In a setback for Apple and its key supplier Tata Electronics, sensitive lists of components and suppliers, along with photos of upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, have featured in the files posted on the ‌dark web by the ransomware group that reportedly stole data from the two companies.

The exposure has now put a massive threat on the iPhone’s global supply chain and manufacturing ecosystem, as rivals, counterfeiters, and the tech giant’s own vendors may end up accessing the dark web data and getting a glimpse of who makes what.

The setback will likely be even bigger for Tata, which both supplies parts and assembles iPhones in India as a contract manufacturer. The company has emerged as one of Apple’s most important manufacturing partners outside China, an expansion that has been often cited by the Narendra Modi-led administration in its push to make the South Asian giant an electronics manufacturing powerhouse.

Apple is reportedly on track to release its iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in September 2026. The data leak will put further pressure on the tech giant, which has already raised iPad and MacBook prices due to soaring memory and storage chip costs, a development that would directly weigh on its balance sheet and sales figures in the coming quarters.

As per Reuters, the Tata Electronics leak consisted of more than 200,000 files on the dark web by World Leaks, including the ones with “component design papers” of older iPhones and some parts of Tesla, both of which are Tata clients. They also broke into the documents of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) and Qualcomm, both of which make iPhone parts. The stolen files include at least six files that map many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to the specific companies that supply them. These include details of chips on its main circuit board and parts of the battery and cameras.

The stolen records also show where Apple draws a part from several suppliers and where it relies on just a few, laying bare both the tech giant’s bargaining leverage and its vulnerabilities within its global supply chain.

Apple is reportedly investigating the matter and working with Tata on long-term countermeasures. Tata, for its part, has hired a global consultant to conduct a forensic audit of both its IT systems and the leaked data. It has also tightened internal security protocols at all its facilities and offices to restrict remote access to sensitive internal tools only to “select employees.”

Tata Electronics, headed by former Intel and Applied Materials executive Randhir Thakur, is part of the legendary salt-to-aviation Tata conglomerate. Set up in 2020, Tata Electronics’ businesses cover semiconductors as well. However, this is not the first time a Tata conglomerate vertical has fallen prey to cyberattack. In 2025, Tata Motors was hit by a similar incident at its British Jaguar Land Rover unit, resulting in a six-week production halt.

Several of the leaked files also carried Apple “confidential” watermarks and internal Apple codenames consistent with the iPhone 18 Pro generation. The files also have images of iPhones undergoing drop tests at one of Tata’s plants, dated early 2026.

Talking about Apple-Tata Electronics, the Indian company became the flagbearer of the iPhone maker’s “China Plus One” approach. As of 2026, India is on track to make 26% of the world’s iPhones, up from the 2023 tally of 6%, according to the research firm Counterpoint.

California-based semiconductor startup Frore Systems hit the headlines recently, by raising a USD 143 million Series D, led by MVP Ventures, at a USD 1.64 billion valuation. The venture now has funding worth USD 340 million in total.

However, the catch is that Frore doesn’t make the chips themselves; the start-up’s speciality lies in creating liquid-cooling systems for these cutting-edge products. Founded by two former Qualcomm engineers, Dr. Seshu Madhavapeddy and Dr. Surya P. Ganti, the company started by offering air-cooling tech for phones and other small fanless electronics.

Frore Systems, which focuses on creating liquid-cooling systems for semiconductors, gained a new purpose a couple of years ago, after demonstrating the product to the NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. He suggested the start-up develop the technology further, envisioning it becoming the new normal for AI chips and systems in the coming years.

As of 2026, Frore Systems’ products work with various NVIDIA chips and boards. The company has also developed products for Qualcomm and AMD.

Making ‘AI Thermal Stack’ As Key Forte

According to Frore Systems, the new funding will accelerate the global scale-up of the start-up’s breakthrough thermal platforms, LiquidJet, LiquidJet Nexus and AirJet, across data centre and edge markets, as demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow globally.

