In line with their ambitious growth and expansion strategies, Sharjah Airport and Air Arabia, inaugurated their first direct flights to Warsaw and Vienna in December 2024. These two new European destinations have become the latest additions to the expanding network of direct international routes from Sharjah, offering Middle-East customers greater travel options at competitive costs to destinations across the globe.

The launch event was attended by Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA), along with senior executives from Air Arabia. Joining them was Dr. Etienne Berchtold, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the UAE, who attended the inaugural ceremony for the Vienna route alongside other dignitaries and officials.

“The new route to Warsaw, Poland, will operate five weekly flights (Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) between Sharjah Airport and Warsaw Chopin Airport using Airbus A320 aircraft. Warsaw becomes the second city in Poland to be connected directly to Sharjah, following Krakow,” the Emirates News Agency reported.

The Vienna route will operate four weekly flights (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) using Airbus A320 aircraft to and from Vienna International Airport.

Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Airport Authority, said, “The new routes enhance trade and economic exchange opportunities between the UAE, Poland, and Austria while fostering foreign investment with both European nations. This initiative further solidifies Sharjah’s leading position on the Middle East’s aviation and cargo transportation map and provides a strong boost to its growing economy across various sectors.”

Adel Al Ali, Group Chief Executive Officer of Air Arabia, commented, “The launch of our new route to Warsaw and Vienna underscores Air Arabia’s unwavering commitment to expanding our network and offering passengers more travel opportunities to explore exciting destinations.”

Talking about Air Arabia, the low-cost carrier in December 2024 also introduced a new non-stop flight connecting Sharjah and the Russian city of Sochi. Three weekly flights on this route will start operating from June 2025, while using Airbus A320 aircraft for the service.

With this addition, Sochi has now become Air Arabia’s sixth Russian destination, joining Moscow, Kazan, Samara, Ufa, and Yekaterinburg.

Sharjah Airport and Air Arabia celebrated the opening of the first direct flight from Sharjah to the Maldives, which was a significant milestone for Sharjah’s standing in the global travel and tourism industry.

Hassaan Waheed, the Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), attended the flight’s inaugural ceremony along with representatives and directors from Air Arabia and the Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA).

Using Airbus A320 aircraft, Air Arabia will schedule daily flights between Sharjah Airport and Velana International Airport in Malé, Maldives.

“Sharjah Airport continues to expand its presence on the international travel map, and we are committed to adding new direct destinations for airlines operating through the airport. The launch of the first direct flights from Sharjah to the Maldives is another milestone added to the previous destinations announced by Air Arabia this year. This reaffirms our deep commitment to expanding our international network and providing passengers with a unique travel experience and outstanding services,” Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority said.

Sharjah Airport is working harder to provide the greatest services for passengers flying directly to the Maldives because it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Al Midfa continued.

He pointed out that this new route also emphasises Sharjah Airport’s contribution to the region’s aviation industry, developing tourism and economic relations between the Maldives and the United Arab Emirates, and creating new opportunities for trade and economic collaboration between the two nations.

“The inaugural flight to the Maldives represents an exciting new chapter in our network expansion. We are excited to offer our customers direct access to this tropical paradise. With the addition of this new route, we reaffirm our commitment to provide affordable and value-driven air travel while offering more options to explore new destinations around the world,” Adel Al Ali, Group Chief Executive Officer of Air Arabia commented.

Sharjah Airport recorded 13.6 million passengers in 2019, with a 13 percent year-on-year growth compared to 12 million passengers in the previous year, according to the Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA). The airport’s passengers data was revealed during a meeting held in Sharjah.

The meeting was led by Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority. Also, the SAA during the meeting highlighted the airport’s achievements last year and discussed plans that will be executed through 2020.

Sharjah Airport has developed expansion plans to drive growth. The airport is expected to increase its capacity to 20 million passengers annually by 2025.

The air freight sector in particular grew to more than 148.751 thousand tonnes in 2019, a local media report said. Last December alone recorded 11,674 tonnes. The air freight volume from last January to December reached 15.290 thousand tonnes, marking an increase of 12.12 percent compared to the same period last year.

According to Ali Salim Al Midfa, “During 2019, there were a number of achievements in all areas — including services that aimed to enhance customer happiness and provide an exceptional passenger experience.”

Ali Salim Al Midfa noted that the aircraft traffic increased 6.45 percent to 86,5000 take-offs and landings compared to 812600 in 2018. The increase can be attributed to the additional airlines and new flights in the Sharjah Airport, the media reports said.
