Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has recently admitted that laying off thousands of employees during a two-hour, all-hands meeting over a call was a ‘bad idea’.

The enterprise software company in January 2023 laid off 10% of its workforce. The downsizing impacted about 7,000 employees, amid the ongoing global macroeconomic conditions (better to call it a recession).

In an interview with The New York Times, Marc Benioff said, “We were trying to explain the unexplainable. It’s hard to have a call like that with such a large group and have it be effective, and we paid a price.”

Marc Benioff faced heat from Salesforce employees for allegedly being evasive during the meeting.

“I wish I offered lifetime employment. But the reality is when you have a big company with 80,000 employees, there are going to be times you have to make a headcount adjustment. Our layoff packages are some of the most generous ever,” Marc Benioff remarked.

Earlier in February 2023, several Salesforce employees came to know about their firing. Around 4,000 staffers disappeared from the company’s Slack channel within two days.

In San Francisco, the layoff round hit 258 workers, affecting “sales and customer service”, “technology and product” and “general administration”, according to a WARN notice.

In Ireland, 200 of the company’s 2,100 employees received their notices.

In the United States, affected employees will receive a minimum of nearly five months of pay, health insurance, career resources, and other benefits.

“Those outside the United States will receive a similar level of support, and our local processes will align with employment laws in each country,” Marc Benioff had said.

Marc Benioff further stated that he went to French Polynesia for a 10-day trip in wake of the mass layoffs.

“We are so addicted to our devices (at least I am) it’s very freeing to leave them all behind for a while!” the Salesforce CEO remarked.

The term ‘Digital Detox’ is used to describe a period of time in which a person refrains from using electronic devices, in order to ‘reconnect’ with nature, take a break from social media and de-stress from digital life.

Meanwhile, trouble mounted further for the enterprise software company as Twitter in January 2023 cut its contract for Salesforce’s customer-management software by 75%, to USD 5 million a year from USD 20 million.

The move came amid the top executives taking more control of software purchasing decisions from lower-level managers amid an ongoing recession. This trend has put pressure on products such as videoconferencing service Zoom and the work-chat app Slack, owned by Salesforce, which now must compete with similar services offered by Microsoft and Google.

Amazon plans to lay off twice as many workers as it had previously confirmed. In the upcoming months, some 20,000 employees will be fired globally.

The organization rates employees from level 1 to level 7, and staff at all levels are likely to be affected, the Computerworld report claimed.

After Internet giants Meta and Twitter embarked on a layoff spree, The New York Times was the first to disclose in mid-November that Amazon will follow a similar route.

The company has reportedly told its managers to identify work performance problems among employees, a part of the staff layoff process.

If Amazon slashes these 20,000 employees, it would result in a 6% reduction in corporate staff and a 1.3% reduction in its 1.5 million-person workforce including global distribution center and hourly workers.

The affected employees will get severance pay and a 24-hour notice of the change.

“There is a sense of fear among employees in the company as the news has come out,” one of the sources told Computerworld, who was informed directly about the layoff effort. The layoffs would be the largest staff reduction in the company’s history.

After the NYT report, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed that layoffs were taking place in a public message to staff members on November 17. However, he did not provide any information regarding the anticipated number of layoffs.

“Our annual planning process extends into the new year, which means there will be more role reductions as leaders continue to make adjustments. Those decisions will be shared with impacted employees and organizations early in 2023,” Andy Jassy wrote in a public message.

Reportedly, Amazon spokesperson did not ascertain the number of employees being sacked, but reiterated the CEO’s November 17 message saying, “We haven’t concluded yet exactly how many other roles will be impacted (we know that there will be reductions in our Stores and PXT organizations), but each leader will communicate to their respective teams when we have the details nailed down.”

According to data from layoffs.fyi, a crowdsourced database of tech layoffs, at least 853 tech companies worldwide have laid off about 137,492 employees to date, and the tally is rising amid recession fears.

The data shows around 1,388 tech companies have fired a total of 233,483 workers since COVID-19 began, but 2022 has been the worst year for the industry.

More than 73,000 employees of US IT companies, including Meta, Twitter, Salesforce, Netflix, Cisco, Roku, and others, have been let go as a result of widespread employment layoffs as of mid-November.

According to Crunchbase, Robinhood, Glossier, and Better are just a few of the tech companies that have notably trimmed their headcount in 2022.

Amazon and printer giant HP Inc are two major IT firms that have joined the worldwide layoff season and were planning to fire more than 10,000 and up to 6,000 people, respectively, in the coming days.

“Employees should expect further layoffs at Amazon in the first quarter of 2023 as management continues to make adjustments”, says CEO Andy Jassy.

Numerous divisions have been affected by the drastic employment layoffs, but none more so than the Alexa virtual assistant company, which is expected to lose USD 10 billion this year because the voice assistant was unable to establish a reliable source of income.

According to reports, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, plans to fire 10,000 “low-performing” workers which is 6% of its workforce. Google is planning to lay off employees through a new ranking and performance improvement plan.

Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has warned that the startup ecosystem’s funding winter could last another 12 to 18 months and the industry may face a lot of turmoil and volatility.

According to the annual insights report by RazorpayX Payroll, the business banking platform of Razorpay, startups are going through steep hiring cuts and the hiring of permanent employees has dipped by a significant 61% in the last 12 months.