Discussing Frore Systems’ key products, we find the start-up’s breakthrough innovation named the “LiquidJet Coldplate,” with features like multistage cooling architecture, 3D hybrid cells, and first-of-its-kind 3D short-loop jetchannel microstructures, all of which make the tool customisable to any GPU power map. Explaining the product, the venture remarked, “LiquidJet is engineered to scale with next-gen GPUs like NVIDIA Rubin, Rubin Ultra, Feynman and beyond, as well as for custom hyperscaler ASIC designs. As AI workloads explode, Frore Systems’ LiquidJet architecture is built to keep up.”

LiquidJet’s revolutionary direct-to-chip liquid cooling 3D coldplate solution has been tailored to meet the escalating demands of AI Data Centres, by unlocking higher performance from the world’s most powerful GPUs, starting with NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra. This delivers significant reductions in data centre total cost of ownership (TCO) and improves power usage effectiveness (PUE).

LiquidJet’s innovative multistage architecture concentrates the entire cooling flow around the chip’s hotspots. This contrasts with legacy coldplates, which rely on 2D flow through skived microchannels, limiting their ability to adapt to new chip layouts and increasingly non-uniform high power density requirements.

Frore Systems, while implementing its liquid cooling 3D coldplate solution, adapts semiconductor manufacturing with metal wafers. The next stage involves fabricating multistage cooling architecture, 3D hybrid cell structures, and innovative 3D short-loop jetchannel microstructures that are designed precisely to the power maps of modern GPUs.

Also, “LiquidJet Nexus,” an integrated lightweight coldplate system for “½U Compute Trays,” is designed to unlock the full performance of AI compute platforms.

“LiquidJet Nexus consists of multiple multistage 3D short loop jetchannel LiquidJet coldplates. Unlike traditional compute tray level coldplate implementations, which rely on multiple hoses, connectors, and manifolds, LiquidJet Nexus integrates the entire compute tray thermal stack into a tightly engineered platform, delivering a lighter, cleaner, and more efficient solution that enables 2x compute density, simplifies integration, and improves reliability across AI data centre deployments,” Frore Systems described the product.

LiquidJet Nexus incorporates the performance gains of LiquidJet coldplates, while reducing thermal stack complexity by eliminating all compute tray hoses, connectors and manifolds, halving the weight in the process. Apart from improving rack-level performance by over two times with reduced total cost of operation for data centres, LiquidJet Nexus has redefined the data centre thermal stack design into a strategic performance advantage for next-generation AI compute platforms.

Excelling In Solid-state Active Air Cooling As Well

Frore Systems’ “AirJet Mini Slim Chip,” built on the same revolutionary active cooling design as the “AirJet Mini,” is the world’s first solid-state active cooling chip. AirJet Mini Slim removes 5.25 Watts of heat at a silent 21 dBA noise level, while only consuming a maximum of 1 Watt of power. It also generates 1750 Pascals of back pressure, enabling sleek, dustproof devices. The tool has also created a separate place for itself in the AI industry, by reportedly becoming the thinnest and most advanced solid-state active cooling chip available, while remaining silent, lightweight and delivering superior performance over traditional fans.

Next, we have “AirJet Mini G2,” a thermal solution tailor-made for the current generation AI models. The world’s thinnest and most powerful solid-state active cooling chip. AirJet is a revolutionary, fully self-contained active heat sink module that removes 7.5W of heat, in addition to being silent, thin, light, dust-resilient, vibration-free, water-resistant and outperforming fans.

AirJet’s multiphysics design converges structural, fluidic, acoustic and electrical resonance. The product’s manufacturing process also involves the use of proprietary techniques that draw from multiple sectors, including semiconductor, flat panel display, aerospace and automotive.

“In modern computing, heat limits performance — not the capability of the processor. AirJet Mini G2 flips that equation, ensuring compact electronic devices can now deliver on the promise of full performance. It generates 1750 Pascals of backpressure — powerful enough to pull air through the most compact enclosures, even in rugged embedded systems,” Frore Systems noted.

‍

Meet AirJet PAK

We are talking about ‍Frore Systems’ other “Plug and Play Solid-State Active Cooling” solution, which, by accelerating the performance of Edge AI, is transforming industries like transportation and logistics, industrial manufacturing, smart retail, smart city, healthcare and agriculture.

