The US President Donald Trump accused China of undermining the country’s efforts to pressure North Korea into giving up its nuclear weapons

This served as an indication that the ongoing trade war with Beijing may exacerbate geopolitical tensions.

“North Korea is under tremendous pressure from China because of our major trade disputes with the Chinese Government,” Trump stated in a series of tweets Wednesday, which he called a White House statement. “At the same time, we also know that China is providing North Korea with considerable aid, including money, fuel, fertilizer and various other commodities. This is not helpful!”

Last week, Trump called off a trip to North Korea by Secreatary of Stae Michael Pompeo, stating that there hadn’t been enough progress in talks that were aimed at denuclearising the Korean Peninsula. He stated that he would most likely return after US trade disputes with China were resolved. China has repeatedly stated that it enforces United Nations sanctions on North Korea.

Trump’s remarks deepen concerns that the fallout from the trade spat will eventually morph into a protracted conflict–similar to last century’s rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union. Suspicions have risen in Beijing that Trump’s tariffs are part of a wider strategy to thwart China’s rise as a global power.

The trade war between the US and China is primed to escalate further after their governments failed to make progress last week. So far, the US has slapped tariffs on $50 bn worth of Chinese imports, with another $200 bn in the pipeline that could take effect as early as next month. China has retaliated with equal tariffs, and has pledged further measures.

“As for the US–China trade disputes, and other differences, they will be resolved in time by President Trump and China’s great President Xi Jinping,” Trump stated on Wednesday. “Their relationship and bond remain very strong.”

The US has leaned heavily on China– which shares a border with North Korea and is its largest trading partner– to help enforce tougher sanctions imposed last year against Kim Jong Un’s regime. Trump stated on Wedensday that China “is the route to North Korea.”

In hitting out at China, Trump seemed to be offering an olive branch to North Korea even as he acknowledged the talks are stalled just months after his historic summit with Kim. He stated that his relationship with Kim remained “very good and warm,” and that he saw no immediate need to resume military drills with South Korea and Japan.

In the months since Trump and Kim met in Singapore, the US has struggled to show signs of progress in its bid to get North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. Pompeo conceded before the Senate recently that the Kim government continues producing fissile material and has provided no inventory of its nuclear program and facilities.

In a diplomatic gesture to Pyongyang in June, Trump suspended what he called “war games” with South Korea, saying he believed Kim “wants to get it done” on denuclearization. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Tuesday said the US doesn’t plan to suspend more joint military drills amid reports that North Korea was rejecting American demands to give up nuclear warheads.

In his statement Wednesday saying that military drills would remain suspended, Trump added: “The President can instantly start the joint exercises again with South Korea, and Japan, if he so chooses. If he does, they will be far bigger than ever before.”

The US has conducted military exercises on the Korean Peninsula since the mid-1950s and holds a handful of joint operations with South Korea every year, which the Pentagon calls a means of ensuring the two forces are able to work together in the event of an attack.

These annual drills have long been a point of contention with North Korea’s leaders.

The two leaders pledged to work towards complete de-nuclearisation of North Korea and Washington would provide security guarantees for the Asian nation

It was nothing short of a historic meeting in Singapore, when US President Donald Trump met North Korean Kim Jong-un earlier today. The two leaders signed a joint statement that read: “President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

President Trump said he expected the denuclearization process to start quickly, while U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials would hold follow-up negotiations at the earliest possible date, said the statement. Trump told the news conference that the process would be verified, and that the verification “will involve having a lot of people in North Korea”. He also said Kim had told him North Korea was destroying a major engine-testing site used for missiles, but international sanctions on Pyongyang would stay in place for now.

Meanwhile, joint military exercises with South Korea would be halted. Trump said this move would save Washington a lot of money, and would not be revived unless it sees future negotiations not going along as they should.

This meeting between Trump and Kim is a historic one, according to political punters. The efforts of South Korean president Moon Jae was instrumental to this summit, reported Bloomberg.

However, it is unclear if further negotiations will lead to the end goal of denuclearization,” said Anthony Ruggiero, senior fellow of Washington’s Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank. “This looks like a restatement of where we left negotiations more than 10 years ago and not a major step forward.”

“If you divorce yourself from a general feeling of anxiety and just look at the facts and the numbers and what you can measure, you can say things look awfully good, and it feels like awfully good in a way that there could be a bit of a runway here for things to remain pretty good,” Blankfein concluded in a interview Squawk Box.

