurance. For working professionals, the company offers group personal accident insurance, group medical insurance, group life insurance, and a group savings plan.

Growth with a purpose

Almamoon established its main office in 2005, laying the foundation for its regional presence. In alignment with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, the company inaugurated its Riyadh office in 2019 under the patronage of His Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Almamoon strategically launched a second branch in Riyadh to support the expanding needs of Saudi enterprises, particularly within the emerging government and semi-government sectors, and to accommodate the influx of international companies entering the Kingdom.

Also, opening a new branch in Alkhobar strengthens Almamoon’s presence in the Eastern Province, bringing services closer to clients in one of the country’s most dynamic business hubs. Strategic partnerships with insurers enable Almamoon to offer bundled solutions that combine health coverage with auto and life insurance, streamlining procurement for corporate clients.

Since 2022, Almamoon’s approach has driven double-digit annual growth in Gross Written Premium (GWP). However, the company views growth as a means to an end. Its goal is to extend high-quality, client-focused service to more organisations and individuals across the Kingdom.

“Transformation at Almamoon isn’t just about headline-grabbing strategies. It’s about hundreds of micro-decisions made every week. A claims specialist finds a way to cut processing time in half. A developer refines a mobile app feature after observing user behaviour. A regional manager pilots a new onboarding system that later becomes company-wide policy. These small, consistent improvements accumulate into the large-scale changes that win industry recognition and client loyalty,” Mamdouh Tantawi added.

Another shining example of Almamoon’s innovation is the “Prestige Programme,” which takes care of the healthcare needs of the Saudi market. The programme covers chronic disease management, global assistance, maternity protocol programme, and home child vaccination.

What’s next for Almamoon?

The future of Almamoon is focused on deepening transparency, efficiency, and client empowerment. The next wave of innovation includes a self-service employer dashboard for total policy control, automated claims pre-authorisation to speed up approvals, and enhanced smart renewal tools to simplify policy management. These initiatives are designed to remove friction from the health insurance process, allowing clients to spend less time navigating benefits and more time focusing on their core business and employees’ well-being.

The strength of the Almamoon model lies in its balance. Regulatory discipline builds trust. Technological efficiency streamlines operations. Human-centred service creates long-term relationships. In a traditionally slow and opaque industry, Almamoon proves that brokerage can be fast, transparent, and super supportive.

By reshaping health insurance brokerage, Almamoon isn’t just adapting to change—it’s leading it. This mindset shows that in Saudi Arabia and beyond, the future of insurance brokerage will be built on trust, strengthened by technology, and guided by a focus on people.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding the boundaries of what’s possible across industries. From accelerating vaccine research to automating factory floors, AI innovations are driving seismic shifts in healthcare, education, manufacturing, and even warfare. Here are five key AI applications that are poised to shape the future, explained in a journalistic style for a business audience.

Vaccine Development And Medical Diagnosis

The rapid creation of COVID-19 vaccines proved AI’s value in biotechnology. Machine learning tools helped compress a 15-year development cycle into about 12 months by interpreting genomes and optimising trial data. Now, AI systems are set to make vaccine design nearly instantaneous.

According to Dr. Timothy Endy of CEPI, with a pandemic threat, researchers could design a new vaccine “within a matter of days.”

CEPI’s mission is to shorten vaccine rollout to 100 days, and AI-driven antigen design shows it’s within reach. By predicting viral mutations and crafting stable immunogens ahead of time, AI gives scientists a head start in the race against Disease X. The next outbreak might see effective vaccines formulated in days, not years, fundamentally transforming global health preparedness.

Artificial intelligence tools for medical imaging and decision support are becoming fixtures in hospitals worldwide. For example, in settings with few radiologists, Mumbai-based Qure.ai’s algorithms read X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds to catch diseases like TB or strokes. Qure’s software is now deployed in over 100 countries at thousands of clinics and has earned regulatory clearances for multiple critical conditions.

Similarly, California-based Viz.ai provides AI-driven stroke detection and care coordination, which has been installed in over 1,500 hospitals as of early 2024 and is growing. These systems flag urgent cases (like brain scans showing large-vessel blockages) and alert specialists within minutes, saving precious time in emergencies. Beyond imaging, AI is showing promise as a “clinical copilot” in primary care.

In a recent pilot in Kenya, clinicians used an AI assistant (co-developed by OpenAI and local provider Penda Health) during patient visits. The AI would analyse symptoms and the clinician’s notes in real-time, then double-check for errors or missed steps.

The outcome was a 16% reduction in diagnostic mistakes and a 13% drop in treatment errors. In thousands of patient visits, the AI quietly caught issues like a missed anaemia diagnosis or incorrect medication, prompting the doctor to correct course.

Importantly, doctors remained in control, and the AI served as a second set of eyes. With healthcare workforces stretched thin, such AI copilots could improve care quality, particularly in under-resourced regions. Global health experts predict that as validation studies continue, we’ll see wider adoption of medical AI tools, leading to earlier diagnoses, more consistent care, and lives saved.

Human–Machine Relationships

AI chatbots are becoming companions, blurring the line between tools and trusted friends. Platforms like Character.AI boast over 20 million monthly users, many of them young and female. These AI “friends” engage in conversations ranging from casual banter to pseudo-therapeutic sessions.

“For many people, it’s a fun diversion they get a lot out of,” notes Kate Devlin, a researcher of AI intimacy. She sees potential benefits in AI companionship, as long as users remember the AI isn’t truly sentient. However, there are concerns that vulnerable groups (e.g., children or those with mental health issues) might overshare with bots not designed to provide real counselling. As usage grows, society is adapting to these digital confidants.

Regulators and developers are debating safeguards, but overall, people seem resilient in navigating these relationships. As Devlin puts it, “We’re very good at being human,” and humans are learning where AI fits into our emotional lives.

Education

While schools grapple with students using AI tools like ChatGPT, educators are beginning to adopt AI for teaching as well. In the United States, major teacher unions partnered with tech companies on a five-year programme to train 400,000 K–12 teachers in AI use.

The initiative, backed by OpenAI, Microsoft, and others, aims to empower one in ten American teachers to integrate AI into lesson planning and personalised tutoring. Internationally, governments are also exploring AI’s role in education.

In India, OpenAI has agreed to provide ChatGPT access to hundreds of thousands of teachers and students, distributing 500,000 free licenses to public schools. Rose Luckin, a UCL professor specialising in AI education, notes that students’ rampant use of generative AI has disrupted traditional schooling but also opened opportunities.

She advocates teaching alongside AI and stresses the need for clear policies to protect privacy and academic integrity. The fundamental question, she says, is figuring out “what relationship do we want between human and artificial intelligence” in the classroom.

If done thoughtfully, artificial intelligence could augment teachers by automating administrative tasks and providing adaptive learning support, allowing teachers to focus on critical thinking and mentorship. The coming years will test how well education systems can harness AI’s benefits while mitigating its risks.

Automating Factories

Robots have long handled the heavy lifting in manufacturing, but now AI is giving them brains to match their brawn. A case in point is Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi recently unveiling a “dark factory” in Beijing that operates with almost no human labour.

This 81,000 m² smart facility uses AI-driven robotics and quality control systems to assemble up to 10 million smartphones per year, which is roughly one phone every few seconds. It runs 24/7 in the dark (since machines don’t need lights or coffee breaks) with only a handful of technicians monitoring the AI system.

