The US Department of Transportation announced a $2.04 billion investment to modernise the country’s rail network on April 20. The funding flows through the Federal Railroad Administration’s CRISI Programme. It is essentially a grant scheme that helps railroads, state governments, and transit agencies pay for improvements they couldn’t easily afford alone.

What kind of improvements? Think upgraded tracks that reduce delays, better signals that prevent collisions, safer road crossings where cars and trains meet, and stronger connections for short-line railroads. They mostly cover the smaller regional lines that carry grain, timber, and manufactured goods out of rural America.

Passenger rail gets attention too, particularly for lines that have grown overcrowded as ridership rebounds from pandemic lows.

“Under President Donald Trump, America is building again. This administration is focused on improving passenger rail to help American families connect to jobs, education, and medical appointments, as well as fast-tracking the movement of commerce. At USDOT, we are laser-focused on ushering in the Golden Age of American rail,” said US Transportation Secretary Sean P Duffy.

Applications are open until June 22, and eligibility is broad. The administration says priority will go to projects that create jobs, improve safety, and keep freight moving efficiently.

A more resilient US rail is a direct counter to Chinese supply chains, and cheaper domestic freight gives some respite against tariff wars, and boosts defence logistics for an Indo-Pacific pivot.

The stakes are real. Rail trespassing alone kills hundreds of Americans every year. Freight bottlenecks on key corridors push up costs for businesses and, eventually, consumers. This $2.04 billion is part of a larger push. The government has separately committed $6.7 billion to the Northeast Corridor, the busiest passenger rail stretch in the country. Together, they signal genuine ambition to rebuild infrastructure that, in many places, hasn’t seen serious investment in decades.

The challenges are equally real as private railroad companies control much of the network, environmental reviews take time, and coordinating across federal, state, and local layers is never simple. But if the money is deployed well, the payoff of cheaper freight, cleaner transport and safer crossings could be substantial.

Bristow Group, a leader in global vertical flight solutions offering helicopter-powered offshore energy transportation and search and rescue (SAR) services, has taken delivery of the first two of five Airbus H160 medium-twin choppers leased from Milestone Aviation Group. The aircraft are undergoing final preparations in Nigeria ahead of entry into offshore operations in the coming months. The handover follows the agreement announced in December 2019 for five H160s leased from Milestone, which are now set to enter offshore operations in the coming months.

“The introduction of the H160 into Nigeria represents a meaningful step forward for our offshore operations in West Africa. This aircraft brings a combination of advanced technology, operational flexibility, and improved fuel efficiency that strengthens our ability to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation for our customers. Its performance profile, particularly its range, payload capability in a 12-passenger configuration, and ability to operate from smaller helidecks, positions Bristow with a distinct advantage in this market. We believe the H160 will play an important role in supporting the evolving needs of the energy sector across the region,” Stu Stavely, Chief Operating Officer, Offshore Energy Services, Bristow Group, said.

“Milestone is pleased to support Bristow with the lease of five new H160s, making us the first lessor to introduce this aircraft type into Bristow’s fleet. Our continued investment in next-generation medium and super medium helicopters ensures our customers have access to the most efficient and capable aircraft on the market, supporting mission-critical operations around the world. We appreciate the strong collaboration with Bristow and Airbus and look forward to further strengthening our partnership in the years ahead,” remarked Pat Sheedy, Chief Executive Officer of Milestone.

“The arrival of these first two H160s in Nigeria is a proud moment for Airbus Helicopters as we see our latest medium-twin aircraft prepare to take flight for Bristow’s offshore missions. This delivery underscores our commitment to supporting the energy sector with a helicopter that sets new standards in safety, comfort, and competitiveness with its 18% reduction in fuel burn.

SOCAR Terminal, operating under SOCAR Türkiye, has once again demonstrated its leadership in Türkiye’s maritime industry by receiving two prestigious honours from International Finance in 2025: “Most Integrated Port Operator – Türkiye” and “Best CFO – Maritime Transportation – Türkiye,” awarded to its Chief Financial Officer, Kutlu Vardar. These accolades highlight the company’s dual strength in operational excellence and financial stewardship, both of which shape the future of port logistics in the region.

