Ternus, a 25-year-old Apple veteran and the company’s hardware chief, who will be taking over the top boss’ role, inherits a business with enormous financial strength, a global installed base of more than 2.5 billion active devices, and an annual revenue of more than USD 416 billion, but one that has struggled to match the AI innovation pace set by rivals such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

After completing his 15-year record-breaking tenure as CEO, during which he led Apple to unprecedented heights, Cook will assume the role of executive chairman, allowing him to remain engaged in policymaking.

The choice of Ternus is significant. Unlike Cook, who built his reputation on operations and supply-chain management, Ternus is an engineer and product executive. He joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became vice-president of hardware engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team in 2021.

He has overseen hardware developments across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods. His work on Apple silicon strengthened the Mac business by giving Apple greater control over processors and improving performance.

Apple’s effort to build “Apple Intelligence” has faced significant delays, especially regarding a more advanced version of Siri. As it strives to deliver AI capabilities across its devices, the company has sought outside technology, including partnerships with OpenAI and Google.

That strategy gives Apple access to powerful models but also raises questions about whether the company can develop enough proprietary AI technology to compete over the long term.

ALSO READ | Apple Upgrade turns your next iPhone into a monthly lease

The challenge is broader than Siri. AI is changing how consumers search, create content, use software, and interact with devices. Apple faces significant challenges as its competitive edge has historically relied on its control over hardware, software, and services.

And it is also struggling with supply chain snags, especially on the chip front. To deal with the industry-wide chip shortages, the tech giant has already lifted prices across its Mac and iPad ‌line-ups. It has also braced up for dampening sales figures in the current quarter.

Ternus must determine how AI should reshape the iPhone and wider Apple ecosystem without undermining the privacy and security principles that distinguish the company.

The timing is demanding. Apple is preparing for a major product cycle, with its September 9 launch event expected to showcase new iPhones and potentially its first foldable iPhone. It will be Ternus’s first major public product moment as CEO.

Analysts see high-end devices like the upcoming foldable iPhone eventually becoming the main driver of Apple’s higher selling prices and margin growth.

Investors will also be watching whether he can revive a perception that Apple has become more evolutionary than revolutionary. Cook leaves behind an extraordinary financial record.

Apple’s market capitalisation rose from about USD 350 billion when he became CEO to roughly USD 4 trillion, while services grew into a business generating more than USD 100 billion a year.

The company also launched successful new categories such as Apple Watch and AirPods and developed its own chip technology.

Yet Apple’s recent AI missteps have created a strategic vulnerability. The company is competing with smartphone rivals and technology companies spending tens of billions on AI infrastructure, models, and talent globally.

That could push Ternus toward a more hardware-led answer to the AI race. His engineering background may prove useful as Apple seeks to build devices in which AI is embedded rather than simply offered as a cloud service.

Future products such as foldable phones, smarter wearables, augmented-reality devices, and more powerful Macs could become important parts of that strategy.

There is also a management challenge. Ternus must preserve the operational discipline that made Cook’s Apple extraordinarily profitable while encouraging greater risk-taking and faster decision-making.

He will also have to manage relationships with suppliers, regulators, and governments at a time when Apple faces scrutiny over its App Store practices and remains dependent on a complex global manufacturing network.

For now, Ternus has the advantage of continuity. He knows Apple’s culture, products, and senior leadership from the inside and has worked under both Steve Jobs and Cook. Apple’s board has described him as the right leader to take the company into its next phase.

But continuity may not be enough. Scale, efficiency, and financial expansion defined the Cook era. The Ternus era will be judged increasingly by whether Apple can turn AI from a weakness into a new source of product leadership.

His first job, in other words, is not simply to make Apple smarter. It is to make sure the company does not fall behind while the definition of “smart” is being rewritten.

Trying to break Samsung’s monopoly
Currently, Samsung Electronics dominates the niche called the “foldable smartphone market,” with the segment touted to be the next mainstream despite its premium price tags.