Xiaomi’s custom AI manufacturing platform can even detect and fix problems on the line autonomously, optimising production without human intervention. Meanwhile, in Germany, Siemens is developing AI “industrial copilots” to assist factory engineers.

These AIs enable workers to control and programme industrial machines through natural language – telling a robot arm what task to do as simply as one might instruct a colleague. The copilot can also troubleshoot equipment by parsing error codes and suggesting fixes from maintenance manuals.

Siemens reports that early deployments of AI assistants have boosted efficiency by up to 30% in some processes (by reducing downtime and speeding up adjustments). “Much of AI’s future impact hinges on transforming the industrial world,” observes Siemens CTO Peter Koerte. Smarter automation could help factories cope with skilled labour shortages and increase productivity.

Dark factories and AI copilots might sound like sci-fi today, but they foreshadow a manufacturing sector where humans focus on design and oversight while AI-driven machines handle the repetitive assembly and diagnostics. It’s a shift that could reshape the economics of production across the globe.

Autonomous Military Drones

Warfare is entering the age of AI autonomy, as dramatically illustrated by Ukraine’s “Operation Spiderweb” in June 2025. In that covert strike, Ukrainian agents launched 117 drones from inside Russia, targeting strategic bomber bases spread across thousands of kilometres. When some drones lost contact due to Russian jamming, on-board AI reportedly took over navigation and guided them to their targets.

The result: a swarm of explosive-laden drones descended on multiple airfields, destroying 12 Russian long-range bombers on the ground and damaging many more. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, called it the most “vivid” example of AI on the battlefield to date.

Militaries worldwide are taking note. While current drones still often have a human operator in the loop for strike decisions, the trend is toward greater autonomy for survival, as drones can jam or evade defences and complete missions even if cut off from controllers.

This raises ethical and strategic dilemmas. For example, will AI-powered drones make preemptive choices? How can we prevent unintended escalation if machines make mistakes? International discussions about “killer robots” and AI arms control are intensifying.

Nonetheless, the Spiderweb operation demonstrated a key future capability with relatively cheap AI-guided drones that could cripple billions in enemy hardware, levelling the playing field for smaller forces. As artificial intelligence continues to advance, it’s clear that aerial autonomy will play a growing role in conflicts. For better or worse, the next war might be fought as much by algorithms as by soldiers.

After a decade, the world is finally beginning to pay attention. There is wearable technology, digital mattresses, sleep trackers, and sleep aids ranging from natural cures to CBD oil. While corporate sleep programmes are being implemented to help employees get a better night’s sleep, hotels are focusing on sleep tourism.

According to the consultancy firm Frost & Sullivan, the global sleep economy is estimated to be worth $585 billion this year. This figure highlights the significant size of the sleep industry, which addresses a fundamental societal issue while also creating numerous opportunities for investors and startups. However, how widespread is the “epidemic” of sleep issues, and are we taking sufficient measures to address them?

The World Health Organisation published research titled Sleep Problems: An Emerging Global Pandemic two years after the American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) deemed sleep problems a “public health epidemic” in 2014.

Global health emergency

We’re not getting enough sleep, according to experts who agree with the CDC’s analysis. The Chief Executive of the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), an American non-profit organisation established to enhance public health and well-being by educating the public on sleep concerns, John Lopos, states, “It is absolutely correct to say that inadequate sleep is a health crisis.”

Additionally, chronic sleep deprivation is associated with an increased risk of burnout, anxiety disorders, and depression.

“According to the organisation’s research, almost 60% of US individuals do not receive the necessary seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Our findings indicate that US adults and teenagers would receive a letter grade ranging from a D to an F for their practice of healthy sleep habits and sleep satisfaction,” he said.

It’s not only the US. A 2023 Nuffield Health poll revealed that the average sleep duration in the United Kingdom was just under six hours, with 11% of respondents only getting two to four hours per night.

Japanese Society of Sleep Research found that 71% of Japanese men regularly get less than seven hours of sleep per night, making Japan the country with the lowest average sleep hours out of all 33 countries surveyed by the OECD in 2021. This finding caused widespread concern among health officials.

Numerous studies have examined the negative health effects of sleep deprivation, and experts are worried. In the study Workplace Interventions to Promote Sleep Health and an Alert, Healthy Workforce, researchers found that “less than seven hours of sleep is associated with increased risks for cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, depression, and all-cause mortality.”

In the meantime, researchers from the UK and Italy discovered that people who slept fewer than six hours a night had a 12% higher risk of dying than those who slept six to eight hours.

Els Van der Helm, a sleep researcher and adjunct professor at the IE Business School, told World Finance that sleep is essential for brain cleansing.

“The brain accumulates waste products while we are awake; sleep helps remove these toxins, preventing cognitive decline linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease,” she explains.

According to her, “Long-term sleep loss is linked to a higher risk of depression, anxiety disorders, and burnout in addition to physical health risks. It’s crucial for immunity as well; even one sleep-deprived night impairs the body’s defences against infections.”

British neuroscientist Matthew Walker’s highly regarded book ‘Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams’, published in 2017, raised awareness of the negative health effects of sleep deprivation and sparked a conversation about “low-level exhaustion,” which has become the norm for many people.

“People don’t realise how their chronic lack of sleep has affected their ability to think clearly and their physical health, including the gradual development of poor health,” he wrote.

Sleep deprivation impacts corporate profits

Widespread sleep deprivation is also having an adverse effect on corporate profits. Van der Helm, who works with executives and organisations to solve sleep disorders, asserts that “business performance is measurable when sleep is lacking.”

“It hinders creativity and logical reasoning and has an impact on memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Employees who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to make bad decisions, make mistakes, and react slowly. Two nights of sleep deprivation can raise errors by 300%, according to research,” she said.

The body’s defences against diseases are weakened by just one night of inadequate sleep.

Employees who don’t get enough sleep are also more prone to become burned out, which raises hiring expenses and turnover rates. Poor sleep also increases the likelihood that workers may take sick days and need expensive medical care. Lack of sleep affects a leader’s ability to control their emotions, which raises stress levels and strains relationships at work, she claims.

More than 23% of respondents (almost 50 million individuals) to a CDC poll claimed that their inability to focus throughout the day was caused by their lack of sleep, and 8.6% (18 million people) said that their inability to get enough sleep was directly affecting their ability to perform their jobs.

Statistics show that this is having a negative economic impact. A study conducted by the research organisation Rand Health (Why Sleep Matters – The Economic Costs of Insufficient Sleep) calculated that the annual cost of insufficient sleep in five OECD countries could reach $680 billion due to absenteeism, poor performance, and mortality.

Japan came in second with an estimated yearly loss of $138 billion, while the US accounted for $411 billion of that. Research indicates that the UK suffers losses of up to £50 billion, or 1.86% of GDP, as a result of lower productivity, higher medical expenses, and mishaps and mistakes brought on by sleep deprivation.

It’s not limited to the economy as a whole, either. According to a study conducted by LSE professors, a one-hour increase in weekly sleep increased an individual’s earnings by 5% over time. Researchers said in the report Sleeping Our Way to Productivity that “these results are economically relevant.”

They say that an additional hour of sleep a week increases income by about half the amount of an extra year of formal schooling.

The sleep economy

The world is beginning to realise this, and employers and consumers alike are beginning to pay attention.

“About ten years ago, the public began to make progress on this. Regular consumers now understand the importance even better and are willing to spend on things that can help them get enough of the quality sleep they want and need,” Lopos said.