In his view, the inflation rate remains low impacting interest rates and commodity prices to drop than they would under normal standards. Blankfein does not foresee a trade war to extend between US and China due to unfavorable outcomes for both nations. He said US President Donald Trump’s efforts to pursue amicable trade arrangement between both nations is sensible, and they will take action to prevent a ‘real aggressive, mean-spirited trade war’.

“We need each other on a lot of other things as well. Look at the security situation in the world with North Korea. There are other things at stake here, maybe bigger things at stake that will provide another impetus for us getting together and working these issues out,” he added.

A Trump administration official told The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, “The US has confirmed that Kim Jong-Un is willing to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.”

It is the first for North Korea to approach Washington directly. Previously, the information was conveyed South Korean national security adviser Chung Eui-yong, reported The Strait Times.

However, there has been no contact from Pyongyang with Washington, according to the Journal has worried the Washington officials about North Korea’s readiness to discuss the matter and come to a fair negotiation.

But reports said Kim is keen on ‘denuclearisation,’ which includes ‘withdrawing the promise of US “nuclear umbrella’’ to deter attacks on its treaty ally South Korea.’

The Economic Impact of Cybercrime report highlights the annual global costs of US$600bn caused by the proliferation of sophisticated hackers and advanced technologies.

The report recently released by the US-based security software giant McAfee and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) shows theft of intellectual property acquired one-fourth of the cybercrime cost last year, Daily Sabah said.

Russia, North Korea and Iran are identified as the top source of hackers targeting financial institutions, according to the report.

CSIS is certain that Russia and North Korea take the lion’s share of cybercrime activities. James Lewis, senior vice president of CSIS, said, “Our research bore out the fact that Russia is the leader in cybercrime, reflecting the skill of its hacker community and its disdain for western law enforcement.

“North Korea is second in line, as the nation uses cryptocurrency theft to help fund its regime, and we’re now seeing an expanding number of cybercrime centers, including not only North Korea but also Brazil, India and Vietnam.”

There is an uneven distribution of cybercrime across countries globally. CSIS found a significant correlation between economic wealth and cybercrime loss rate. The likelihood of loss is more in countries with greater wealth. Countries identified with ‘the greatest losses’ belong to third-tier nations, which have not fully matured in cybersecurity.

The US is ready to hold discussions with North Korea leadership, according to Vice-President Mike Pence.

“[N]o pressure comes off until they [North Korea] are actually doing something that the alliance believes represents a meaningful step toward denuclearization,” Pence told Josh Rogin. “The maximum pressure campaign is going to continue and intensify. But if you want to talk, we’ll talk.”

The plan to negotiate was initiated during his stay in South Korea to attend the Winter Olympics held in Pyeongchang. The unified strategy could possibly end the nuclear conflict between both countries.

Last August, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and Tillerson on Wall Street Journal wrote, “The US is willing to negotiate with Pyongyang. But given the long record of North Korea’s dishonesty in negotiations and repeated violations of international agreements, it is incumbent upon the regime to signal its desire to negotiate in good faith.”

North Korea expert at Yale University, Mira Rapp-Hooper told Vox, “The position Pence just articulated sounds quite a bit like one the administration held over the summer—diplomacy alongside pressure.”

Pertaining to Pyongyang’s recent missile test, the US envoy Nikki Haley at the United Nations Security Council special session mentioned that the US President stated that China should cut off oil its supplies to Pyongyang.

Yesterday Pyongyang tested its third intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). It was asserted that the missile was capable of striking at anyplace in the United States.

The ICBM flew for more than 50 minutes off the coast of Japan for 210 km west of Aomori Prefecture in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone. In turn it activated South Korea’s test launch. The situation sowed seeds of political turmoil in the region after a silence of more than two months.Hwasong-15 was North Korea’s 20th launch of a ballistic missile this year.

Nikki warned that if war broke out if war broke out North Korea’s regime would be ‘utterly destroyed’. She also warned North Korea that such acts of ‘aggression’ will only make situations worse for the region.
Ambassador Nikki said, “We need China to do more. President Trump called President Xi this morning and told him that we’ve come to the point where China must cut off the oil for North Korea.

“We know the main driver of its nuclear production is oil. The major supplier of that oil is China.”

The US President himself made a Twitter post saying, “Just spoke to President XI JINPING of China concerning the provocative actions of North Korea. Additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea today. This situation will be handled!”