Foldable phones are anticipated to be a promising opportunity for consumer electronics companies that have encountered challenges due to a significant shortage of memory and storage chips, leading to price increases and a decline in overall consumer demand.

As per the research firm IDC, there will be a 12.6% jump in foldable phone shipments in 2026, whereas conventional smartphones will see a record 16.7% export decline.

Analysts expect Apple to launch a foldable iPhone with a screen similar in size to an iPad mini. Earlier in 2026, Samsung unveiled a new passport-sized foldable phone as the South Korean tech giant seeks to consolidate its industry foothold.

Apple is expected to ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, IDC predicted.

In 2025, Apple unveiled a slimmer iPhone Air and loaded its iPhone 17 base models with several better features. The iPhone 17 line-up helped drive a strong upgrade cycle among consumers.

Apple has retired one of its most familiar ways of selling the iPhone. On July 28, the company launched Apple Upgrade in the United States, a hardware leasing programme that replaces the long-running “iPhone Upgrade Program” and stretches well beyond the phone itself. Instead of buying an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch outright, or paying it off in installments, customers can now lease the device for a fixed monthly fee, then hand it back, swap it for a newer model or buy it once the term ends.

The scheme is available on the Apple Store online, in the Apple Store app and at Apple Store locations across the US. The leasing itself is provided by Klarna, the buy now, pay later specialist, which runs a credit application with a soft credit check that does not affect the applicant’s credit score. There is no down payment and no upfront fee, a large part of the programme’s appeal.

Apple is pitching the change as a win for flexibility. The programme gives customers “a more flexible way to pay for the products they love”, in the words of Karen Rasmussen, Apple’s vice president of the Apple Store online, announcing the launch.

How the lease works

Customers choose a 12 or 24 month lease for an iPhone or Apple Watch, or a 24 or 36 month lease for an iPad or Mac. Anyone leasing an iPhone must connect it to AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at enrolment, although iPads, Macs and Watches can be leased without a carrier.

Trading in an existing Apple device at the start lowers the monthly payment, and Apple Card holders can earn Daily Cash on what they pay. One quirk worth noting is that a device ordered for store pickup must be collected within seven days or the lease is cancelled.

The crucial point is that the customer never owns the device during the term. Ownership sits with Klarna unless the customer chooses to buy the hardware when the lease expires. That is the fundamental difference from the old programme, which was structured as an instalment loan that always ended in ownership.

Three ways out at the end

When the term is up, there are three exits. Customers can upgrade to the latest generation of the device without an upgrade fee, purchase the device with a one-time payment covering the remaining balance, or simply return it and walk away.

Upgrading early is possible too, though it attracts a charge, and Apple’s own lease terms warn that customers “may incur substantial fees” for ending the agreement before the initial term runs out.

The economics of leasing an iPhone

Monthly payments start at USD 17.99 for an iPhone and rise to USD 31.99 for the priciest models on a 24-month term. Apple Watch and iPad leases begin at USD 11.99 a month, while Macs start at USD 24.99, with high-end MacBook Pro configurations reaching the high USD 30s to USD 50s.

Apple’s own worked example makes the maths clear. An iPhone 17 Pro with 256GB of storage retails at USD 1,099. On a 24-month lease, the typical payment is USD 31.99 a month, which adds up to USD 767.76 over the full term.

A customer who then wants to keep the phone pays a one-time residual of USD 31.24, bringing the total to exactly the USD 1,099 retail price. On a 12-month lease, the same phone costs USD 45.99 a month. All figures exclude taxes and trade-in credit.

ALSO READ | Ahead of iPhone 18 Pro launch, sensitive Apple data leaks onto dark web

The case for leasing is strongest when it is set against instalment plans. A standard 256GB iPhone 17 costs USD 33.29 a month to buy on a 24-month instalment plan, against USD 22.99 a month to lease over the same period.