The foundation found that 93% of persons surveyed were open to using a “sleep-promoting environment” to enhance their quality of sleep.

This is manifesting itself in a number of ways, not the least of which is the quick ascent of sleep technology. Customers are taking full advantage of the products being marketed, including wearable technology, timed lights, weighted blankets, smart thermostats, and even smart mattresses that can identify sleeping conditions and modify temperature and firmness accordingly.

According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, over one-third of Americans have used a sleep-tracking device.

In addition to helping to mitigate the “epidemic” of sleep, that is opening up a whole new market for investors and business owners. Crunchbase reports that venture capital funding for sleep technology increased from just under $400 million in 2017 to about $800 million in 2021. Several sleep-focused venture capital firms have also begun to appear, such as San Francisco-based Supermoon Capital, which debuted in 2021 with a $36 million fund for start-ups with a sleep focus.

“Everywhere we have a live experience, there are genuine opportunities for products and services to help with sleep health. That could be on our bodies, in our homes, or in our workplaces and social settings. The only restriction on the list is our entrepreneurial creativity, which makes it difficult to cap,” Lopos added.

Holidays centred around sleep

The market is also seeing the emergence of subsectors. The travel industry is promoting “sleep tourism” extensively as hotels, airlines, and other businesses meet the increasing demand from customers for a restful night’s sleep. According to a study by the research firm HTF Market Intelligence, the worldwide sleep tourism market alone might expand by $400 billion between 2023 and 2028.

Misty Belles, Vice President of Global Public Relations at Virtuoso, a top worldwide network of travel consultants, claimed that “high-net-worth travellers are now seeking treatments for issues like insomnia, cognitive decline, and disease prevention. These initiatives include customised in-room amenities, sleep-optimised retreats, bespoke spa treatments, and cutting-edge technologies, like smart lighting systems.”

Because of all of this, experts think that the “sleep economy” has a lot of room to grow. According to Lopos, the worldwide sleep economy is worth around $600 billion.

“But when we take into account the whole range of daytime and nighttime activities we understand can contribute to healthy sleep, I think that is potentially underestimated,” he noted.

The worldwide value begins to rise over the hundreds of billions of dollars and approaches the trillion-dollar range that McKinsey recently proposed for the wellness sector.

The secret weapon?

Although these new sources of income are encouraging for business owners and venture capital firms involved in the sleep industry, will digital devices, sleep aids, and sleep-enhancing settings be sufficient to address ingrained problems?

Van der Helm is one specialist who expresses skepticism, pointing out that not all of these goods have scientific support.

“By providing consumers with daily insights, wearables and smart products can help raise awareness around sleep,” she said.

However, a lot of items on the market make unsupported claims about enhancing sleep, and this is why I continue to be skeptical.

She asserts that as consumers gain knowledge, they will start to favour goods with strong scientific foundations.

“In order to validate their products and achieve tangible, quantifiable improvements in sleep quality, companies are increasingly required to collaborate with sleep scientists,” she added.

Naturally, it goes beyond the items’ effectiveness. We must look beyond sleep-boosting products and sleep-focused vacations, even though these can help increase awareness of the problem. One such remedy is corporate interventions.

Rand Health experts think that organisations have a part to play. In the Why Sleep Matters article, they stated that employers should acknowledge the value of sleep and their part in promoting it.

“They should combat workplace psychosocial risks, discourage prolonged use of electronic devices, and design and construct brighter workspaces,” the experts stated.

Some businesses have already taken action in acknowledgement of the financial impact that sleep may have; in 2014, Aetna, a private health insurance firm in the United States, even started providing financial incentives to employees who slept for at least seven hours every night, as measured by sleep trackers.

A few years later, Crazy, a Japanese wedding firm, adopted a similar strategy, giving points to staff members who worked at least six hours per night, as shown by sophisticated mattresses.

Meanwhile, specialised businesses like Circadian and the Sleep Works are providing corporate sleep programmes to assist staff in getting the sleep they require.

Employer interventions may have a place, even though monitoring workers’ sleep might seem excessive. According to the Workplace Interventions paper, educational sleep programmes produced “self-reported improvements in sleep-related outcomes, and may be associated with reduced absenteeism and better overall quality of life,” indicating a clear value for organisations that prioritise sleep.

There is still work to be done, though, as most companies do not prioritise sleep “despite compelling evidence of the negative impact,” the researchers said.

Altering the work culture

Work-related stress, long hours, and digital habits significantly impact sleep quality. A study by economists Jeff Biddle and Daniel Hamermesh found that every additional hour of work reduces sleep by 13 minutes.

A recent Sleep Charity poll reported that 75% of respondents struggled with sleep due to work-related stress. Research by Joan Costa-Font indicates that people sleep better during economic downturns and worse during recovery.

Flexible work models, like hybrid schedules, help but remain insufficient. The National Sleep Foundation found that during the pandemic, Americans slept more due to increased work flexibility.

However, experts argue that many businesses still equate long hours with productivity, harming employee well-being.

Governments have taken steps to improve work-life balance. In 2021, Japan encouraged four-day workweeks, while Belgium became the first European country to legalise them in 2022. Despite this, factors like late-night screen use and blue light exposure disrupt sleep. A study titled Broadband Internet, Digital Temptations, and Sleep found that video games, smartphones, and TV reduce sleep duration by delaying sleep onset.

Experts call for sleep to be recognised as a public health issue. The World Sleep Society’s 2022 report urged for sleep to be treated as essential to health, like nutrition and exercise. It found that an extra hour of sleep per week increased wages by 5%. The report recommends global awareness campaigns, standardised sleep data, and legislative action. Advocates argue that sleep deprivation is a societal issue requiring urgent intervention.

Stopping the epidemic

They may have a valid point. This is a significant issue that requires attention at the individual, business, and social levels, if the mountains of study are any indication. Making realistic adjustments to our daily routines and work schedules could be a good beginning step, even though completely changing the way we live our lives from the inside out may be a difficult task.

We may eventually reduce the need for digital beds, sleep trackers, and other devices if the proper actions are taken. In an ideal world, we might not require them at all (for our predecessors, light and darkness were sufficient).

We appear to do so for the time being, which is at least somewhat advantageous. This rush of new products is, at the very least, drawing attention to a problem that has long plagued society and serving as a physical wake-up call for everyone to prioritise their sleep.

Time will tell what the effects will be, but it’s obvious that businesses’ bottom lines aren’t the only ones who stand to lose from this “epidemic.” If we take the warning seriously and begin addressing the underlying causes, we may be able to start curbing what some scholars have called “the most prevalent risky behaviour in our society.”

In today’s episode of the “Start-up of the Week,” International Finance will talk about United States-based Zipline, which was founded in 2014 with the vision of creating the first logistics system that will serve all humans equally.

As of May 2024, the venture has transformed itself into a major name in the logistics sector by designing, manufacturing and operating the world’s largest instant logistics and delivery system that has emerged as the first choice among businesses, governments and consumers, especially in Africa.

Zipline operates on three continents, North America, Africa and Asia, along with seven countries, Rwanda, Ghana, the United States, Nigeria, Japan, Kenya and Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Knowing Things In Detail

Zipline has made over 540,000 deliveries to customers, with an astounding rate of one every 90 seconds. The start-up has flown 60 million autonomous commercial miles, apart from delivering almost five million products, including more than eight million vaccine doses.

Zipline, which originally started its operations in the form of delivering blood and medical products in Rwanda, has since expanded its presence to sectors like food, retail, agriculture, and animal health. Zipline has two platforms, one for long-range delivery and the other for precise home delivery.