During an interaction with International Finance, Uygun Degirmenci, CEO and General Manager of SOCAR Terminal, said, “We are honoured to be recognised as Türkiye’s Most Integrated Port Operator for 2025. This award reaffirms our commitment to sustainability, digital transformation, and seamless operational excellence. At SOCAR Terminal, we look beyond today’s needs, shaping solutions for the future of global trade. Guided by innovation, environmental responsibility, and long-term value creation, we remain determined to set new benchmarks for our industry.”

The SOCAR Terminal is one of the largest container and general cargo port in Türkiye’s Aegean Region. With a 700-metre continuous quay, 16.5-metre water depth, and an annual capacity of 1.5 million TEUs, the facility is one of the few in the country capable of accommodating Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS). Its 48-hectare area, equipped with three ship-to-shore cranes, ten rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and advanced land-side infrastructure, ensures the safe and efficient handling of multiple vessels simultaneously.

The terminal achieved strong results in 2024, handling 541,114 TEUs and hosting 630 vessels. These operations contributed directly to Türkiye’s imports and exports while generating regional economic value through customs, warehousing, and transport services. By mid-2025, the terminal had already processed more than 257,000 TEUs, sustaining its growth momentum.

Beyond container operations, SOCAR Terminal has become a hub for general cargo and heavy-lift projects, particularly in the renewable energy sector. Wind turbine components and oversized project cargo have strengthened the port’s expertise, while land-side operations achieved 226,465 gate movements in 2024, demonstrating high levels of efficiency in integrated logistics.

SOCAR Türkiye has taken a major step to expand and globalise its port operations under SOCAR Terminal

Digital transformation is central to SOCAR Terminal’s strategy. The company has introduced automated gate systems, pre-gate applications, AI-assisted cargo damage detection, and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) projects to improve workflow efficiency.

Unified digital platforms provide real-time visibility into operations, enabling faster decision-making, stronger governance, and enhanced customer service. These innovations have set new standards in the industry, reflecting SOCAR Terminal’s belief that technology is the key to sustainable growth.

Sustainability continues to be a core focus of the company’s vision. It has measured its carbon footprint in line with ISO 14064-1:2018 standards and has committed to renewable energy projects, including solar power, while upholding a strict zero-waste policy. With plans to expand handling capacity to one million TEUs, the terminal is positioning itself as a sustainable logistics hub, not just for the Aegean Region, but for Türkiye’s broader trade network as well.

The “Most Integrated Port Operator – Türkiye 2025” award highlights the company’s holistic approach, combining infrastructure excellence, digital innovation, and environmental stewardship. SOCAR Terminal plays a vital role in the nation’s long-term trade strategy, advancing competitiveness in the Aegean Region and beyond.

While infrastructure and technology have remained critical pillars, financial governance has been an equally important driver of SOCAR Terminal’s success. CFO Kutlu Vardar, honoured as “Best CFO – Maritime Transportation – Türkiye 2025,” has redefined financial leadership at the company. With a career spanning PwC, Petkim, Tesco Kipa, and APM Terminals Türkiye, he has built expertise in risk management, financial governance, and digital transformation. Since joining SOCAR Terminal in 2018, Vardar has spearheaded ERP integration, established sustainable cash flow models, and replaced fragmented reporting systems with a unified digital platform for budgeting and consolidation.

These initiatives have improved transparency, accelerated closing cycles, and strengthened governance. For Kutlu Vardar, finance is not merely about numbers but about vision. He views risk as a strategic guide, agility as a necessity, and ethics as the cornerstone of leadership. The International Finance recognition highlights the CFO’s personal achievements and the resilience and transformation of SOCAR Terminal.

Together, these two awards showcase the integrated strength of SOCAR Terminal: world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge digitalisation, sustainable practices, and visionary financial leadership. The company plays a vital role in Türkiye’s global trade ambitions, setting benchmarks for innovation and integration in maritime logistics.

In addition to these achievements, SOCAR Türkiye—the country’s largest foreign direct investor and integrated industrial group—has taken a major step to expand and globalise its port operations under SOCAR Terminal. The company has entered into a strategic partnership with MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the world’s largest container carrier. Under the agreement signed in Baku on 15 September 2025, MSC’s global port operating subsidiary, Terminal Investment Limited (“TIL”), will become a shareholder in SOCAR Terminal.