That is a saving of more than USD 10 a month, or roughly USD 247 across two years. The trade-off is that after 24 months of instalments the phone is yours, while after 24 months of lease payments it is not.

What is not in the price

Unlike the old iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple Upgrade does not bundle AppleCare+. Extended warranty cover must be bought separately and is billed by Apple outside the lease.

That matters more than it might for a purchased phone, because a leased device has to go back in acceptable condition, and damage can trigger fees at return. Apple points out that AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss can help customers avoid those charges.

The programme also skips Apple’s entry-level hardware. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, Mac mini, iPad (A16) and Studio Display are all excluded, meaning the cheapest routes into the ecosystem still require an outright purchase or instalment plan. Why Apple wants you to lease
For Apple, the logic is straightforward. Leasing converts lumpy, unpredictable hardware sales into steady recurring revenue, keeps customers on a regular upgrade rhythm and binds them more tightly to the ecosystem.

Analysts have described it as the clearest signal yet that Apple is shifting towards a hardware-as-a-service model, selling ongoing access to devices rather than one-off products.

The timing is telling too. The launch follows price rises on some devices amid a memory chip shortage driven by the artificial intelligence boom, and iPhone prices are widely expected to climb further. A low monthly figure softens the sting of a rising sticker price.

Lease or buy

For users who upgrade every year or two anyway, Apple Upgrade is genuinely attractive. Payments are lower than instalments, nothing is owed upfront, and swapping to the newest model becomes routine.

For those who keep a phone for four or five years, the sums point the other way, since buying and holding remains the cheaper path and leaves an asset to trade in or resell.

Personal finance experts are more cautious. Thad Hwang, founder and chief executive of budget carrier Goji Mobile, told Yahoo Finance that buying outright remains the best move for anyone who can afford it, though he acknowledged that most people do not have a spare $1,000 sitting around and called Apple’s structure unusual for combining no money down, 0% financing and a lump-sum final payment.

Stoy Hall, a certified financial planner in Iowa, told the same outlet that the real risk is not any single payment but “what happens when that gets stacked on top of the car payment”, streaming services, buy now, pay later purchases and the other small monthly charges people barely notice.

Their caution is worth heeding, since fees for damage or cancellation and a separate AppleCare+ subscription can quietly erode the savings. As with any lease, the monthly figure is the headline, but the total cost of ownership is the story.

The chip shortage has resulted in the global smartphone shipments going down 11% in the Q2 2026, marking their weakest April–June performance since 2013

When Apple announced price hikes across its Mac and iPad lineup on 25th June, the response from markets was swift and brutal. Apple shares fell more than 6% that day, their worst single-session performance since the April 2025 stock market crash.

Even the world’s most valuable consumer electronics company, with supply chain relationships that rivals have spent decades envying, could no longer absorb a memory cost surge that is reshaping the global technology industry from the ground up.

The same day Apple moved, Microsoft confirmed it was raising the price of its Xbox gaming console by USD 100 to USD 150 depending on the model and discontinuing its highest-end 2TB configuration altogether.

In its statement, Microsoft said console storage and memory prices have more than doubled and that it expects prices to double again by fall 2027.

The message from both companies was the same. The consumer electronics industry has entered a new and disorienting era. Welcome to RAMageddon.

Another depressing news have emerged from the smartphone market. Global smartphone shipments fell 11% year-on-year in the Q2 2026, marking their weakest April–June performance since 2013. The reason? Again, the chip shortage, that has raised handset prices and curbed consumer demand worldwide.

The structural shift that nobody saw coming
The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and workloads is exerting significant pressure on the memory ecosystem. The shortage is driven, in part, by a reallocation of manufacturing capacity away from consumer electronics toward high-margin memory solutions to support AI.

Instead of expanding conventional DRAM and NAND used in smartphones, PCs, and other consumer electronics, major memory makers have shifted production toward memory used in AI data centers, such as high-bandwidth memory and high-capacity DDR5.