Opting for Zipline’s services helps its customers save lives, reduce emissions, increase economic opportunity, and provide new logistics services at scale.

Talking about Zipline’s in-house technology and products, let’s meet Zips, drones that make product deliveries. The product has been tailored for conducting precise deliveries irrespective of the weather conditions.

Zips are of two types: Platform One and Platform Two. Platform One’s operating principle revolves around the venture’s specially designed parachute delivery mechanism, which ensures seamless delivery for consignments carrying delicate and perishable goods. The drones operate on a smart launch and recovery system that also prioritises efficiency and area coverage.

Talking about Platform Two, its operational mechanism involves a low-profile dock, where the drone lands, charges and lowers the delivery droid into the loading portal. The drone uses onboard perception to leave packages exactly where they are supposed to be delivered. They also use multiple sensing technologies, with the ability to monitor 360* airspace. These sensors reach over a mile away, be it day/night, irrespective of the weather conditions, thereby adapting to the delivery routes easily.

Another component of the engineering is “Fleet Deconfliction,” which, aided by the start-up’s fleet management software, autonomously coordinates the traffic of the Zip drones, thereby limiting congestion along the route. The same component also helps the drones to directly communicate with each other.

Zipline also created software, where its business partners access and manage their Zipline services from one dashboard. The start-up’s single and easy-to-use app also makes it easy for people to order whatever they need, and track those orders in real-time. The venture has developed its custom fulfilment apps, which are helping its business partners stay on top of every part of their operation, from shipping to inventory to customer care.

Changing The Logistics Game

Zipline’s drone fleet ensures that customers can track and receive their deliveries in just minutes, from store to door. The drones, travelling at the maximum speed of 70 mph, pick up deliveries within minutes, start their journey, identify a precise and safe delivery spot and conduct their landings. The entire procedure also ensures low operational costs (no surge-spike fees) and higher delivery numbers for the businesses.

While Zipline has partners like “Walmart” and “Michigun Medicine” opting for the start-up’s “Instant Delivery” services, the venture’s “Smart Fulfilment” has clients like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Pfizer and Gavi.

Talking about “Smart Fulfilment,” it’s basically an end-to-end, storage, packing and drone delivery service offered by the venture. Under it, Zipline has so far delivered over five million products, with its smart warehousing methods having the ability to store goods at variable temperatures.

Zipline stores products according to food, medical, and other safety standards, after orders are received at Zipline’s facility online or with a messaging app. While the venture’s specially trained staff pick out the items and pack them for delivery, the fulfilment experts do a final standard quality and safety check. Zipline’s storage technology is also compliant with regulations which govern food safety and medical-grade cold chain activities.

What are the advantages Zipline’s business partners are getting by availing the start-up’s storage and fulfilment services? Resource efficiency, decreased wastage and overstocking, increased product availability and cost savings. Also, the business partners can ensure expanded coverage for their product deliveries, exploring new clients and growth regions in the process. Zipline also uses digitised planning and forecasting methods, powered by data insights and these help further to keep the overall delivery and fulfilment costs low and competitive.

Changing The Industry Playbooks

As of May 2024, Zipline is delivering products related to a massive gamut of industries, be it public healthcare, hospitality, agriculture or e-commerce. And how is it helping those industries?

Let’s take the healthcare sector for example. Zipline is making healthcare more effective, accessible, and efficient for everyone, from providers and payers to patients and caregivers, through its fast product deliveries. Availing the start-up’s solutions helps a medical facility build a comprehensive healthcare system that can deliver prescriptions within minutes of a telehealth appointment. The medical staff can send chemotherapy cocktails straight to patient homes. They can also transport labs instantly for faster diagnoses and better care.

Apart from ensuring cheaper product deliveries (cheaper than ground logistics), avoiding product loss/spoilage with end-to-end cold chain and ensuring safe delivery with advanced chain-of-custody tools, the hospital can also expand access and build new care capabilities with Zipline’s instant drone delivery.

Zipline connects directly to the medical facility’s operations to make them faster and more efficient. The start-up’s simple API integrations sync with the hospital’s software to make tracking and managing orders easy.

A very good case study here has been Michigan Medicine, a leading academic medical centre, which needed a reliable, scalable way to quickly deliver prescriptions directly to patients and transport lab samples between facilities. Zipline stepped in with its instant logistics technology, which helped the facility to game up its distribution and delivery network. Michigan Medicine has doubled its prescriptions, providing better care for hundreds of thousands of patients in their area.

The Rwanda Success

Talking about Zipline’s game-changing contributions to public healthcare, a mention must be made of the differences made by them in the African country of Rwanda.

With Zipline’s smart fulfilment, deliveries are taking minutes, ensuring healthcare products are not being wasted sitting on a shelf, and people access reliable healthcare. Overall performance and transparency have been driven upwards across the whole ecosystem, from middle-mile logistics to last-mile delivery. Reliable nationwide logistics networks are there with cold-chain capabilities.

In Rwanda, the incidents of wastage of blood products have been reduced by 67%. Maternal deaths due to postpartum haemorrhage in Rwandan hospitals, served by Zipline, have shown a 51% reduction. There is a 42% less likely chance of patients missing vaccination opportunities, all thanks to Zipline.

Zipline’s fulfilment and delivery system ensures safe and efficient transport, less waste, and maximum product effectiveness, even for points of care without on-site refrigeration. The cold-chain warehouses are keeping orders at -20ºC for 12 hours or 2-6ºC for 48 hours, apart from eliminating complexity with simpler packaging requirements.

The venture is also helping Rwandan health workers and supply managers to track, manage, and order inventory easily, apart from accessing smart data to analyse and improve operations over time.

Rwanda was battling product shortages, excess wastage, and supply chain inefficiencies serving its health facilities. Reliance on regional warehouses and bulk ground delivery over difficult terrain meant that commodities could often be out of stock or several hours away.

Zipline turned things into instant and on-demand deliveries to health facilities and points of care across the country, starting with the blood products supply chain. From platelets and plasma to cancer medications, vaccines, and anti-venom, commodities are now centralised at Zipline’s warehouses and distributed as needed in under an hour.

In the era of hybrid work models, the significance of communal meals with colleagues has become more pronounced than ever. The longing for human connection makes eating alone in front of a laptop increasingly unpalatable. The impact of nutritious food on overall well-being is evident, as it fosters human interaction, nourishes the soul, enhances physical health, provides energy, and uplifts mood. Essentially, food acts as the fuel that enables us to thrive.

Sodexo UK and Ireland conducted a survey involving 3,000 working adults in the UK, revealing a direct correlation between food and employee satisfaction, health, and productivity. These findings offer valuable insights into how businesses in the modern world can cultivate a successful workforce. The key takeaways are outlined below.

Hybrid Challenges

The post-pandemic work environment has undergone significant changes, with many employees now spending only 2-3 days a week on-site.

However, the office atmosphere often lacks energy, leading to diminished motivation levels. Simultaneously, the cost of living crisis has driven up food expenses at home, impacting access to nutritious meals and consequently affecting employee well-being.

To thrive in this new working world, businesses must delve into the core drivers of employee engagement and productivity. Understanding what brings satisfaction and happiness to the workforce is crucial.

Food as a Performance Enhancer

Drawing from experiences in the hospitality industry, it is clear that workplaces revolve around people. Providing resources and spaces for employees to thrive not only boosts satisfaction rates but also plays a pivotal role in recruitment, retention, and performance. Quality catering services contribute significantly to a positive work environment, fostering engagement, idea-sharing, and boosted morale.