Through this partnership, SOCAR Terminal will be integrated into TIL’s extensive global network, enhancing its existing capacity with new equipment and technology investments while improving operational efficiency. Furthermore, the terminal will make significant advances in digitalisation, sustainability, and infrastructure development. SOCAR Terminal is steadily progressing toward becoming not only the Aegean’s but the entire Eastern Mediterranean’s high-technology, secure, and sustainable logistics hub.

SOCAR Terminal’s journey is far from complete. With a commitment to continuous improvement, environmental stewardship, and forward-looking strategies, it is not just responding to today’s demands but actively shaping the future of port operations in Türkiye and beyond.

A huge number of travellers had their flights delayed or cancelled on November 9 in what seems to be the worst day for civil aviation-related disruptions since the start of a US government shutdown, as Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned of worse to come in the run-up to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Airlines cancelled more than 2,800 flights and delayed more than 10,200 on the third day of government-mandated flight cuts due to rising air traffic control staffing shortages, after thousands of delays and cancellations snarled traffic on November 8.

The government shutdown, which lasted for a record 40 days, has led to shortages of air traffic controllers who, like other federal employees, have not been paid for weeks.

“It’s only going to get worse… the two weeks before Thanksgiving, you’re going to see air travel be reduced to a trickle. Many of them are not going to be able to get on an aeroplane because there are not going to be that many flights that fly if this thing doesn’t open back up,” Duffy said on CNN’s “State of the Union” programme.

And the timing of the disruption couldn’t have been worse, as it coincided with the run-up to Thanksgiving, one of the most important US holidays, which this year falls on November 27. Millions of people usually travel during the national holiday.

Although the US Senate has voted to advance a bill to end the government shutdown, the issue here is that despite the bill’s passage, it must be approved by the House of Representatives and sent to President Donald Trump for his signature, a process that could take several days. While talking about the administration’s plan to deal with the ongoing aviation crisis, Duffy said that his department is not planning to revoke the flight cuts until controllers begin returning to work and safety data improves.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already instructed airlines to cut 4% of daily flights at 40 major airports due to safety concerns with air traffic control. Flights are mandated to be reduced to 6% on November 11, then to 10% by November 14. The staffing issue has been seen at 12 air traffic control towers.

American Airlines urged quick approval of the Senate bill, noting that for 40 days, “federal aviation workers haven’t been paid and our customers have endured thousands of delays and cancellations due to the government shutdown.” Many airlines have already planned their cancellations for the coming days. United Airlines, for example, will cut 190 flights on Monday and 269 on Tuesday, the company told Reuters.

As per Duffy, a growing number of controllers have retired since the beginning of the federal shutdown on October 1. The FAA is 1,000 to 2,000 controllers short of full staffing.

“I paid experienced controllers to stay on the job and not retire. I used to have about four controllers retire a day before the shutdown… now up to 15 to 20 a day are retiring,” the Transportation Secretary noted.

Some 1,550 flights were cancelled and 6,700 were delayed on November 8, up from 1,025 cancellations and 7,000 delayed flights the day before.

Airline officials privately said the number of delay programmes made it nearly impossible to schedule and plan many flights and expressed alarm about how the system would function if staffing issues worsen. The crisis will have its far-reaching impacts on the broader American economy, said White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett.

“Thanksgiving time is one of the hottest times of the year for the economy… and if people aren’t travelling at that moment, then we really could be looking at a negative quarter for the fourth quarter,” he told the CBS show “Face the Nation.”

Trade association and lobbying group Airlines for America, which represents major carriers, said staffing issues had disrupted more than four million passengers’ travel plans since October 1, when the shutdown began. The body estimates the ongoing crisis to have a daily economic impact of USD 285–580 million.

The cuts include about 700 flights from the four largest carriers: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. As the government shutdown continues, some 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 security screeners are working without pay.

The start-up’s small design allows the venture to iterate designs in days, apart from building tons of hardware onsite, and, most importantly, applying game-changing fusion energy to applications from lunar surface power to transportation to the deep sea.