This is not a cyclical blip of the kind the semiconductor industry has weathered before. This is not just a cyclical shortage driven by a mismatch in supply and demand, but a potentially permanent, strategic reallocation of the world’s silicon wafer capacity.

For decades, the production of DRAM and NAND Flash for smartphones and PCs was the primary driver for production. Today, that dynamic has inverted.

The three companies that control more than 95% of global DRAM production, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, have pivoted their limited cleanroom space and capital expenditure toward higher-margin enterprise-grade components.

This is a zero-sum game. Every wafer allocated to an HBM stack for an AI server is a wafer denied to the LPDDR5X module of a mid-range smartphone or the SSD of a consumer laptop.

The consequences for supply are stark. Data centers are forecast to consume 70% of all memory chips produced worldwide in 2026, a dramatic shift from historical norms. As recently as 2022, data centers accounted for approximately 20% to 30% of global DRAM consumption.

The reversal has been swift. Goldman Sachs expects US data center capacity additions to climb from 6.4 gigawatts in 2024 to 13.6 gigawatts in 2026 and 36.3 gigawatts in 2027. Every one of those gigawatts is hungry for memory.

Prices that have no historical parallel
Prices of DRAM, used in virtually all modern tech gadgets, rose as much as 98% in the first quarter of 2026 and are set to jump by a further 58% to 63% in the current quarter, according to industry tracker TrendForce. In spot markets, the situation has been even more extreme. In some cases, spot prices have jumped nearly 700% in the past year.

The hyperscale cloud operators driving this demand have locked in their supply through long-term contracts, insulating themselves from the worst volatility at the expense of everyone else. Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are negotiating long-term DRAM agreements that effectively guarantee supply at premium but stable prices, leaving the consumer electronics supply chain to absorb the volatility.

Micron, for its part, recently disclosed it has locked in USD 22 billion in such long-term commitments. The company simultaneously indicated that it can meet only about two-thirds of medium-term memory requirements for some customers. SK Hynix had already announced by October 2025 that it had sold out its entire 2026 production capacity for HBM, DRAM, and NAND.

The supply partners left servicing the consumer market are adjusting their quoting practices accordingly. Memory quotes are now typically limited to one to 30 days, with pricing often finalised at shipment rather than at order. In some cases, pricing is not locked until the product leaves the factory.

One industry supply partner recently advised customers to plan for potential DRAM price increases of 10% to 20% per month through the end of 2026.

Industry under siege
HP revealed in its Q1 2026 earnings call that memory costs now account for 35% of PC build materials, up from 15% to 18% the previous quarter. For device makers with thinner margins and less purchasing muscle than Apple or Microsoft, the situation ranges from painful to existential.

The base model MacBook Air now retails in the United States for USD 1,299, up from USD 1,099, while the lowest-spec MacBook Pro rose from USD 1,699 to USD 1,999. The base price of the iPad Air increased from USD 599 to USD 749.

GoPro, the struggling maker of action cameras, warned this month that it might go out of business after memory costs shot up between 80% and 115% at the end of the first quarter. Shares of speaker maker Sonos are down 23% this year as memory prices pressure margins.

Nabila Popal, an analyst at IDC, described the current situation as an “absolute existential crisis” for smaller Android phone manufacturers and local device makers producing handsets below USD 100.

Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer, and ASUS have all warned clients of tougher conditions ahead, confirming price hikes and contract resets as an industry-wide response.

To cope with cost pressures, some handset makers are quietly reducing the amount of memory in certain models and reconsidering the economics of low-margin entry-level devices altogether.

The downstream ripple
The crisis extends well beyond the obvious consumer electronics categories. The automotive industry, where DRAM is widely used in advanced driver assistance and infotainment systems, as well as in the electronic architecture of vehicles, faces a growing risk of business disruptions in 2026.

