Australian mining business Wollongong Coal will be suspending its last operational mine at Wongawilli in New South Wales for safety reasons. The decision was made after NSW Resources Regulator discovered a roof “fall” on the main belt road when miners went underground on April 1, Australian Securities Exchange reports.

The mine’s activities have significantly slowed down. Suspending the operations will eliminate 45 employees from the job force, mostly affecting operators, electricians, fitters, deputies, and other staff. The company said one part of the team will continue to engage in activities that involve care and maintenance.

According to Bob Timbs from the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, the workforce will be informed in advance about the company’s plans for Wongawilli. “They’re going to recover whatever equipment they can,” he said. “Some CAS Mining employees will remain at the site. They’re looking at redeployment options to other mines and/or Russell Vale.”

Many employees have been assigned to the task at the Russell Vale mine because of which Wollongong Coal is confident about resuming its mining activities once approvals come through. This development has been difficult for the company, with poor assessment of the mine’s environmental impact on the water catchment.

Microsoft has closed a deal worth $14.3 million with the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation as part of the NSW Government-Microsoft Enterprise Agreement. “The agreement allows NSW Government agencies to purchase Microsoft licences at discount rates set for the NSW Government,” a DFSI spokesperson told ARN.

The agreement is for a three-year period and commenced on June 1. The NSW Government said the deal allows license portability across agencies and boosts consistency in pricing and delivery. “The agreement was directly negotiated with Microsoft as it was not a request for delivery of products and services, it is an agreement setting the terms and conditions and the cost at which Microsoft will provide products and services to NSW Government customers,” the department spokesperson said.

The value of the agreement signifies the cost at which the company will offer products and services to NSW Government customers. “The three year DFSI contract covers licenses for DFSI staff to use Microsoft products including Office 365 and Microsoft server products,” the spokesperson added.

JERA, Squadron Energy and Marubeni Corp signed a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of LNG import terminal and a new gas supply project in New South Wales.

The trio’s move came in an effort to bridge Australia’s LNG supply gap to Japan, China and South Korea.

Squadron Energy being an Australian energy company is ready to set-up a better unit for the local community. Marubani is carrying operations in Australia for five decades with reasonable expertise in Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) market worldwide, and JERA has long-established itself in import terminal operations and LNG procurement.

Marubeni and Squadron’s prowess will diversify the feasibility study, while JERA’s global network will support LNG procurement.

According to a statement released by JERA’s press release, the feasibility study is focused on developing a terminal at an existing port in NSW. The terminal will include charting a FSRU, construction of onshore and offshore facilities and gas supply to NSW’s local customers.

James Baulderstone, a former executive at Santos Ltd. told Reuters, “This market is desperate for new gas.” Marubeni and JERA strongly believe the FSRU-based project will be ready in time to ensure stability and development of available energy sources in NSW. The project will also build strong ties between Japan and Australia and swiftly boost LNG supply in the Asia Pacific region.