Avalanche recently caught attention for operating its desktop fusion machine for hours on end while maintaining 300,000 volts, a figure the start-up predicts will allow it to build a reactor capable of generating more energy than it consumes, the “holy grail” for any fusion company.

Whereas other fusion companies need powerful magnets to generate energy, Avalanche’s design uses intense electrical currents to draw fast-moving ions into tight orbits around an electrode. As the density and speed of the ions rise, they begin to collide and fuse, releasing energy in the process.

What Avalanche Is Up To

The Seattle-based start-up, while developing enormously energy-dense compact fusion machines for clean power generation, is focusing on keeping the products’ designs small, as in the words of the venture, “Our small design allows us to iterate designs in days, build tons of hardware onsite, and apply game-changing fusion energy to applications from lunar surface power to transportation to the deep sea.”

According to Robin Langtry, Avalanche’s co-founder and CEO, his company specialises in building small reactors, targeting anywhere from five kilowatts to several hundred kilowatts. The density of that voltage, six million volts per metre, will also become important in the coming days, as with the help of such breakthrough technology, Avalanche expects it will be able to generate a large number of neutrons at low cost, which can be used to make radioisotopes and evaluate materials for use in fusion reactors.

The company recently got a USD 10 million contract from Washington State to build “FusionWERX,” a testing facility where other fusion companies and researchers can book time to study their own fusion technologies. The grant money comes from proceeds from the state’s carbon marketplace. At the facility, fusion companies and researchers will be able to test their hardware and retain full ownership of their IPs.

“FusionWERX will serve as a first-of-its-kind commercial-scale testing facility for advanced fusion technologies, offering access to private companies, universities, national laboratories, and public-private consortia working to accelerate the path to commercial fusion power,” Avalanche stated.

Langtry also sees the sales of radioisotopes and rentals of the FusionWERX facility making Avalanche profitable in 2028, as the start-up eyes generating USD 30-50 million worth of revenue by 2029. As per reports, the venture is looking to raise a Series B round.

Fusion Approach

Avalanche’s “Fusion Approach” revolves around high-speed ions electrostatically confined in processing elliptical orbits around a negatively charged cathode, through three stages: Ion Injection, Ion Capture, and Ion Densification. Fusion here refers to the generation of energy through the process of nuclear fusion. At its core, fusion power aims to replicate and harness the same powerful physics that drives the sun and the stars. Throughout the fusion process, light elements such as hydrogen are forced together under extreme heat and pressure to form heavier elements, releasing an immense amount of energy; four million times more energy than an equal mass of coal.

“Research and development in fusion power, advancements in fusion technologies, high-voltage power systems, computing, and magnets are accelerating, bringing us closer to practical fusion energy systems. While fusion power may not be realised immediately, it holds the promise of transforming our energy landscape, delivering an abundant and sustainable source of power for a cleaner, more prosperous future,” the start-up stated.

Avalanche’s Big Bet

A fusion reaction does not release greenhouse gases. And unlike nuclear fission, fusion does not produce long-lived radioactive waste. In the event of any unforeseen disruptions, the fusion reaction naturally ceases, minimising potential hazards. To power fusion, five different fuels exist and are practically limitless in supply. Depending on the power needed, some fuels are more easily accessible.

Fusion releases roughly four million times more energy than an equal mass of burning coal, and four times more than nuclear fission. By reducing dependence on finite fossil fuel reserves, fusion provides nations with greater energy independence. Fusion also meets the rising global energy demand without depleting natural resources or causing irreparable harm to the planet.

“Fusion energy generation requires the merging or combining of light atoms, such as hydrogen, to form heavier elements, while fission energy generation is the process of splitting or fragmenting heavy elements into lighter ones. How is fusion cleaner than fission? Fusion reactions do not produce long-lived radioactive waste materials as a byproduct. In contrast, fission reactions generate radioactive waste that requires careful management and long-term disposal due to the long half-lives of certain fission products. How is fusion safer than fission? Fusion energy devices require exceptionally difficult conditions to continue the fusion process. In contrast, fission reactors require precise control mechanisms to prevent uncontrolled chain reactions that generate too much energy, possibly leading to accidents. Any disruptions to fusion conditions, on the other hand, result in the natural cessation of the reaction,” Avalanche commented.