Maxwell Mckenzie, Director of Food and Operations at The Good Eating Company, emphasises the importance of offering access to high-quality, freshly prepared, balanced, and well-sourced meals to improve satisfaction levels and performance.

Elevating Employee Health Through Eating Expz

Mental and physical health issues are on the rise in the workforce. Sodexo’s research indicates that only a small minority reported ‘very good’ mental and physical health, while 1 in 5 rated it as ‘poor.’ The survey also highlights that 97% of employees believe taking a lunch break improves their workday, and 64% claim that a meal at work provides the energy to continue their day.

Prioritising access to nourishing food not only positively impacts physical health and energy levels but also reduces sick leave. Employers have a responsibility to cultivate a culture of good nutrition to help employees reach their full potential.

The Link Between Food and Employee Satisfaction

There is a clear relationship between satisfaction with food at work and mental and physical well-being. Dissatisfaction levels, as revealed in the survey, are alarming, with 28% feeling disengaged and wanting to quit, and 43% quietly dissatisfied. Serious mental and physical health concerns were noted among Gen Z respondents.

Employers must take action to address these dissatisfaction levels, considering not only wellness perks but also broader issues such as pay, financial resilience, and overall employee experience. Investing in good food for employees can significantly enhance overall workplace satisfaction, creating a positive and enjoyable environment.

Connecting Through Communal Meals

The survey found that 58% of respondents work in a hybrid pattern, and remote working is favoured for its time and cost-saving benefits.

However, more than two days of remote work seem to negatively impact employee engagement. Incentives to return to the office include socialising with colleagues, free or subsidised food, a comfortable working environment, and subsidised commutes.

The importance of food in motivating employees to work on-site should not be underestimated. A tempting food offering can entice employees back to the office, contributing to a happier and healthier work environment.

Food as the Way Forward

The survey underscores the powerful influence of food on the workforce. Nourishing employees with quality food experiences in inviting, social spaces contributes to their overall well-being and likelihood of thriving. As businesses seek ways to improve satisfaction, well-being, retention, and performance, it is time to recognise food as an essential ingredient in the recipe for success.

Given how quickly 5G networks have developed, 6G may seem like a far-off goal to some. However, the next generation of networking is already set to usher in a period of unprecedented creativity, connectivity, and game-changing opportunities.

The 6G technology has the potential to achieve previously unheard-of data speeds, extremely low latency, improved reliability, and ubiquitous connectivity. With these capabilities, it could open up a wide range of previously unthinkable applications. The introduction of 6G networks is anticipated to completely transform industries, economies, and society at large by enabling the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem and enabling the smooth integration of AI and immersive technologies.

As per a report published by the 5G Infrastructure Association, 6G technology is expected to introduce a near-instant and unrestricted complete wireless connectivity, which will significantly transform the way businesses function. And if forecasts come true, this game-changing technology might exist by the start of the following ten years.

Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said, “Future networks will be a fundamental component for the functioning of virtually all parts of life, society, and industries, fulfilling the communication needs of humans as well as intelligent machines. As accelerating automation and digitalisation continue to simplify people’s lives, the emerging cyber-physical continuum will continuously improve efficiency and ensure the sustainable use of resources.”

“The vision for 6G is built on the desire to create a seamless reality where the digital and physical worlds as we know them today have merged. This merged reality of the future will provide new ways of meeting and interacting with other people, new possibilities to work from anywhere and new ways to experience faraway places and cultures,” Ekholm added.

6G is ready to deliver the hype

Even though 5G networks have improved latency and speed, 6G is poised to take these advancements to unprecedented levels.

Donald Butts, InterDigital’s Senior Director of Technology Strategy, said, “While we have seen early adoption of 5G for practical virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications, 5G has not been able to deliver on the early hype due to myriad factors like costs, chip shortages, and politics. As a result, we’ve seen lacklustre adoption across both consumer and industry sectors despite there being a lot of work done in developing services and bringing them to market.”

Although 5G isn’t able to provide fully immersive experiences, Butts explains that 5G has set the stage for 6G to expand on and make these opportunities possible.

“While 5G provides data transfer rates that are far superior to previous generations, it still falls short of the conditions required to support immersive experiences. Extended reality (XR) and full immersive experiences require data transfer rates of 200Mbps to 5Gbps – far beyond what is currently possible with 5G. 6G, however, certainly holds promise in this regard, because it will utilise higher frequency bands and is said to provide speeds up to 100 times faster than 5G. This will be crucial to providing immersive experiences ‘on the go’, which may aid in its widespread adoption,” Butts added.

Going beyond communications

According to Victor Holmin, World Wide Technology’s Director of Portfolio and Consulting, 6G will mark a shift “beyond communications.”

“The network 6G will go beyond communications by creating a distributed neural network with the ability to integrate physical, biological and cyber systems. This will be done through establishing a bridge between cognitive computing, communications and sensing technologies. 6G will mark the beginning of a new era: the Internet of Behaviours and Intelligence of Everything,” Holmin explains.

The sensor network, increased connectivity speeds, and the latest wave of edge computing and AI-driven applications will open up a plethora of new intelligent industry use cases. If these predictions become a reality, the deployment of 6G has the potential to dramatically increase capabilities, across the full spectrum of global industries, including transforming the way that teams collaborate.

“Instead of spending hours on 2D Zoom or Teams meetings, we will meet in 3D digital spaces, where our avatars will have ‘real’ eye contact. We will be able to meet in groups and even express body language in real-time. If we need to hold a one-on-one meeting, we could simply switch all the participants out and find a quiet virtual space to connect. And if you want to visit a factory or try out a product, you could simply ‘fly’ or ‘teleport’ to a digital twin and experience it from there,” predicts technology blogger and influencer Bernard Marr.

Moreover, 6G will enable the virtual world more than in the past, according to Holmin.

“With 6G supporting virtual environments and haptic technology, the virtual world will be closer to the in-person experience than ever before. It could be possible to no longer need to spend time commuting to the office, as the office could virtually come to us in a matter of seconds through VR and AR applications. Virtual meetings would feel almost as real as in-person ones without us having to leave our homes,” Holmin noted.

Enabling the future of remote work

The introduction of 6G networks is expected to significantly alter remote work and how people and businesses interact and function. Employees working from remote will enter a new era of productivity, efficiency, and flexibility with access to advanced technologies, immersive collaboration, and improved connectivity. The distinction between physical and virtual workspaces will become less clear, allowing people and businesses to fully realise the benefits of remote work and transform the nature of work itself.

“The added capacity of 6G has the potential to give workers the ability to control and interact with industrial machinery in real-time from the safety of their home office. Haptic sensory suits, fuelled by the ease of quickly moving data across the network, could allow workers to maintain full control from the safety of a desk through a controller and headset while still communicating with colleagues,” Holmin comments.

The potential capabilities are so great that the so-called ‘Internet of Behavior’ would come to pass if we could develop brain-machine interface devices that allow for the real-time sharing of thoughts and sensations.

“With 6G, the network itself will no longer be a constraint but instead ensure that almost any use case can be easily deployed. With a network as flexible as 6G is set to be, service providers will need to be flexible themselves, working collaboratively across the telecoms ecosystem and with customers to deliver solutions,” Holmin said.

