The successful establishment of smart cities involves the employment of advanced technologies. The aim is to help these cities attain the goals of being inexpensive yet proficient.

Tech Republic‘s report states these four tips will set smart cities apart from the rest or the ones in the making by the following best practices:

Hierarchical management commitment

Although there are chances of preliminary disagreements in altering the GIS-traffic management approach, Laura Schewel, CEO, Streetlight Data, said: “Decision makers have to decide that they are going to replace older data collection and performance measurement tools and streamline existing processes.”

Analysing the differences between before and after implementing the new changes

Following up and accessing the impacts of the new infrastructure changes are very crucial. “Processes need be put in place to measure both the before and after effects of making a change based on the analytics,” said Schewel.

Systems to be more diagnostic-oriented

Systems should be modified to be more diagnostic-oriented. These diagnostics will be aid to planners and those accountable for setting up maintenance activities because they own the know-how about the infrastructure hurdles.

A system install that engages people as well

Installing advanced technologies like enhanced analytics and IoT shouldn’t be only implemented. These technologies should engage people so they know for themselves how the new system works, and shouldn’t be prone to any change or adoption of the new system.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Cities and Urbanization today publishes Data-Driven Cities: 20 Stories of Innovation, a collection of 20 of the most creative ways cities worldwide are drawing on big data to improve services and quality of life.

The purpose of the report is to help city leaders make sense of the different data available to them and, more importantly, how to best use the data to design and deliver better services. The list, selected by a diverse panel of experts drawn from academia, industry and government, covers five key areas of city life: people, economy, governance, infrastructure and the environment.

Innovative approaches of data-driven city innovation highlighted in the report include:

Boston, USA: The city developed CityScore; an online dashboard showing how the city government is performing against 24 metrics. A single, composite, daily score summarizes how the administration is performing overall.

Copenhagen, Denmark: Dynamic signs and ‘intelligent’ street lights are helping cyclists beat the traffic.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Gulf city is driving an effort to implement blockchain in as many government services as possible by 2020.

Fukuoka, Japan: The city is using algorithms to migrate freight and public transport vehicles to hydrogen fuel cells powered by human sewage.

Kolkata, India: A social enterprise, Addressing the Unaddressed, is using geographic information systems (GIS) to map unplanned settlements, providing addresses – and vital services – for their inhabitants.

Quito, Ecuador: Bájale al Acoso, a mobile platform for women to report sexual harassment on the municipal public transport system, is already improving the way the city is policed.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: While many cities are using predictive policing to anticipate crime, Rio de Janeiro’s CrimeRadar is the first service in the world to make data on crime accessible to the public, helping people make informed decisions on how to minimize the risk.

Yinchuan, China: Seamless public transport has been made easy with the deployment of facial recognition technology to automate the payment process.

“The Forum seeks to empower cities as they prepare for the social, economic and technological transformations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The ability to collect data, correctly interpret it and apply the results will be key to driving these advances. We hope these stories serve to steer future conversations and catalyse innovative actions as they have already motivated our work on a new initiative, Cities and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, aimed at defining and measuring the readiness of global cities,” said Cheryl Martin, Head of Industries and Member of the Managing Board, World Economic Forum.

“It is now more important than ever to understand the consequences of data – how it can affect people’s lives. This is the goal of the data stories we have collected in this report. Big data is far more than just a matter of quantity: it is Big Promise for our cities as they face the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” said Carlo Ratti, Director, SENSEable City Lab, MIT and Co-Chair of the Global Future Council on the Future of Cities and Urbanization.

New customers can complete their account opening formalities and walk out with their ATM cards and cheque books within 15-20 minutes

July 23, 2014: Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB), the largest Islamic bank in the UAE, has announced the launch of ‘Smart Bank’, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a ‘Smart City’.

With Dubai taking the lead to become the most modern and smart city in the world, DIB has positioned itself to become a cornerstone of this vision. Smart Bank, a revolutionary concept promises a customer experience seldom witnessed in the service industry. Riding on its strong technological prowess, the bank is focused on setting new benchmarks in the field of customer interaction by making it quick, seamless and even pleasurable.

“For us, Smart Bank is not just a slogan, but a philosophy that reflects in every molecule of our interaction with the bank’s vast and expansive client base”, said Dr. Adnan Chilwan, CEO, DIB. “This novel and innovative idea is an extension of our Customer First program built around customer centricity and focus. Fully aligned with Dubai’s long term ambitions, we are committed to transform the banking service industry through extensive and innovative use of technology leading to a completely new and refreshing experience for all our customers and stakeholders,” he added.

DIB aims to have the Smart Bank concept built into the customer experience across its entire client base, individual or institutional. “One of the key elements of this endeavor is a paperless transaction culture, which embodies DIB’s commitment not only to enhanced customer experience but also to CSR and sustainability,” mentioned Dr. Chilwan, underpinning the bank’s pledge to support Dubai’s future strategic agenda.

The new platform will serve the growing demand for banking services by allowing customers to complete their banking transactions at DIB branches electronically through an entirely seamless process with faster turnaround times.

New customers can now complete their account opening formalities and walk out with their instantly issued ATM cards and cheque books within 15-20 minutes.

System integration with the Emirates Identity Authority enables uploading of customer information directly from the Emirates’ ID cards into the bank’s systems. Customer transactions are completed without filling forms using handheld electronic devices with digital signatures taken for secure and efficient processing.

DIB has already launched the paperless, smart bank experience for customers across 12 of its branches in the UAE, with plans to roll it out across its entire network of 90 branches by the end of October 2014.

In line with the Smart Bank initiative, the bank also recently announced a tie-up with Dubai Smart Government (DSG), which will electronically link the Government’s Resources Planning (GRP) Systems and Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) to automate the financial processes for government suppliers and salary payments. The full automation of electronic payments with DIB allows staff at any government entity to send the due payments to suppliers and the salaries of employees directly through the automated and fully integrated platform provided by DIB.