Gaming console makers Sony and Nintendo have both warned that tighter component supply and higher input costs could influence product pricing and even delay future launches.

The price of NAND storage, the flash memory that stores photos, games, and files on everyday devices, is rising quickly as well.

Samsung and SK Hynix plan to cut NAND production in efforts to increase capacity for the manufacture of more profitable lines like DRAM, meaning non-volatile memory technology prices could face similar price hikes soon.

The market impact is already visible in device shipment projections. IDC estimates that the smartphone market would see its biggest-ever annual decline of nearly 14% this year, while the PC market will fall 11.3%.

Deutsche Bank analysts, in a recent note on the memory crisis, described the production of memory chips as “a zero-sum game” and concluded that memory chips have transitioned from a pure commodity to “a distinctly macroeconomic variable.”

When does it end?
The honest answer, drawing on the current consensus across analysts and manufacturers, is not soon. Micron expects the memory and storage shortage to last at least through 2027.

“Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron’s chair, president and CEO.

New fab construction is underway, including Micron’s multi-site expansion across Idaho, New York, and Virginia totalling well over USD 150 billion in investment. Meaningful incremental DRAM output from these efforts is not expected until 2027 or later, reinforcing the lack of near-term supply relief.

AI architectures that require less memory represent one possible source of relief on the demand side, though this has been less discussed than supply-side solutions.

Google’s March 2026 announcement of TurboQuant, a memory compression technology claiming significant reductions in LLM memory consumption, offered a brief moment of optimism, though manufacturers’ stock prices quickly stabilised after an initial dip.

For the consumer sitting in front of a new laptop price tag that reads USD 200 more than it did a year ago, the underlying cause is the same infrastructure gold rush that is reshaping every corner of the global economy.

The AI buildout that hyperscalers are racing to complete is not merely an industry story. Through the silicon it consumes, it has become everyone’s story.

Siri, Apple’s AI-powered virtual assistant and chatbot, will soon have a revamped interface, along with a new chatbot-style app and other major iOS 27 changes that the tech giant plans to announce at its June 8 Worldwide Developers Conference.

As per a report from Bloomberg, the new Siri will become the centrepiece of Apple’s next-generation iPhone, iPad and Mac software updates.

Analysts are terming the latest Siri launch to be a pivotal moment for Apple’s AI strategy, coinciding with the leadership change at the Silicon Valley giant, in which John Ternus, the current senior vice president of Apple’s hardware engineering, will take over the CEO’s role in September 2026.

“Apple first previewed some of the technology in 2024, only to suffer a series of delays that put it further behind competitors and hurt its reputation. The company has spent the past year rebuilding parts of the assistant while rethinking its broader approach to AI,” reported Bloomberg.

The Siri revamp, touted to be the biggest in the AI assistant’s nearly 15-year history, will be released to consumers as early as September. The event will also likely be Tim Cook’s final major product launch as the CEO before Ternus takes over the proceedings. The immediate test of the revamped Siri will come in the upcoming autumn, during which Apple will be launching its iPhone 18 Pro lineup, along with the company’s first foldable iPhone.

“The new Siri will include the delayed features announced in 2024, such as the ability to understand personal data and analyse on-screen content. But those capabilities are just one part of a broader wave of upgrades: a rebuilt model that uses Google Gemini technology, AI-powered web search and a completely redesigned interface. There’s also a dedicated Siri app designed to compete more directly with ChatGPT and other AI assistants,” Bloomberg reported further.

Apple has redesigned Siri for modern iPhone hardware, making it live inside the Dynamic Island (an interactive, shape-shifting pill-shaped area at the top of the iPhone screen that replaced the traditional notch) as an always-on agent that helps users get things done across the operating system and within apps. The system can draw on web data, personal information and what’s on a user’s screen to complete tasks.

