Ternus, a 25-year-old Apple veteran and the company’s hardware chief, who will be taking over the top boss’ role, inherits a business with enormous financial strength, a global installed base of more than 2.5 billion active devices, and an annual revenue of more than USD 416 billion, but one that has struggled to match the AI innovation pace set by rivals such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

After completing his 15-year record-breaking tenure as CEO, during which he led Apple to unprecedented heights, Cook will assume the role of executive chairman, allowing him to remain engaged in policymaking.

The choice of Ternus is significant. Unlike Cook, who built his reputation on operations and supply-chain management, Ternus is an engineer and product executive. He joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became vice-president of hardware engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team in 2021.

He has overseen hardware developments across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods. His work on Apple silicon strengthened the Mac business by giving Apple greater control over processors and improving performance.

Apple’s effort to build “Apple Intelligence” has faced significant delays, especially regarding a more advanced version of Siri. As it strives to deliver AI capabilities across its devices, the company has sought outside technology, including partnerships with OpenAI and Google.

That strategy gives Apple access to powerful models but also raises questions about whether the company can develop enough proprietary AI technology to compete over the long term.

ALSO READ | Apple Upgrade turns your next iPhone into a monthly lease

The challenge is broader than Siri. AI is changing how consumers search, create content, use software, and interact with devices. Apple faces significant challenges as its competitive edge has historically relied on its control over hardware, software, and services.

And it is also struggling with supply chain snags, especially on the chip front. To deal with the industry-wide chip shortages, the tech giant has already lifted prices across its Mac and iPad ‌line-ups. It has also braced up for dampening sales figures in the current quarter.

Ternus must determine how AI should reshape the iPhone and wider Apple ecosystem without undermining the privacy and security principles that distinguish the company.

The timing is demanding. Apple is preparing for a major product cycle, with its September 9 launch event expected to showcase new iPhones and potentially its first foldable iPhone. It will be Ternus’s first major public product moment as CEO.

Analysts see high-end devices like the upcoming foldable iPhone eventually becoming the main driver of Apple’s higher selling prices and margin growth.

Investors will also be watching whether he can revive a perception that Apple has become more evolutionary than revolutionary. Cook leaves behind an extraordinary financial record.

Apple’s market capitalisation rose from about USD 350 billion when he became CEO to roughly USD 4 trillion, while services grew into a business generating more than USD 100 billion a year.

The company also launched successful new categories such as Apple Watch and AirPods and developed its own chip technology.

Yet Apple’s recent AI missteps have created a strategic vulnerability. The company is competing with smartphone rivals and technology companies spending tens of billions on AI infrastructure, models, and talent globally.

That could push Ternus toward a more hardware-led answer to the AI race. His engineering background may prove useful as Apple seeks to build devices in which AI is embedded rather than simply offered as a cloud service.

Future products such as foldable phones, smarter wearables, augmented-reality devices, and more powerful Macs could become important parts of that strategy.

There is also a management challenge. Ternus must preserve the operational discipline that made Cook’s Apple extraordinarily profitable while encouraging greater risk-taking and faster decision-making.

He will also have to manage relationships with suppliers, regulators, and governments at a time when Apple faces scrutiny over its App Store practices and remains dependent on a complex global manufacturing network.

For now, Ternus has the advantage of continuity. He knows Apple’s culture, products, and senior leadership from the inside and has worked under both Steve Jobs and Cook. Apple’s board has described him as the right leader to take the company into its next phase.

But continuity may not be enough. Scale, efficiency, and financial expansion defined the Cook era. The Ternus era will be judged increasingly by whether Apple can turn AI from a weakness into a new source of product leadership.

His first job, in other words, is not simply to make Apple smarter. It is to make sure the company does not fall behind while the definition of “smart” is being rewritten.

Trying to break Samsung’s monopoly
Currently, Samsung Electronics dominates the niche called the “foldable smartphone market,” with the segment touted to be the next mainstream despite its premium price tags.

Foldable phones are anticipated to be a promising opportunity for consumer electronics companies that have encountered challenges due to a significant shortage of memory and storage chips, leading to price increases and a decline in overall consumer demand.

