TPG Telecom will not accept new signups for its free trial services in Singapore after it announced a SIM-only commercial plan, the local media reported. This is TPG’s first commercial plan in Singapore. Also, more attractive prepaid plans are in the pipeline.

The company’s SIM-only plan comprises $10 monthly for 50GB of data which is found to be the cheapest in the market currently. In addition, the plan will offer 300 local call minutes, 30 local SMS — and free 1GB roaming to selected countries from May onward. For existing users, TPG Telecom’s launch of the new trial plan will continue to run as long as it does. Then, users can choose to convert to the new $10 plan on the basis of their requirement.

TPG is Singapore’s fourth telecom provider. Previously, it had launched a free trial service with unlimited data which has led to more than 400,000 TPG subscribers in the city-state, to date. The Australian operator has more than 2 million customers in Australia.

TPG Singapore’s acting chief executive Richard Tan told the media, “What we want today is just to come out with a simple and easy to understand plan that provides the best value for customers. There will be more and more devices that require always-on connections, and that’s where we see the opportunity for Singapore customers to try out our services for the additional devices they have.”

The telecom operator was one of the three bidders for Singapore’s 5G licence. The other two operators were Singtel Mobile and M1.

Celcom, Digi and Maxis sign an agreement for fibre infrastructure development

Malaysia’s oldest telecom provider Celcom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Digi Telecommunications and Maxis to explore jointly deploy fibre backhaul and rollout fibre to base stations in the country, media reports said. The plan by the Malaysia telecom majors will help to enhance 4G connectivity nationwide.

Celcom is part of Axiata group, which is one of the largest wireless carriers in Malaysia. The three telcos seek to explore opportunities in fibre infrastructure development.

The fibre infrastructure rollout in Malaysia will improve 4G connectivity nationwide supporting the Malaysian government’s National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP). NFCP aims to enhance the broadband, reduce broadband prices and improve internet access.

The MoU is also expected to explore the best deployment practices for network enhancement in a cost-effective manner. Also, the deployment will help to prevent duplication of infrastructure building and expansion of Malaysia’s connectivity.

The partnership between the three telcom is significant for Malaysia’s 5G deployment. Celcom, Digi Telecommunications and Maxis will combine their knowledge and expertise in the development of their fibre infrastructure nationwide, media reports said. The infrastructure development will include designing, building, commissioning, operating and maintaining.

Albern Murty, CEO of Digi Telecommunications, told the media, “This MoU is an extension of our existing successful partnership with Celcom on fibre deployment, and we look forward to work with both parties to ensure we cater for better customer experience across the country.”

Recently, Celcom enabled Voice over LTE (VoLTE) on its 4G network for high-definition voice calls. This will ensure the phone remains on 4G even during a call. With that, the telco is moving closer to 5G readiness.