Apple is also testing ways to open up iOS 27 to third-party AI agents installed through the App Store. The tech giant, which already has a partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, recently tested integrations for Siri and other AI features with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, with the goal of routing queries directly to outside AI services from the “Search or Ask” interface.

As per the reports, the revamped Siri will resemble Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT. While the home screen will include a history of previous conversations, to help users return to prior chats, the conversational interface will further offer a voice mode, text field, and attachment picker for uploading documents and photos for context and analysis.

“When users ask for information, Siri presents rich text cards and results for topics such as people, places and news headlines. Similar cards also appear for weather forecasts and sports scores, as well as results pulled from a user’s own data, including notes, text messages, emails, contacts, calendar appointments and reminders. Siri will be smarter, too. In the interface planned by Apple, you can ask it for times you are available for appointments before scheduling something and for overlapping events. You can also ask the assistant to write emails, notes or text messages using information from the web and device content. That could include asking for a note to be created about how to fix a car engine or an email including your calendar availability,” Bloomberg noted.

Apple will also be integrating Siri into the Camera app as a dedicated mode alongside existing options like photo and video. The feature would let users take photos and have them analysed by a third-party AI agent or put into a Google reverse image search. This will help users to get used to visual AI ahead of future products like smart glasses and camera-equipped AirPods.

Apple is also bringing more “Apple Intelligence” features to the Photos app, including new tools called Reframe and Extend. Reframe can change the perspective of a photo, while Extend will be using AI to generate additional portions of an image. However, rival platforms from Google and others have offered similar capabilities for years.

The tech giant is also testing natural language prompt-based editing of photos that will enable users to ask via voice or text for specific edits, like cropping or changing colours.

Apple’s latest iPadOS (26) has turned the tablet into something much like a laptop. After years as a “big iPhone,” the iPad offers resizable, movable app windows and other computer-like features. In fact, Wired declares that “with the release of iPadOS 26, Apple gives these tablets the ability to use conventional windowing—and iPads will never be the same.” These upgrades mean that tasks once deemed “only comfortable doing on a Mac” can now be done “almost identically on an iPad,” giving users “a real computer in your hands.”

Desktop-Style Productivity And Multitasking

These upgrades add up to real productivity gains. iPadOS 26 now handles multiple apps on-screen with flexible layouts. You can drag app windows freely, arrange them side by side or stacked, and switch apps easily—much like on a Mac. For example, if you start a video export in iMovie or Final Cut Pro on the iPad Pro, the job can now continue in the background while you check email or edit spreadsheets. Wired enthuses that after this update, “a lot of those tasks you only felt comfortable doing on a Mac are now accomplished almost identically on an iPad.”

The result is that the iPad can now rival a MacBook Air for many workflows. With Stage Manager on, you could have a calculator, email, spreadsheet, and browser all open together, resizing as needed. You can even connect an external display and drag windows between screens, just as you would with a laptop and monitor. In short, the iPad’s multitasking has caught up to basic laptop levels, making it a more credible tool for finance pros who juggle data, charts, and reports simultaneously.

Apps And Ecosystem Integration

Today’s iPad can run most of the “pro” apps a finance user needs. Microsoft’s Office suite is fully available on iPadOS, as are many popular business apps (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Dropbox). Adobe offers iPad versions of Photoshop and Illustrator (though with some feature differences). There are even finance-specific apps—for example, Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance, and TD Ameritrade all have iPad apps, and web-based trading platforms can run in Safari. Apple’s own apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) handle spreadsheets and presentations natively.

The iPad also benefits from tight integration in Apple’s ecosystem. Your data syncs automatically via iCloud between iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Features like Handoff and AirDrop let you start a document or email on one device and pick it up on another. With iPadOS 18, Apple is adding on-device intelligence features (like smart completion in Notes and advanced dictation) to both iPads and MacBooks, further blurring the line. As Apple puts it, the new iPad Air “brings Apple’s advanced graphics architecture… taking \[performance] to a new level” while supporting accessories like the Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard. In short, if you’re already using Apple devices, an iPad slots right in.