As per the research firm IDC, there will be a 12.6% jump in foldable phone shipments in 2026, whereas conventional smartphones will see a record 16.7% export decline.

Analysts expect Apple to launch a foldable iPhone with a screen similar in size to an iPad mini. Earlier in 2026, Samsung unveiled a new passport-sized foldable phone as the South Korean tech giant seeks to consolidate its industry foothold.

Apple is expected to ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, IDC predicted.

In 2025, Apple unveiled a slimmer iPhone Air and loaded its iPhone 17 base models with several better features. The iPhone 17 line-up helped drive a strong upgrade cycle among consumers.

Apple has retired one of its most familiar ways of selling the iPhone. On July 28, the company launched Apple Upgrade in the United States, a hardware leasing programme that replaces the long-running “iPhone Upgrade Program” and stretches well beyond the phone itself. Instead of buying an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch outright, or paying it off in installments, customers can now lease the device for a fixed monthly fee, then hand it back, swap it for a newer model or buy it once the term ends.

The scheme is available on the Apple Store online, in the Apple Store app and at Apple Store locations across the US. The leasing itself is provided by Klarna, the buy now, pay later specialist, which runs a credit application with a soft credit check that does not affect the applicant’s credit score. There is no down payment and no upfront fee, a large part of the programme’s appeal.

Apple is pitching the change as a win for flexibility. The programme gives customers “a more flexible way to pay for the products they love”, in the words of Karen Rasmussen, Apple’s vice president of the Apple Store online, announcing the launch.

How the lease works

Customers choose a 12 or 24 month lease for an iPhone or Apple Watch, or a 24 or 36 month lease for an iPad or Mac. Anyone leasing an iPhone must connect it to AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at enrolment, although iPads, Macs and Watches can be leased without a carrier.

Trading in an existing Apple device at the start lowers the monthly payment, and Apple Card holders can earn Daily Cash on what they pay. One quirk worth noting is that a device ordered for store pickup must be collected within seven days or the lease is cancelled.

The crucial point is that the customer never owns the device during the term. Ownership sits with Klarna unless the customer chooses to buy the hardware when the lease expires. That is the fundamental difference from the old programme, which was structured as an instalment loan that always ended in ownership.

Three ways out at the end

When the term is up, there are three exits. Customers can upgrade to the latest generation of the device without an upgrade fee, purchase the device with a one-time payment covering the remaining balance, or simply return it and walk away.

Upgrading early is possible too, though it attracts a charge, and Apple’s own lease terms warn that customers “may incur substantial fees” for ending the agreement before the initial term runs out.

The economics of leasing an iPhone

Monthly payments start at USD 17.99 for an iPhone and rise to USD 31.99 for the priciest models on a 24-month term. Apple Watch and iPad leases begin at USD 11.99 a month, while Macs start at USD 24.99, with high-end MacBook Pro configurations reaching the high USD 30s to USD 50s.

Apple’s own worked example makes the maths clear. An iPhone 17 Pro with 256GB of storage retails at USD 1,099. On a 24-month lease, the typical payment is USD 31.99 a month, which adds up to USD 767.76 over the full term.

A customer who then wants to keep the phone pays a one-time residual of USD 31.24, bringing the total to exactly the USD 1,099 retail price. On a 12-month lease, the same phone costs USD 45.99 a month. All figures exclude taxes and trade-in credit.

ALSO READ | Ahead of iPhone 18 Pro launch, sensitive Apple data leaks onto dark web

The case for leasing is strongest when it is set against instalment plans. A standard 256GB iPhone 17 costs USD 33.29 a month to buy on a 24-month instalment plan, against USD 22.99 a month to lease over the same period.

That is a saving of more than USD 10 a month, or roughly USD 247 across two years. The trade-off is that after 24 months of instalments the phone is yours, while after 24 months of lease payments it is not.

What is not in the price

Unlike the old iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple Upgrade does not bundle AppleCare+. Extended warranty cover must be bought separately and is billed by Apple outside the lease.

