Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and American prediction markets platform Kalshi will be introducing perpetual crypto futures, marking the first such occasion ever where crypto instruments will be available to United States-based investors through domestic, regulated exchanges.

Perpetual futures, or “perps”, are derivatives that ‌often lack a traditional expiration date, allowing traders to maintain positions indefinitely without the need to roll over contracts. These instruments also permit high degrees of leverage, often as much as 50-to-1, enabling investors to amplify their exposure to market moves.

The move follows the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) listing approval for the two firms, effectively transitioning perpetual futures from a regulatory grey area into the oversight of domestic exchanges by providing a formal onshore framework.

“The CFTC, however, also issued a policy statement on Friday clarifying its oversight of such contracts, mandating a case-by-case regulatory review process for any new perpetual products referencing assets beyond current approved listings. By housing these contracts within a CFTC-regulated framework, the exchanges aim to offer a secure alternative for institutional and retail investors previously forced to navigate opaque or offshore venues for access,” reported Reuters.

“Onshore, safe, and regulated perps will improve capital allocation ‌and risk management for countless American businesses,” said Tarek Mansour, CEO of Kalshi.

The contracts have surged in popularity over the past year, as crypto traders have sought new ways to profit from volatility amid a broader slump in token prices since October 2025.

As per the market data provider CryptoQuant, perpetual futures trading volume reached USD 61.7 trillion in 2025, up 29% on 2024. Critics, however, warn that perpetual futures introduce significant risks for retail participants.

Due to the fact that leverage can magnify losses rapidly, even minor adverse price fluctuations can wipe out a position, creating an operational landscape that, as per experts, requires a level of sophistication that individual investors may not always possess.

“The launch signifies a major strategic shift for Kalshi, moving it beyond its roots as a prediction market into the broader, high-volume world of financial derivatives. This marks Kalshi’s evolution from prediction market leader to next-gen derivatives exchange,” Mansour said.

Manhattan-based prediction market platform Kalshi has announced a new “Commodities Hub,” a dedicated product section for trading event contracts tied to the world’s most important physical markets. The hub’s launch, as per the company, will result in a significant expansion of the breadth of commodities listed on the platform.

“Over the past year, prediction markets have rapidly evolved from niche tools into a multi-billion-dollar financial category, increasingly used alongside traditional instruments for hedging and price discovery. Amid recent geopolitical uncertainty – the war in Iran, rising inflation, and political shifts in many of the world’s most powerful countries – the commodities market has exploded both in volume and volatility. Uncertain times call for more stringent risk management, and commodities markets sit at the heart of many of the world’s most important supply chains,” Kalshi said, while launching the commodities hub.

Users and institutions will now be able to trade on the future direction of key commodities such as energy, agriculture and precious metals. The hub will be open for activities on a 24/7 basis, including weekends, compared to traditional commodities markets, which remain closed for two days a week. Kalshi will even be providing pricing functionality amid after-hours volatility.

Alongside previous commodities markets of WTI and Brent oil, gold, and silver, Kalshi is launching markets on natural gas, coffee, copper, sugar, corn, soybeans, wheat, nickel, diesel and lithium.

“Even though commodities sit at the centre of the global economy, historically, access to these markets has been fragmented, capital-intensive, and often limited to institutions. Kalshi changes that with simple, binary event contracts. Market participants can take positions on questions like: Will crude oil exceed a given price threshold this month? Will gold finish the quarter above a key level? Will prices rise or fall? This approach abstracts away the complexity of futures, margin requirements, and contract rollovers, making it simple for anyone to hedge or speculate on the direction of the world’s most important commodities,” the prediction market platform said.

The launch of Kalshi’s Commodities Hub comes at a time when the Middle East conflict and the resultant disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have sent shockwaves through energy markets, pushing oil prices above USD 100 per barrel, apart from driving volatility across commodities.

“To complicate things further, uncertainty around inflation, supply chains, and global growth has heightened demand for tools that allow traders to express macro views quickly and precisely. With the simplicity of binary event contracts, Kalshi’s commodities offerings will meet this demand,” Kalshi concluded.

If Nevada pulls off its moves successfully, it will become the second state to secure a court order blocking Kalshi from offering sports event contracts

Recently, Nevada gaming regulators filed a lawsuit seeking to block prediction market operator Kalshi from offering event contracts that would allow the American state’s residents to bet on sports, including football and basketball games.

This development adds a new chapter to the battle over state gaming regulators’ ability to police companies like Kalshi, which allow users to place financial bets through their prediction markets.

The battle is set to escalate in the coming years, as the lawsuit came the same day the Commodity Futures Trading Commission threw its support behind companies like Kalshi, arguing it has exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets.

While Kalshi fought legally in recent months to prevent Nevada regulators from filing a case against the prediction market operator, a federal appeals court declined on February 17 to put on hold a judge’s November 2025 order dissolving an injunction that had previously prevented Nevada authorities from pursuing enforcement action.

If Nevada succeeds, it will become the second state to secure a court order blocking Kalshi from offering sports event contracts, following a Massachusetts judge’s injunction issued at the behest of the desert state’s attorney general on February 5. That injunction was set to take effect in 30 days, but a state appeals court justice put it on hold.

In its lawsuit, Nevada stated that offering sports event contracts, or certain other event contracts, constitutes wagering activity under Nevada state law, and due to this, Kalshi must be licensed. The authorities further accused the prediction market operator of not complying with state gaming regulations, including those prohibiting anyone under 21 from placing wagers and requiring entities accepting wagers on sports events to deploy safeguards against wagers by insiders, like players and match fixing.

The state has already convinced judges to issue orders barring two other prediction market operators, Coinbase and Polymarket, from offering event contracts. Nevada is seeking to have a state court judge issue a similar temporary restraining order against Kalshi, but the company, soon after Tuesday’s (February 17) case was filed, sought to transfer it to federal court, arguing the case raised a matter of law over whether it was subject to the CFTC’s exclusive jurisdiction.

On its part, Kalshi believes that only the federal regulator has sole jurisdiction over its event contracts as they are a form of swaps, a type of derivative contract.