Portability And On-The-Go Use

One of the iPad’s strongest advantages is portability. The newest iPad Pro is the thinnest Apple device ever (only 5.1 mm on the 13-inch model) and extremely light. The 11-inch iPad Pro weighs under one pound, and even the 13-inch iPad is lighter than most laptops. With a cellular model (5G) available, you can be online anywhere. For road warriors and business travellers, that combination of high performance and light weight is attractive.

Moreover, the iPad’s form factor adds flexibility that MacBooks lack. Detach the keyboard, and you have a tablet for presentations or sketching on a diagram with a Pencil. Use the iPad on your lap or even in a tight aeroplane seat more comfortably than a clamshell laptop. iPadOS now even supports connecting to external displays: you can drag apps to a monitor at the office to create a multi-screen setup. In practice, many finance professionals could carry an iPad Air (11”) with a keyboard into a meeting, then detach it to show charts on the device itself or annotate reports by hand.

Potential Drawbacks

Of course, the iPad is not identical to a MacBook Air, and some limitations remain. Because iPadOS is still fundamentally a mobile operating system, there are quirks: it lacks a traditional desktop and can’t run macOS-only apps or terminal commands. File management is more abstract (no user-accessible “home” folder or command-line), and multitasking was, until recently, less flexible. Even the largest iPad has at most a 13-inch screen, which is smaller than a 15-inch MacBook. As one reviewer found, splitting a 13-inch iPad display in two can make text feel “too small to read comfortably.” And of course, you must buy the keyboard and pencil separately, whereas a MacBook includes its keyboard built in.

However, many of these pain points are now much less severe. iPadOS 26’s windowing and Stage Manager go a long way toward the desktop experience, and major file functionality has been improved with the new Files and Preview apps. For most financial and business software, either iPad versions exist or there are cloud/web alternatives. In practice, tech-savvy users often find that the iPad’s added mobility outweighs the remaining cons. For example, if you rely on a remote desktop app or cloud service for truly specialised software, the iPad can serve as a portable portal to your usual work environment. Many longtime Apple users point out that the seamless ecosystem integration and convenience of a touchscreen tablet often offset the iPad’s limitations.

The bottom line is that the modern iPad—especially the M3/M4-powered iPad Air and Pro—is now capable enough for many tasks traditionally done on a MacBook Air. It has the performance, the software features, and the accessories to handle productivity, creative, and even some pro workloads.

For finance professionals and entrepreneurs who value flexibility, battery life, and true portability, an iPad can be a strategic choice. With its lower entry price and rich ecosystem, the iPad may well “replace” a MacBook Air for users who prioritise mobility and integration above having every legacy feature of macOS. In short, for many tech-savvy consumers, choosing an iPad instead of a MacBook Air is no longer a radical compromise but a viable option.

For iPhones, iPads, and Macs, Apple has publicly exposed critical security flaws that could theoretically allow attackers to seize total control of these devices.

Apple stated that it was “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.”

Apple recently published two security assessments regarding the problem, but nobody outside of tech media paid them much attention.

Users of the iPhone 6S and subsequent models, the iPad models starting with the fifth generation and later, the iPad Pro models, and the iPad Air 2, as well as Mac computers running macOS Monterey, have been advised by security experts to upgrade the affected devices. Several iPod models are also impacted.

Apple’s report of the flaw, states that a hacker could gain “complete admin access to the device” and “run any code as if they were you, the user,” according to SocialProof Security CEO Rachel Tobac.

People “in the public spotlight,” such as activists or journalists, who could be the focus of sophisticated nation-state eavesdropping, should pay extra attention to updating their software, Rachel Tobac said.

The number of users who were impacted by the vulnerability was not specifically stated by Apple. It consistently referenced an unnamed researcher.