The Orbitron

Avalanche is developing a 1–100kWe compact fusion machine called “The Orbitron,” ultra-small and ultra-lightweight in its category, where high-speed ions get electrostatically confined in processing elliptical orbits around a negatively charged cathode. The unique physics of the Orbitron allows for its compact size, which is a key enabler for rapid development, scaling, and a wide variety of applications.

“The Orbitron design is small enough to sit on a desk, making it a game changer for a wide variety of applications, from lunar surface power to transportation and micro-grids. The Orbitron’s small scale reduces hardware, labour, and lead time to build, test, learn, and iterate. We can iterate on reactor components in days, allowing us to learn fast, at orders of magnitude cheaper than alternative fusion approaches. Our small-scale Orbitron design lends itself to high-speed production line manufacturing techniques, dramatically lowering the cost of fusion power with economies of scale,” the start-up stated.

The Orbitron can be packaged as a single cell from 5kW to 100s of kW capacity, grouped as needed to get to megawatt-scale clean energy solutions. The reactor design also avoids the expense and complexity of high-powered magnets or lasers. Talking about the reactor design, it is capable of fusing fuels like proton-boron-11, which practically eliminates internal neutron radiation, resulting in longer life and lower shielding requirements for a lighter power pack.

“The fusion core is the very high vacuum chamber that confines the fusion plasma. The coaxial chamber is surrounded by a magnetic bottle, specifically tuned to trap high-energy electrons. The central electrode pulls high-energy ions into orbits. The deep vacuum keeps them confined in orbits for long periods. The fuel injectors ionise fusion fuels, such as Deuterium and Tritium, and accelerate the ions as a beam into the fusion core. The fuel injector systems contain the fusion fuel storage, controlled release, ionisation, focus, and acceleration systems required to feed a high-energy beam of fusion fuel ions into the fusion core,” Avalanche continued.

Once energy is released from the fusion reaction within the fusion core, high-energy particles will bombard the inner walls of the chamber, heating it. Avalanche’s first phase of energy extraction will be for a Deuterium-Tritium system, which will release neutrons. The heat generated from neutron bombardment will be converted to electrical energy with a thermal cycle, utilising turbines.

Founded in 2021 to help companies improve their shipping supply chains and reduce costs through a tech-enabled network of shippers, carriers, and warehouses, Warp, as of 2025, has a new vision: making supply chains even more efficient by automating its web of warehouses with robots.

In the words of Daniel Sokolovsky, the co-founder and CEO of Warp, the start-up is always looking for ways to make shipping more efficient for its customers, which include large businesses like Walmart, Gopuff, and HelloFresh. As artificial intelligence (AI) has become the new norm in the 21st-century world economy, the company now believes there are opportunities through which supply chains can be further automated.

Sokolovsky told TechCrunch that while Warp can’t automate long-haul trucking or short-range delivery aspects of the supply chain, it focuses on what it can change: the workflows inside its warehouses.

Engineering Logistics At Scale

Warp started its journey by installing cameras in its test warehouse in Los Angeles, using computer vision to convert that data into a virtual warehouse for experimentation.

“We effectively made a digital twin, or simulation environment, for our LA facility. \[We] basically started just throwing stuff at the wall. Honestly, a lot of it was, ‘What happens if we do this? What happens if we do that? What happens if we do that other thing?’” Sokolovsky said.

One of the start-up’s first ideas was to train humanoid robots to use traditional pallet jacks, but it didn’t work. Then, Warp started to find success using off-the-shelf robots with additional tech retrofitted onto them.

“We’ve taken really, really complicated logistics problems, divided them into a lot of easily digestible, system-understood, and system-fed components. We are now using, whether it’s AI in the form of voice, text, email, phone calls, or robotics, \[to ensure] that we’re unloading, storing, and reloading freight. We actually think that we can continue this and really reach our goals as quickly as possible, without hiring more people,” Sokolovsky added.

Warp’s co-founder and CRO (Chief Revenue Officer), Troy Lester, said that these robots will help support Warp’s underlying warehouse partners (other than its Los Angeles test facility). The start-up doesn’t outright own the warehouses in its network, a move that helps reduce labour costs.