Explaining the tool, the start-up said, “AirJet PAK is a fully self-contained, plug-and-play thermal solution that includes multiple AirJet chips and drive circuitry. It mounts directly on AI SoM Modules like NVIDIA’s Jetson Orin, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and DragonWing, and AMD’s Versal and Kria.”

AirJet PAK integrates multiple AirJets to remove the increasing heat generated by intense AI workloads. This unleashes the AI performance needed for Edge AI. The product is also a fully integrated, self-contained, plug-and-play active cooling solution, as thin as 6.5mm, making it easily addable to a host device.

This is a breakthrough innovation, given the fact that the need for improved cooling to enable AI is increasing rapidly, as the demand forecast sees Edge AI-based computing likely increasing by over 300% by 2030. It is the factor called “heat,” that limits the technology’s performance. However, with AirJet’s introduction, AI applications will get a new lease of life.

“Driven autonomously, the AirJet PAK can independently sense the surrounding temperature using Thermoception, an innovation that allows the AirJet PAK to optimise its performance, maximising heat removal without relying on temperature sensors in the host device. All the AirJet PAK needs to enable exceptional processor performance is a nominal power source from the host device,” Frore Systems concluded.

Numerous devices that use MediaTek and Qualcomm connectivity gear have been exposed to security concerns due to a set of 5G modem vulnerabilities known as 5Ghoul.

Following a responsible disclosure period, researchers from the Singapore University of Technology and Design first published about the vulnerabilities after the two chipmakers revealed details on 5Ghoul in their December advisories.

Mobile phones, USB modems, and routers used on the premises (CPE) could all be vulnerable to the long list of flaws that have been found thus far.

How Safe Are The 5G Gadgets?

The researchers have so far discovered twelve additional vulnerabilities in addition to the two that they had already discovered. Ten of those have an impact on Qualcomm and MediaTek 5G modems, which in turn have an impact on over 710 distinct smartphone models, including well-known iPhone models.

Moreover, high severity classification has been assigned to three of the ten modems that are affected by Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Hostile actors could use the flaws to deceive a 5G-capable device into connecting to a rogue base station. The researchers stated, “The target UE will connect to the adversarial gNB once the attacker is close enough to the target [user equipment—UE] and the adversarial gNB’s Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) is higher than the legitimate gNB.”

The paper further states that to finish the NAS network registration, the attacker does not need to know any private information about the target UE, such as the SIM card details. Using the given cell Tower connection characteristics (e.g., SSB ARFCN, Tracking Area Code, Physical Cell ID, Point A Frequency), the attacker just needs to mimic the authentic gNB.

Many of the vulnerabilities have already been fixed by Qualcomm and MediaTek; however, many end customers have not yet seen the benefits. According to the report, an Android fix is expected this month, but iPhone owners may have to wait until 2024.

Google has announced that it will acquire a 7.7 percent stake in India’s telecom giant Reliance Jio in a deal worth $4.5 billion, the media reported.

As per the deal, both parties will jointly develop smarter and cheaper JioPhone with Android OS for India. The announcement was made by Reliance Industry owner Mukesh Ambani during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2020.

During the event, he said, “Even though we have sold over 100 million JioPhones… there are many feature phone users who are waiting to upgrade to a conventional smartphone, if only it were somehow more affordable. So we have decided to address this challenge.”

Recently, US-based wireless technology company Qualcomm also invested around $97 million in India-based Reliance Jio Platform. The deal will see them acquire a 0.15 percent minority stake in Reliance Jio.

Prior to the Google deal, Reliance Jio had raised more than $15.7 billion in the past 12 weeks from as many investors such as Facebook, Intel and many more.

Intel Capital, the venture capital arm of American chipmaker Intel, has invested around $253.5 million in India’s telecom giant Jio Platforms., the media reported.

The deal will see Intel acquire a 0.39 percent stake in Reliance’s Jio.

In the month of April, Facebook also bought a 10 percent stake in Jio Platforms. The deal follows Facebook’s decision to launch a payment feature for WhatsApp in India.