Commercial spyware organizations like Israel’s NSO Group are renowned for spotting and exploiting these weaknesses in malware that covertly infects targets’ smartphones, siphons their information, and continuously monitors the targets.

The US Commerce Department has placed NSO Group on a “blacklist.” Its spyware has reportedly been used against journalists, dissidents, and human rights campaigners in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Will Strafach, a security expert, claimed that he has not seen any technical examination of the vulnerabilities that Apple has just patched.

According to Will Strafach, the corporation had previously disclosed comparable critical problems and highlighted that it was aware of claims that these security weaknesses had been exploited about a dozen different times.

Apple is announcing a major update to GarageBand for iOS that provides even more creative options for making music on iPhone and iPad. The update introduces a new GarageBand Sound Library, where users can select and download a variety of free sound packs featuring new instruments and loops. Beat makers can tap into a new Beat Sequencer instrument inspired by classic drum machines — popular with artists who produce Hip-Hop and Electronic music. The app also features new Asian Touch Instruments and updates to Drummer, including six additional players.

With the GarageBand Sound Library users can now preview and download new Apple-designed sounds and instruments right within the app. These free, downloadable sound packs contain a variety of Touch Instruments, Apple loops, Live Loops templates, guitar and instrument presets and more. Users can access the Sound Library from multiple places within GarageBand and will receive alerts when new sound packs are available. Initial sound packs include Future Bass, Reggaeton, Beat Sequencer kits, guitar amp tones and more.

New sound packs will be released periodically by Apple. Beat making gets even more exciting with the new Beat Sequencer. Users can choose drum sounds from a collection of classic and modern electronic drum kits in a variety of genres.

The Beat Sequencer is inspired by the simple yet powerful workflow of classic drum machines, and users can quickly build and edit grooves using a step sequencer interface that provides individual control over multiple drum and percussion tracks. Users can choose from 12 Apple-designed drum kits, each with their own unique sound and 25 beat patterns.GarageBand users can also explore the sounds of Asia by accessing new Touch Instruments, including the traditional Japanese Koto and Taiko Drums, and Chinese Guzheng.

Realistic and expressive performances can be easily created using Multi-Touch gestures for plucking and bending strings or playing different parts of each drum.Three new drummers play percussion in Pop, Songwriter and Latin styles, each with their own signature percussion kit that includes instruments like bongos, cajon, woodblock and cowbell. The app also now includes three new acoustic kit drummers specializing in Rock and Alternative beats.

Apple is expected to launch its next flagship device iPhone 8 on September 12, a media report said.

iPhone launches are usually one of the biggest tech events in the world and this year it’s even bigger. It’s been 10 years since late Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007.

Apple’s Tim Cook gets $89 million stock payout
Apple TV with 4K and HDR support reportedly coming this fall

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is expected to release three new devices iPhone 8 along with the updated versions of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus that will be called iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus.

Following several leaks about Apple’s controversial yet virtually bezel-less redesign, a detailed iPhone 8 dummy model confirmed that the devices would have an elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, Forbes reported.

The iPhone 8 is expected to feature a bigger 5.8 inch display. However, the device’s overall foot-print should reduce considering the bezel-less display.

The iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus is reported to sport a 4.7 inch and a 5.5inch LCD sceen respectively. The smaller variant might sport 2GB RAM whereas the bigger, iPhone 7Plus will come with 3GB RAM to support the dual-camera.

Apple might also launch a new Apple Watch which supports a SIM card, making it a standalone device.

Apple TV
Apple is planning to unveil a new version of the Apple TV this September. According to a report by Bloomberg, the Cupertino-company is finally refreshing the Apple TV after nearly two years, bringing it up to 4K streaming standards.

The new set-top box will reportedly have a faster processor and support High Dynamic Range (HDR) video.

The 4K resolution represents a sizeable bump up compared to traditional “HD” resolution, allowing for sharper movies and TV, and HDR technology offers the greatest accuracy in how colors are displayed on a TV.