The cyber-physical continuum

The cyber-physical continuum, which connects the physical world of senses, actions, and experiences, and its programmable digital representation, will allow free movement between the two. This is made possible by 6G. In addition to the metaverse as it is commonly known, which is a virtual world where avatars interact in virtual reality and augmented reality, 6G’s cyber-physical continuum goes much farther, offering a much closer connection to reality.

The cyber-physical continuum will enable the seamless coexistence of digital and physical objects as merged reality, improving the real world by projecting digital objects onto digitally represented physical objects. In the future, networks will be essential to almost every aspect of life, society, and industry, serving both intelligent machines and humans’ communication needs. The growing cyber-physical continuum will continuously increase efficiency and guarantee the sustainable use of resources as people’s lives become more simplified by the rapid automatisation and digitalisation of society.

To send data and update the digital representation in real time, countless sensors will be embedded in the real world. Actuators in the physical world will perform tasks that have been programmed in the digital representation in the interim. The 6G network platform aims to bring intelligence, constant connectivity, and complete synchronisation to this new reality.

How a 6G rollout could change work pattern

A rollout of 6G will enhance the way we connect online. Rather than devoting numerous hours to 2D Zoom or Teams meetings, we will convene in 3D virtual environments where our avatars will establish ‘authentic’ eye contact. We will have the capability to convene in clusters and convey nonverbal cues instantaneously. If a one-on-one meeting is required, we could easily swap out everyone and locate a peaceful virtual area to meet. Furthermore, you could ‘fly’ or ‘teleport’ to a digital twin and experience a product or factory directly from there.

Also, businesses will be able to offer engrossing VR and AR training experiences with 6G technology, which will expedite knowledge transfer between teams and improve retention. The aerospace and engineering giant Honeywell is already enhancing its training initiatives with AR and VR. New hires are given mixed reality headsets by the company, which allow them to ‘see’ the work that other employees are performing. The VR and AR technology overlays information to help the new hires learn as they imitate the tasks.

With the 6G rollout, people can experience the new social media world. We will use mixed reality glasses to view people’s 3D worlds—rendering them in real-time and customising them just for us—instead of accessing their 2D profiles on smartphones. For instance, we might go to someone’s virtual house and enjoy their artwork and vacation memories rendered in three dimensions. Alternatively, we could arrange a virtual planet get-together for a fireside conversation with our new and old social media friends.

The medical field will undergo a revolution thanks to 6G technology. We’ll have smart sensors floating through our bloodstream, measuring and monitoring every facet of our health with lightning-fast data speeds. These networked devices will gather data continuously, analyse it, and provide recommendations and health issue predictions ahead of time.

Additionally, smart devices that can provide medical attention and physical support will be available to us. These devices will be backed by online digital avatars that are updated regularly. Our healthcare sector will transition from a reactive to a personalised and predictive model with the help of these new developments. This will significantly affect everyone who works in the healthcare industry today and completely change the way we take care of our health in the future.

With 6G connectivity, we will have real-time, 4D maps that can help us manage the extreme traffic of our future cities, including autonomous vehicles on the ground (and even in the air). Highly precise sensors in cars and base stations that can navigate and provide you with the fastest, most comfortable commute will make your commute better.

“When executed at the front end of a project, this expertise enhances performance throughout all project execution phases. Skilled planning and execution supports the efficient use of just-in-time inventory and can hasten the project schedule,” the venture noted.

AlBawani practises advanced construction approaches on its projects, apart from acquiring labour through carefully selected subcontractors with a verified history of safety performance, execution excellence and commercial success. The focus remains on constructability, performance engineering, welding, and software systems.

AlBawani also preserves a database of craft personnel with both local and global project experience. From this pool, craft personnel get assigned to the construction projects based on experience and availability. The company also supports the needs of construction projects for entry-level through the upgradation of craft and supervisory training and skill certification, while using the materials developed specifically for the construction industry.

Also, the venture maintains a deep assurance of the field employees’ health and safety, apart from safeguarding the environment. Its quality programme is ISO 9001:2008 certified. The programme applies to both self-perform and project administration construction work. A quality manager is assigned to each project and is accountable for the execution and coordination of the quality programme.

In addition to construction services, AlBawani implements a complete Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) programme on every project it executes. Safety, be it that of the project or the field teams associated with it, occupies a significant chunk in AlBawani’s business practises, as it believes that “positive execution of complex projects can be achieved only with a healthy and safe workforce of employees, subcontractors and client personnel.”

“AlBawani’s engineering, procurement and construction projects are construction-focused. We confirm a smooth transition from process development and optimisation-driven execution defined by the study phases, to a construction and start-up-driven execution platform defined by engineering, procurement and construction phase,” the group remarked further.

“AlBawani thinks first and foremost about fulfilling project construction. Then we work backward, framing how to get materials to the various sites. After this, AlBawani determines how and where to drive engineering,” it added further.

AlBawani tailors its solutions as per the Clients’ requirements, while bringing ideas from engineering disciplines like civil, electrical, mechanical, piping and structural into the play, apart from onboarding advanced specialities such as simulation, enterprise integration and integrated automation processes.

The venture also collaborates with its client counterparts to develop integrated construction and project management solutions. From the earliest stages of project design, AlBawani involves the construction and commissioning teams to provide capital and schedule efficiencies.

“Our clients rely on AlBawani for accurate and timely design reviews. We conduct design reviews at key project stages to ensure consistent, efficient focus on the clients’ deliverables throughout the design process,” it added further.

AlBawani’s BMF Reviews (Buildability, Maintainability and Functionability Reviews) earned its fame for highlighting, addressing and resolving issues early in the design process for an efficient design and construction process, apart from minimising overall project cost.

Keeping the need to meet clients’ objectives for throughput capacity and quality of output as the primary project design goal, AlBawani, during the detailed engineering and design phase, develops plans to ensure that the designs reflect client requirements and facilitate the construction of facilities meeting the client’s strategic objectives.

Each project’s function, scope, cost and schedule get conceptually aligned with client objectives to optimise project success, while ensuring the improvement in the client’s return on investment.

During the design phase, AlBawani gets proactive, in terms of providing effective building solutions, and identifying challenges to mitigate design changes after construction commencement. This involves detailed pre-construction planning, which allows the client and AlBawani project team to form a clear roadmap for the bidding process, construction phase, and completion deadlines.

Diversification is the game here

Be it building a network of schools under the Kingdom’s ‘National Schools Programme’, completing terminal-related works under Riyadh Airports Company Private Aviation or implementing the ‘Red Sea Tourism Project’, you name any sector, AlBawani is there to turn the dream into a reality.

AlBawani has been bringing tailored engineering solutions to as many as 14 non-oil industrial verticals within the Kingdom. AlBawani is now expanding its network of affiliated companies in other fields like information technology and communication systems, trading, media and publishing, electro-mechanical, steel and metal fabrication, industrial and investments.

From water and power utilities, automation, avionics, defence technologies, specialised manufacturing services (like in-house precast, casework, ducting, steel fabrication, aluminium and woodworks factories), facility management or managing a diverse portfolio of highly profitable investments, AlBawani has been aggressively diversifying its company portfolio, while leading the Saudi’s diversification efforts with full vigour.

AlBawani has made a significant investment in new equipment, and the company now has over one thousand heavy assets in its fleet including heavy machinery, cranes, trailers, light vehicles, and power tools. Also, it is now expanding its operations in countries like China, Turkey and the UAE.