Launched in 2016, Reliance Jio has established itself as a telecom giant in India in a short spell due to its competitive pricing strategy. Backed by multibillionaire Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Jio disrupted the Indian telecom sector which led to many telcos exiting the market with Vodafone on the brink of shutting down its business in India.

Russia is a relatively developed mobile market with 89 percent of the population subscribing to mobile services at the end of 2018. Russia’s high level of subscriber penetration is impressive as it exceeds the developed markets globally and broader Europe which have corresponding figures of 84 percent and 85 percent, respectively.

In fact, Russia was one of the first countries to launch 4G in the region in 2012. Russian operators have been making significant investments in 4G network deployment to improve coverage and speed in recent years. Despite that, it has only covered less than a third of Russia’s network connections, while half of Europe’s connections were 4G, observed the GSMA 2019 report.

GSMA analysts believe that growth in the number of mobile subscribers in Russia will largely remain unchanged in 2025 because of the current high level of mobile penetration in the country.

Russia’s accelerated efforts to migrate to 4G and the first phase of 5G suggests that there will be further data growth. Russian operators have been testing the 5G technology using prototypes and pre-5G standards for many years, the report noted. They are even deploying LTE-A networks which is critical for 5G migration. One of Russia’s mobile network operator MTS carried out a significant 5G trial with demo zones setup at the FIFA World Cup last year showcasing a range of 5G capabilities.

The country’s deep focus on 4G rollouts and 5G launches implies that it could join the second wave of global mobile markets. The report forecasts that the first commercial 5G deployment in the country will reach 46 million by 2025, which represents 20 percent of the overall connections base. The estimated population covered will be 60 percent by then.

By the numbers alone, Russia is expected to be above the global average but behind leading 5G markets such as the US, South Korea and China. The country will adopt a non-standalone deployment approach with 5G positioned as a supplementary capacity overlay to 4G, according to the report.

Currently, Russia has deployed its first 5G zone as part of a five-year deal between Ericsson and European telecommunications operator Tele2. The goal is to drive network transformation spanning Tele2’s infrastructure across Russia. The first 5G pilot zone is on Tele2’s commercial network in Moscow, according to Ericssion’s official press release.

Another manifestation of 5G pilot launch is seen in the country as Huawei and MTS have partnered to introduce a swift network covering the full extent of Moscow. This 5G pilot scheme is reported to have a political significance with Huawei planning to transition its smartphones and tablets to Aurora OS developed by Russian telecom Rostelecom. Rostelecom is controlled by the Russian government — and by definition, Aurora OS has become a state-sponsored software. Recently, the media reported that Huawei will install the Russian OS on 360,000 of its tablets for use in Russia next year.

The current technological divide between the US and its allies — and China and its supporters, including Russia — known as Splinternet — is stoking fear among intelligence agencies and technology giants. Huawei’s first stage of launching the Russian OS on its devices is creating a sense of loss in sector control and revenue for major players such as Intel, Google and Microsoft.

Russian carriers ready for the 5G battle

That said, telecom players in Russia already on the 5G development or investment path. This year, MTS signed 5G cooperation agreements with global equipment vendors, in addition to launching a 5G partnership with the Moscow government. MTS identifies robust growth opportunities in Moscow comprising nearly 20 million residents. At some point, it also plans to setup a 5G lab in the city to incubate startups developing fifth generation connectivity-based products and services. Even MegaFon has started to build small 5G trial zones with 5G field trials in mm band and EMC trials in 3,4-3,8 band.

Russian carriers are rapidly completing field trials of 5G infrastructure and terminal equipment to successfully launch the technology in Moscow and other cities by 2019 end. Industry newcomer Vinsmart is collaborating with Fujitsu to create and deliver smartphones based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G mobile platform. The phones will be marketed in the US, Europe, Russia and other markets in April 2020.

5G-compatible smartphones are needed because the Russian Digital Economy has made it compulsory for all cities with over 1 million populations to have only 5G networks by 2024. Russian carriers are already preparing to create operational networks followed by commercial networks in the next two years.

