It was nothing short of a historic meeting in Singapore, when US President Donald Trump met North Korean Kim Jong-un earlier today. The two leaders signed a joint statement that read: “President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

President Trump said he expected the denuclearization process to start quickly, while U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials would hold follow-up negotiations at the earliest possible date, said the statement. Trump told the news conference that the process would be verified, and that the verification “will involve having a lot of people in North Korea”. He also said Kim had told him North Korea was destroying a major engine-testing site used for missiles, but international sanctions on Pyongyang would stay in place for now.

Meanwhile, joint military exercises with South Korea would be halted. Trump said this move would save Washington a lot of money, and would not be revived unless it sees future negotiations not going along as they should.

This meeting between Trump and Kim is a historic one, according to political punters. The efforts of South Korean president Moon Jae was instrumental to this summit, reported Bloomberg.

However, it is unclear if further negotiations will lead to the end goal of denuclearization,” said Anthony Ruggiero, senior fellow of Washington’s Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank. “This looks like a restatement of where we left negotiations more than 10 years ago and not a major step forward.”

A Trump administration official told The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, “The US has confirmed that Kim Jong-Un is willing to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.”

It is the first for North Korea to approach Washington directly. Previously, the information was conveyed South Korean national security adviser Chung Eui-yong, reported The Strait Times.

However, there has been no contact from Pyongyang with Washington, according to the Journal has worried the Washington officials about North Korea’s readiness to discuss the matter and come to a fair negotiation.

But reports said Kim is keen on ‘denuclearisation,’ which includes ‘withdrawing the promise of US “nuclear umbrella’’ to deter attacks on its treaty ally South Korea.’

Donald Trump gave his first address to the United Nations on Tuesday. By his standards, it was fairly tame.

Trump, speaking in the usually sombre setting of a UN General Assembly session, launched into a verbal tirade, berating North Korea for its “reckless” pursuit of nuclear weapons.

North Korea’s reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles threatens the entire world with unthinkable loss of human life. It is an outrage that some nations would not only trade with such a regime, but would arm, supply and financially support a country that imperils the world with nuclear conflict. No nation on Earth has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles. The United States has great strength and patience. But if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime; the United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary.

I spoke with President Moon of South Korea last night. Asked him how Rocket Man is doing. Long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!

Trump’s first UN speech met with criticism from some leaders

In his speech, he called Iran “a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy” whose “chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos”.

Bolivian President Evo Morales – an ally of the Venezuelan government – tweeted: “I am not surprised that a multi-millionaire like Trump attacks socialism. Our struggle will always be ideological and pragmatic.”

French President Emmanuel Macron, also speaking to the General Assembly, defended the nuclear deal with Iran. “Renouncing it would be a grave error,” he said.

But Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed Mr Trump during his speech, saying the deal with Iran should be amended or scrapped altogether, and warned against the spread of Iranian influence in the Middle East.