AlBawani’s growth plans

As part of its growth plans, the AlBawani group has adopted a wise expansion strategy covering energy and mining, apart from increasing investment in assets which will be offered through state funds, and governmental and private projects.

AlBawani’s board of directors is also considering selling a stake in the company through an initial public offering (IPO) in the coming years.

“Driven by a steadfast commitment to fostering sustainable growth, AlBawani Holding Group is actively considering an initial public offering (IPO) to make a portion of its shares available for public subscription in the near future. We are open to any strategic initiative that can further enhance the group’s value and propel its growth trajectory. As a leading national enterprise, AlBawani Holding Group is determined to play a pivotal role across diverse sectors and establish itself as a formidable competitor for global players,” AlBawani Holding CEO Eng. Fakher AlShawaf elaborated.

“Since its inception, AlBawani Holding Group has navigated a course through significant challenges, and has emerged as a firmly established entity – a testament to its unwavering determination, unflinching dedication, and tireless efforts. Moreover, the steadfast support of the Saudi government has been instrumental in empowering national companies to assume pivotal roles, thanks to the launch of numerous infrastructure projects and legislative reforms,” he added.

Eng. Fakher AlShawaf emphasised the transformative impact of Saudi Vision 2030 in propelling the kingdom to a prominent global position. He underscored AlBawani Holding

Group’s commitment to aligning its strategies with the successive short- and long-term growth plans outlined in the vision.

“This proactive approach has enabled the group to successfully execute a multitude of large-scale projects across the kingdom,” he stated further.

A partnership with the Saudi government-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) also represents a unique opportunity for the AlBawani group to leverage the Fund’s vast expertise and the opportunities it presents, thereby elevating itself as a pioneering diversified conglomerate within the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region and beyond, while consistently delivering exceptional services and value to its clients, employees, and the society at large.

Eng. AlShawaf also noted the PIF’s crucial role in the Kingdom’s construction sector, considering its paramount importance to the country’s economy. He also added that the Fund’s investments would play a pivotal role in the realisation of ‘Vision 2030’ and its ambitious projects.

He sees the construction sector’s significant role in the evolving dynamics of the Saudi economy.

As the Kingdom has the goal of becoming one of the global economic powerhouses by 2030, its construction sector is facing the challenge of executing diverse projects on a sheer scale never seen before. The answer lies in engaging companies possessing the necessary expertise, planning skills, preparedness, and effective leadership to navigate the complexities and deliver exceptional results. AlBawani perfectly sits in the bracket, as its construction division AlBawani Construction Company (ABCC) is consistently demonstrating its ability to complete large-scale projects in a cost-efficient manner, while meeting the highest quality standards.

Among the ongoing key development projects in the Kingdom, a majority of them are centred around real estate, Eng. AlShawaf said.

These include initiatives led by the Ministry of Housing and its affiliated companies, as well as flagship programmes like Neom, The Red Sea Project, and Qiddiya.

The Kingdom is poised to attract a plethora of construction and investment projects. Talking about a project as diverse as Neom, AlBawani has successfully executed the assignment given to it by the Saudi government.

These large-scale initiatives span various domains and position the kingdom as an attractive destination, Eng. AlShawaf elaborated, while stating that AlBawani, through its various company divisions, is getting involved in these projects.

In the investment sector, the venture is currently holding significant assets in partnership with the government. Eng. AlShawaf also talked about AlBawani’s successful operation of the Jubail III water treatment plant in collaboration with other Saudi investors.

“Furthermore, we have embarked on the first educational infrastructure project in conjunction with the Ministry of Finance, the National Centre for Privatisation (NCP), and Tatweer Buildings Company (TBC). The first phase of this project has already been completed in Jeddah, with assets affiliated with the educational buildings in Makkah set to be delivered by the year-end. We intend to enter into several long-term ownership agreements, extending up to 22 years, with various agencies, and in coordination and collaboration with various AlBawani group companies,” the official added further.

Talking about AlBawani’s involvement in health sector projects, Eng. AlShawaf noted that the privatisation of the sector will attract substantial investments. His venture, apart from completing projects in this realm, has emerged as one of the leading specialised companies in this field.

AlBawani, as of November 2023, has a big-ticket project in hand in the form of establishing American electric vehicle maker Lucid’s factory in the Kingdom, which is also one of the largest EV production facilities outside of the United States. AlBawani completed the construction of the first phase of the factory in a record time (in less than two years), as the facility was inaugurated on September 27, 2023.

The company began construction of the Lucid factory’s first phase in May 2022. The future phases will consist of many buildings across the EV venture’s 1.3-million-sq-m campus plot at the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC).

AlBawani has also established the National Construction Academy (NCA), a non-profit national training institute. The facility has already commenced the training of 500 students, which will be increased to 1,000 in the upcoming session.

AlBawani, in collaboration with another technical institute, will expand the scope of training and introduce new specialisations that can cater to the needs of the 21st century construction and contracting industry.

“The service can be enjoyed at the customer’s fingertip through a phone or video call. An additional and free service of the same nature is BLA Health Partner offered by the company’s very own medical centre to every one of its customers,” stated Bangkok Life Assurance.

“For customers who need extra care after a hospital stay, Bangkok Life Assurance also offers services such as a driving home service, a practical nursing service and a physiotherapy service to ensure a smooth transition from the hospital to the patient’s home. The company also provides an Elderly Center and Home Health Care Information Service for those who require rehabilitation after hospital discharge,” it noted.

The company aims to ensure a seamless and positive customer journey, while also streamlining the claim reimbursement process for families of patients, making it hassle-free, fast, and efficient.

In line with this commitment, the company has introduced recognition awards, such as the ‘BLA Smart Hospital Awards,’ to acknowledge outstanding healthcare services provided by its network hospitals. These awards cover categories like best health check-up services, best customer services, and best agent services.

Additionally, the ‘BLA Best Caring Awards’ honour the insurance agents and staff who are the driving force behind Bangkok Life Assurance’s success. Their dedication and excellent service are recognized through these awards, highlighting the company’s focus on delivering caring and attentive experiences to its customers.

These awards reflect the company’s dedication to quality services, not only within its own operations but also within its collaborative partner ecosystem. Bangkok Life Assurance strives to make the concept of “caring” tangible in every action it takes.

Rather than resting on its laurels, Bangkok Life Assurance Public Limited remains committed to its ongoing efforts.

“Stepping into a sustainable future not only of itself, but also of Thailand, Bangkok Life Assurance will continue to offer the best insurance products and services to contribute to the sustainable health and wealth of Thai citizens,” BLA concluded.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made a significant impact on the healthcare industry, reshaping the way we diagnose, treat, and monitor patients. By enabling more individualised therapies and delivering more precise diagnoses, this technology is significantly enhancing healthcare research and outcomes. The ability of AI in healthcare to quickly analyse enormous amounts of clinical documentation aids in the identification of illness signs and trends that would otherwise go unnoticed by medical professionals. Healthcare and artificial intelligence have a wide range of possible uses, from analysing radiological images for early detection of disease to forecasting outcomes from electronic health information. Healthcare systems can become smarter, quicker, and more effective in providing treatment to millions of people worldwide by incorporating artificial intelligence in hospital and clinic settings.

The future of healthcare appears to be artificial intelligence, which will change how patients obtain high-quality treatment while reducing costs for providers and enhancing health outcomes. It all started with IBM’s Watson artificial intelligence system, which was created to provide precise and speedy answers to questions. Natural language processing, the technology used to comprehend and decipher human communication, was the subject of IBM’s unveiling of a healthcare-specific version of Watson in 2011. This event is mentioned in articles on artificial intelligence in healthcare. Along with IBM, other tech behemoths like Apple, Microsoft and Amazon are now spending more and more on AI-based healthcare technologies.