Inessa Galaktionova, MTS first vice president for telecommunications, told International Finance, “In terms of network infrastructure, we are planning to move from pilot zones to a broader rollout over the next several years. In line with previous technology transitions, the first priority will be covering high-density, high-traffic urban hotspots. We will then gradually shift to nationwide expansion, with 5G capex ramping up as investment in 4G phases down. Beyond basic infrastructure, we expect 5G to create fundamentally new business models and monetisation strategies, and we are in a great position to substantially contribute to these developments.”

According to a MegaFon representative, the operator will be working on small field trials in 2020 and 2021, following which a nationwide rollout base will take place depending on the trial results and market development.

Spectrum allocation is a challenge

Because of the persistent absence of n78 (3.3-3.8 GHz) spectrum allocation required to support 5G in the Russian market there are challenges in implementing 5G zones, according to Qualcomm. Even though the existing 5G mm wave assignment will assist the rising demand for enhanced mobile broadband in business centres, airports, railways stations, venues, and stadiums — deficiency of EU industry standard n78 might curb upcoming 5G locations and extend breakeven time for mobile network operators investing in the technology in short to medium term.

“The market is still working out the right business model to deliver 5G services efficiently and at scale. The other challenge is, of course, the regulatory aspect of a new, even revolutionary, technology. Telecom companies worldwide are closely engaging with their respective governments as well as global industry bodies to define the right regulatory approach, and Russia is no exception. MTS is very much involved in the discussions,” Inessa added.

One of the biggest roadblocks for MegaFon was that no spectrum was allocated for 5G in 3,4-3,8 GHz band. However, it is expected that a solution will enable it to launch 5G in this band, MegaFon said.

Geographically, Russia is the largest country in the world with a huge need for connectivity. This year, it launched a five-year programme with with the aim of speeding up digitalisation in the economy which can be achieved by improving network availability, resilience, and security. MTS noted that 5G will play a crucial role in achieving the programme’s goal to boost industrial productivity, stimulate growth, and improve people’s lives. It appears that 5G will speed up digital adoption among consumers. With Russia being one of the few markets globally where domestic digital players outperform international ones — there is a good chance for MTS to venture into new digital segments that complement its core telecoms business. It is working to build its own digital ecosystem involving fintech, media, clouds and cybersports. Speaking of mobile connectivity in the future, MTS explained that 5G will act as a growth platform in those key areas.

In many ways, new digital infrastructure will advance the expansion of economic sectors from ‘classic’ software development and hardware production to science to education to healthcare to entertainment. From Qualcomm’s perspective, 5G services would establish new use cases for millions of mobile users — and encourage the creation of new business concepts — and jobs.

5G rollout and the ‘Digital Economy’ plan

In fact, MetaFon supports the discussion that 5G rollout is associated with the overall national programme ‘Digital Economy’. The operator believes that 5G will provide it with additional throughput and latency reduction to reinforce the cloud services footprint in its mobile network. With that, 5G could become the basic network for the likes of driverless cars and delivery drones.
Russia is anticipated to swiftly scale 5G following the launch of its first 5G networks in 2020, according to GSMA study. Its forecasts suggest that there will be 5G commercial deployment from 2020. Moving forward, the rate of 5G adoption will factor in consumer demand and availability of compatible devices.

Currently, MTS is one of Europe’s largest telecom operators with more than 75 million active users on its network in Russia. MTS further explained that 5G in contrast to the first four generations of mobile connectivity is tailored to enable massive machine-type communication (mMTC).

With IoT expansion, hundreds of millions of things such as cars, wearable devices, and industrial equipment will be connected online. This means, there is a significant scope for growth among telecom operators. MTS, for example, is leading the way with the largest narrow-band IoT network in Russia. The operator is already well established to achieve incremental revenue in industrial automation and process control.

For now, MegaFon only has test users on its network and the majority of them are expected to adopt 5G technology after 2030.

Yulia Klebanova, VP Business Development, Qualcomm Eastern Europe, told International Finance, “The speed of broad 5G adoption in Russia would depend upon multiple factors. Trust me, one of the most critical ones is timely resolution of Sub 6 (n78) spectrum to ensure broad coverage of 5G networks on vast territories of Russia.”