That matters more than it might for a purchased phone, because a leased device has to go back in acceptable condition, and damage can trigger fees at return. Apple points out that AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss can help customers avoid those charges.

The programme also skips Apple’s entry-level hardware. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, Mac mini, iPad (A16) and Studio Display are all excluded, meaning the cheapest routes into the ecosystem still require an outright purchase or instalment plan. Why Apple wants you to lease
For Apple, the logic is straightforward. Leasing converts lumpy, unpredictable hardware sales into steady recurring revenue, keeps customers on a regular upgrade rhythm and binds them more tightly to the ecosystem.

Analysts have described it as the clearest signal yet that Apple is shifting towards a hardware-as-a-service model, selling ongoing access to devices rather than one-off products.

The timing is telling too. The launch follows price rises on some devices amid a memory chip shortage driven by the artificial intelligence boom, and iPhone prices are widely expected to climb further. A low monthly figure softens the sting of a rising sticker price.

Lease or buy

For users who upgrade every year or two anyway, Apple Upgrade is genuinely attractive. Payments are lower than instalments, nothing is owed upfront, and swapping to the newest model becomes routine.

For those who keep a phone for four or five years, the sums point the other way, since buying and holding remains the cheaper path and leaves an asset to trade in or resell.

Personal finance experts are more cautious. Thad Hwang, founder and chief executive of budget carrier Goji Mobile, told Yahoo Finance that buying outright remains the best move for anyone who can afford it, though he acknowledged that most people do not have a spare $1,000 sitting around and called Apple’s structure unusual for combining no money down, 0% financing and a lump-sum final payment.

Stoy Hall, a certified financial planner in Iowa, told the same outlet that the real risk is not any single payment but “what happens when that gets stacked on top of the car payment”, streaming services, buy now, pay later purchases and the other small monthly charges people barely notice.

Their caution is worth heeding, since fees for damage or cancellation and a separate AppleCare+ subscription can quietly erode the savings. As with any lease, the monthly figure is the headline, but the total cost of ownership is the story.

For iPhones, iPads, and Macs, Apple has publicly exposed critical security flaws that could theoretically allow attackers to seize total control of these devices.

Apple stated that it was “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.”

Apple recently published two security assessments regarding the problem, but nobody outside of tech media paid them much attention.

Users of the iPhone 6S and subsequent models, the iPad models starting with the fifth generation and later, the iPad Pro models, and the iPad Air 2, as well as Mac computers running macOS Monterey, have been advised by security experts to upgrade the affected devices. Several iPod models are also impacted.

Apple’s report of the flaw, states that a hacker could gain “complete admin access to the device” and “run any code as if they were you, the user,” according to SocialProof Security CEO Rachel Tobac.

People “in the public spotlight,” such as activists or journalists, who could be the focus of sophisticated nation-state eavesdropping, should pay extra attention to updating their software, Rachel Tobac said.

The number of users who were impacted by the vulnerability was not specifically stated by Apple. It consistently referenced an unnamed researcher.

Commercial spyware organizations like Israel’s NSO Group are renowned for spotting and exploiting these weaknesses in malware that covertly infects targets’ smartphones, siphons their information, and continuously monitors the targets.

The US Commerce Department has placed NSO Group on a “blacklist.” Its spyware has reportedly been used against journalists, dissidents, and human rights campaigners in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Will Strafach, a security expert, claimed that he has not seen any technical examination of the vulnerabilities that Apple has just patched.

According to Will Strafach, the corporation had previously disclosed comparable critical problems and highlighted that it was aware of claims that these security weaknesses had been exploited about a dozen different times.

CAMRADATA, a leading provider of data and analysis for institutional investors recently released a White Paper, ‘Where lies the future of Multi Asset Credit?’ compiled following a round table event with leading asset managers and investors held in June 2017.

Keith Cornelius – Trustee of the American Express UK Pension Fund, Mette Charles – Senior Investment Research Consultant, Alistair Sutherland – Consulting Director, Investment Services Team, Ravi Cheema – Senior Associate, Investment Team, Greg Fedorenko – Vice President, Manager Research and Brendan Maton – Freelance Journalist were the participants at the round table.