Artificial intelligence has amazing potential in the field of healthcare. AI in healthcare is anticipated to significantly alter how we analyse healthcare data, identify diseases, create remedies, and even completely prevent them. Artificial intelligence in healthcare enables medical personnel to make more accurate decisions based on more precise information, which saves time, lowers costs, and generally improves the management of medical data. From identifying new cancer treatments to improving patient experiences, AI in healthcare promises to be a game changer – leading the way towards a future where patients receive quality care and treatment faster and more accurately than ever before.

Here are a few of the different types of artificial intelligence and healthcare industry benefits that can be derived from their use.

Machine Learning
One of the most prevalent applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare is machine learning. There are numerous variations of this broad technique, which is at the foundation of various approaches to AI and healthcare technology. By enabling the application of artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis and treatment, machine learning has changed the way the healthcare system operates. With higher precision than ever before, machine learning algorithms can quickly analyse massive quantities of clinical paperwork, spot trends, and make predictions about medical outcomes.

The data science behind machine learning is assisting healthcare practitioners in improving their treatments and lowering costs by analysing patient records and medical imaging in addition to developing new remedies. Doctors can more correctly identify illnesses and tailor therapies to the needs of specific patients by utilising AI technology like machine learning for activities like disease diagnostics or medication research and development. Additionally, the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, such as machine learning, enables professionals to find previously unknown correlations between diseases in healthcare data or identify small changes in vital signs that could point to a potential issue.

The most widespread utilization of traditional machine learning is precision medicine. It is a significant advancement for the data science of many healthcare organisations to be able to anticipate which treatment procedures would be successful for their patients based on characteristics and the treatment framework. The majority of AI technology in healthcare that uses machine learning and precision medicine applications requires medical images and clinical data for training, this process is known as supervised learning.

Deep learning-based artificial intelligence in healthcare also employs speech recognition via natural language processing. Deep learning models often include few features that have significance to human observers, making it difficult to evaluate the model’s output. Healthcare practitioners find it more and more important as deep learning technology develops to comprehend how it operates and how to use it efficiently in clinical situations.

Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing (NPL) is a type of artificial intelligence that enables computers to comprehend and utilise human language. This form of technology has reshaped many fields, including the healthcare industry. NLP is being used in the healthcare industry for a variety of health data applications, including enhancing patient care by increasing the accuracy of diagnoses, expediting clinical procedures, and offering more individualised services.

For example, in order to accurately identify illnesses, NLP can be used to extract relevant information from medical records. Additionally, based on previous health information, it can be used to determine the best treatments and medications for each patient or even forecast potential health hazards. Additionally, NLP gives therapists effective tools for organising enormous amounts of complex data, a task that would typically take much longer to complete manually.

Medical personnel can utilise artificial intelligence to more precisely diagnose ailments and give better-individualised therapies to their patients, thanks to natural language processing, which is proving to be a vital tool in the healthcare industry. This type of healthcare AI is rapidly turning into a necessity in the contemporary healthcare business and is probably going to get much more advanced and be employed in a wider range of applications.

Rule-based Expert Systems
Expert systems based on variations of ‘if-then’ rules were the prevalent technology for AI in healthcare in the 80s and later periods. Clinical decision assistance using artificial intelligence is still commonly used in the healthcare industry today. Currently, a lot of electronic health record systems (EHRs) include a set of regulations with their software options.

Expert systems often involve the development of a comprehensive set of rules in a particular knowledge area by engineers and human experts. They are simple to understand and follow, and they work well up to a point. But if the number of rules increases excessively, typically above several thousand, the rules may start to clash and disintegrate. Also, if the knowledge area changes in a significant way, changing the rules can be burdensome and laborious. Machine learning in healthcare is slowly replacing rule-based systems with approaches based on interpreting data using proprietary medical algorithms.

Diagnosis & Treatment Applications
Diagnosis and treatment have been part of artificial intelligence in healthcare for the past 50 years. Even early rule-based systems had the ability to effectively identify and treat disease, even though they were not totally accepted for clinical practice. They were not noticeably more accurate at diagnosing than humans, and the interaction with physician workflows and health record systems was not great.

However, whether rules-based or algorithmic, it can frequently be challenging to integrate clinical processes and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems with the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare for diagnostic and treatment plans. When compared to the accuracy of proposals, integration problems within healthcare organisations have been a bigger roadblock to the mainstream deployment of AI in healthcare.

The majority of AI and healthcare features offered by medical software suppliers for clinical trials, diagnosis, and treatment are stand-alone and focus on just one aspect of care. While still in the early stages, several EHR software providers are starting to include basic AI-powered healthcare analytics capabilities in their product offerings. Healthcare providers who use standalone EHR systems will either need to take on significant integration projects themselves or make use of third-party vendors who have AI capabilities and can integrate with their EHR in order to fully benefit from the use of AI in healthcare.

Administrative Applications
Artificial Intelligence in healthcare is changing many of the administrative aspects of medical care. The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare can free up time for clinicians and healthcare organisations to concentrate on patient care and revenue cycle management by automating tedious operations like data entry, claims processing, and appointment scheduling. Furthermore, by offering a quicker means to analyse medical imaging, claims processing, test findings, and health data, artificial intelligence has the potential to lessen human error. Medical personnel are now more in control of their workflow process because of artificial intelligence, which allows them to deliver higher-quality patient care while still operating within budgetary constraints.

The ability of AI in healthcare to analyze the medical history of a patient and deliver better and faster results is reshaping the way healthcare providers deliver care, making it possible for them to devote more time and resources to their patients. With artificial intelligence in healthcare leading the charge in improving patient care, medical professionals can be confident that they can focus on delivering quality care while also saving time and money with AI-powered administrative tasks.

Also, healthcare artificial intelligence offers a refined method for healthcare providers, it gives better and quicker patient care. By automating mundane administrative tasks, artificial intelligence can give medical practitioners more autonomy over their workflow process while also saving time and money by automating routine administrative activities.

Challenges for Artificial Intelligence in healthcare
As healthcare organizations increasingly invest in the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare for a range of tasks, the challenges facing this technology must be addressed, as there are many ethical and regulatory issues that may not apply elsewhere.

Healthcare organisations are investing more and more in the use of artificial intelligence, but there are many ethical and regulatory difficulties and challenges which must be addressed.

Some of the most significant issues are gaining physician acceptance and trust, assuring compliance with federal rules, training algorithms to recognize patterns in medical data, patient safety and accuracy, and data privacy and security. Data privacy is particularly crucial because AI systems gather a lot of sensitive personal health data that could be abused if not managed properly. Additionally, proper security measures must be put into place in order to protect sensitive patient data from being exploited for malicious purposes.

When applying AI in healthcare, accuracy and patient safety are also crucial aspects to consider. AI systems must be trained in order to identify patterns in medical data, comprehend the connections between various diagnoses and therapies, and make precise suggestions that are catered to each patient individually. Furthermore, integrating AI with current IT systems might make things more complicated for medical professionals because it necessitates a thorough understanding of how current technology operates to ensure smooth operation. Finally, for AI to be successfully adopted in healthcare, medical professionals’ approval and trust are essential. Doctors need to have faith that the AI system is giving them sound advice and won’t mislead them.