The first use case of 5G will be seen in traditional mobile connectivity, with the launch of high-end 5G-capable smartphones. Inessa said, “As 5G migrates down market and penetration increases, it will play a critical role in ensuring network capacity keeps pace with the ongoing rapid growth in data consumption. Looking further ahead, enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) will also provide users with fundamentally new experiences and ways to interact with the world around them — for instance in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). Beyond mobile connectivity, ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) will have profound implications for emerging new applications, such as in edge computing, autonomous vehicles, and remote surgery.”

Qualcomm, like most technology companies has the same faith invested in 5G technology. “As soon as the first 5G launches in Russia are driven by priority mm wave spectrum assignment, initial 5G networks would cover downtowns, business centres, airports, and other locations with intense data traffic consumption at megapolises like Moscow,” Yulia explained. After 5G implementation, video streaming in high definition up to 4K will become the technology norm equivalent to what 4G LTE currently delivers on audio streaming.

The China – Russia 5G angle

Russia’s 5G efforts will create huge opportunities for telecom operators and their users. The GSMA report highlighted that the industry will benefit through outcomes involving lower equipment prices as production increases and minimising investment burden in the near future. At present, operators are stifled with investment demands such as the cost of implementing the new Yarovaya law. Meanwhile, a report by China’s official media Global Times noted that Russia has proposed to consider implementing 5G networks with 4.4-4.99 GHz bandwidth primarily used in China and Japan.

With Trump’s Huwaei ban, Google has suspended business with the company in terms of access to updates of its Android operating system. That said, chipmakers like Intel and Qualcomm have also stopped supplies to the company in an effort to comply with orders from the US government. With the Trump administration seeking to blacklist Huawei worldwide implies that China is heavily reliant on foreign chip technology.

Google spokesperson said, “We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications.” He also added that for Google users, services such as Google Play and protections from Google Play Protect will function normally on existing Huawei devices.

According to reports from Bloomberg, Intel, Broadcom, and Qualcomm are freezing their business with Huawei, until further notice. The move is effective immediately. Another Bloomberg report suggests that Huawei has anticipated this situation for a long time. The company has stockpiled enough chips and other components in an effort to keep its business running for at least three months.

“The impact on Huawei will be extremely significant. An obvious impact is on the supply chain, but there is another layer of impact on confidence and its overall business,” Cui Kai, a telecom analyst with IDC, said. “It will also have a negative impact on the 5G technology evolution around the world.”

The Trump administration’s move against Huawei may have consequences in the near future. For example: blocking the sale of components such as semiconductors could affect the business between Qualcomm and Micron Technology, and stall 5G wireless networks’ developments worldwide.

According to Kai, Huawei has been well prepared in various areas, including ‘R&D and business continuity’ to ensure its operations are not severely affected under similar circumstances.

The President of US Donald Trump has halted Singapore-based semi-conductor manufacturer Broadcom’s US$ 117bn takeover of chipmaker Qualcomm, over national security reasons.

In an executive order, Trump said there is ‘credible evidence’ to believe that Broadcom’s takeover of the US-based Qualcomm might threaten to impair the national security of the US. The US President has given orders to immediately and permanently abandon the proposed takeover.

In the executive order Trump stated today: “The proposed takeover of Qualcomm by the Purchaser is prohibited, and any substantially equivalent merger, acquisition, or takeover, whether effected directly or indirectly, is also prohibited.”

If this deal was carried out successfully, it would have been the biggest technology deal so far. Also, China would have gained control over mobile communications and is said to be most significant reason behind Trump putting a stop to the takeover.

In a letter, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) had confirmed the national security concerns. “A shift to Chinese dominance in 5G would have substantial negative national security consequences for the United States.”

“While the United States remains dominant in the standards-setting space currently, China would likely compete robustly to fill any void left by Qualcomm as a result of this hostile takeover.”

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said: “This decision is based on the facts and national security sensitivities related to this particular transaction only and is not intended to make any other statement about Broadcom or its employees, including its thousands of hardworking and highly skilled US employees.”

“The CFIUS process focuses exclusively on identifying and addressing national security concerns. This focused mandate reinforces our commitment to welcoming foreign investment, while at the same time reinforcing our commitment to protecting national security,” he added.