The White Paper considers the opportunities offered by Multi-Asset Credit (MAC) and investigates what the future holds for this asset class, both in this current macroeconomic climate and going forwards. Three MAC asset managers, Eaton Vance Investment Managers, Franklin Templeton Investments and Investec Asset Management also provided their own views and insights, helping to illustrate the benefit that can be derived from a Multi-Asset Credit Strategies (MACS) approach.

Sean Thompson, Managing Director, CAMRADATA said, “Global economic growth remains lacklustre and the outlook for inflation highly uncertain. Also, Government bonds are losing their income generating qualities, leaving investors no choice but to look elsewhere.”

“As a result MAC strategies have become increasingly popular over the past few years because of their flexible and diversified approach that makes them attractive to investors investing in this asset class,” adds Mr Thompson.

Key findings from the White Paper

MAC strategies typically offer a higher yield, while offering defensive qualities through dynamic risk management using several different credit asset classes. The strategy seeks to provide a strong income element on a consistent basis that few other assets can provide.

Credit is now seen as the go-to asset class to keep pension funds and insurers in good health. Bundles of mortgages, car loans, High Yield and Emerging Market debt are deemed more attractive on a risk-adjusted basis than holding company shares; and more generous than safer government bonds. As Justin Bourgette, a credit portfolio manager at Eaton Vance comments in the White Paper, “Credit is going to be part of the portfolio because of the attractive risk-adjusted returns.”

It is not just market returns that have caused investors to alter their traditional allocations. The regulation of pension funds and insurers has also supported more exposure to credit.

As Jeff Boswell, Strategy Leader of Developed Market Credit at Investec, points out, “Pension funds are being forced to look for more return by hunting further along the risk spectrum.” That journey brings asset owners to the likes of high yield, leveraged loans, structured credit and private debt, with a vast spectrum of available debt and credit options.

But the variety of opportunities in debt and credit also begs the question of how pension funds and insurers allocate. Do they employ specialist managers for each niche of their liking or do they appoint managers with flexibility to invest in a range of debt markets on a dynamic basis?

Alistair Sutherland, Consulting Director at Deloitte says, “Asset owners say they have the governance to oversee discrete mandates but most don’t. Better to give the discretion to the asset manager and leave them to use the building blocks as they see fit.” Many at the round table agreed.

Assets under management in MACS have boomed over the past three years. Tom Raftery, Credit Product Manager at Franklin Templeton, added that the popularity of MACS has led to massive product proliferation. “Buyers of MACS are in a tremendous position,” noted Raftery.

Essentially every offering is unique given the range of credit sectors that fit this type of mandate, and the differences in the philosophy, expertise, and/or geographic reach of the managers creating them. “To the extent that their research resources allow, consultants, other advisors, and investors can shop the market for MACS that offer exactly what they want in terms of sector exposure, risk/reward profile, and liquidity,” adds Raftery.

Looking ahead

Looking to the future, the challenge for MACS is establishing their territory. Plenty of pension funds and insurers are currently looking for Alternative Credit managers. Some of the funding will come from Investment Grade portfolios. MACS managers need to win the argument that they can cover the range from IG to Alternatives.

The consultants at the CAMRADATA round table said the variety of MACS meant that they could be appointed in combination to increase diversification. If large bond ETFs and long-dated bond funds get hurt in a rising rate environment, then MACS will put on assets.

However, most MACS themselves have not experienced a period of rising rates; the big question for investors is which type of strategy will better suit the times ahead, when neither businesses nor governments will be able to rely on cheap money.

Sean Thompson, Managing Director, CAMRADATA adds, “The current yield challenges facing many investors undoubtedly require a new way of thinking in terms of asset allocation. While credit has long been a core income generating component of many traditional asset allocation models, the evolution of financial markets, coupled with the complexities of investing in the current environment, have cultivated a different way of credit investing. Our White Paper is therefore, essential reading for investors looking at MAC strategies now and in the future.”