“They’re complaining to us about staffing issues all the time. The labour that’s doing the work in these facilities isn’t happy either. So, I think there is an opportunity to empower those businesses to have these robotic kits that would not only help make our network better but also improve their business with other companies,” Lester said.

Warp has raised USD 10 million in its latest Series A round, co-led by Up.Partners and Blue Bear Capital. The start-up is testing several different versions of the robots, with the goal of deploying them by the end of 2025.

The start-up has optimised everything from hyperlocal parcel movement to national freight networks. In doing so, Warp uncovered a massive flaw in the LTL (Less Than Truckload) system, finding that it’s not suitable for modern supply chains, as the mechanism is slow, rigid, and most importantly, blind to the precision today’s shippers demand. To address this, Warp has brought its digital hub-and-spoke network into play, aiming to transform the middle mile and move freight the way it should.

Meet The Solutions

Warp’s LTL solutions allow users to share trucks and cross-dock space, cutting costs without compromising the quality. The start-up consolidates freight with others, maximising efficiency and minimising clients’ transportation costs—all while keeping deliveries fast, reliable, and sustainable.

While conventional LTL methods have drawbacks like class-based pricing, reweighs, rebills, and hidden fees, which make invoices unpredictable and drive up costs, there are also issues such as inefficient transit with multiple touchpoints, long dwell times, and inconsistent routing that lead to delays and missed delivery windows.

Additionally, limited tracking and inconsistent scan data leave shippers in the dark about shipment status. Excessive handling at terminals often increases the risk of damaged or lost freight, while limited vehicle types, lack of temperature-controlled solutions, and inflexible scheduling often fail to meet diverse shipping needs.

Addressing these drawbacks, Warp’s LTL solution optimises smaller shipments into fuller loads, cutting costs and eliminating LTL inefficiencies, in addition to offering per-pallet rates that eliminate class-based pricing, reweighs, or rebills. The solution also provides tailored options for scheduled deliveries, on-demand pickups, and temperature-controlled freight to fit customers’ needs.

Clients can also choose from a range of vehicles, including cargo vans, box trucks with lift gates, drop trailers, and 53-foot temperature-controlled trucks for any load size. Lastly, live updates, scan-in/scan-out tracking, and POD confirmation ensure complete transparency from pickup to delivery.

Launched less than a year ago with 14 core lanes, the LTL network now spans over 500 digitally connected lanes, representing a 3,400%+ increase, as the company aggressively scales its alternative to traditional terminal-based freight.

Next is “Inbound Consolidation,” under which Warp consolidates its clients’ purchase orders and optimises appointment scheduling at the start-up’s digital cross-dock. The integrated process then delivers freight efficiently to the final destination. This solution boosts load efficiency by merging shipments, reducing empty space, while achieving measurable cost savings and speed.

Businesses can optimise their freight flow with consolidated deliveries, cutting administrative tasks while boosting efficiency and transit speed, in addition to cutting transportation costs by uniting shipments into one efficient delivery, lowering freight expenses and fuel consumption. Consolidated shipments reduce hand-offs and errors, ensuring dependable schedules and consistent deliveries.

Through “Pool Distribution,” Warp harnesses shared routes to consolidate similar shipments, reducing costs and transit times while providing real-time visibility and streamlining operations for efficient middle-mile logistics. The start-up’s digital routes optimise delivery speed and precision across all stops, while consolidating shipments via a digital network to reduce costs and improve delivery speed.

Smarter routing also results in fewer trucks on the road, reducing emissions and enhancing efficiency. Finally, smart shipment tracking and data-driven delivery scheduling make the whole solution cutting-edge.

Efficient, Reliable Delivery For Bulky Items

Warp has engineered a home delivery solution for oversized freight that avoids the usual pain points. Since products like saunas, furniture, and treadmills don’t fit into parcel or standard LTL systems, the start-up uses appropriately sized box trucks and cargo vans, routed directly from cross-docks to customers’ homes. This solution is also streamlined, ensuring efficient deliveries with fewer touchpoints and, most importantly, no inflated charges.

By bypassing congested sorting hubs, Warp eliminates bottlenecks and reduces transit times for parcel shipments. Combining real-time tracking, optimised routing, and a versatile fleet, Warp offers a seamless, efficient zone-skipping service for faster and more reliable deliveries.

Also, Warp reportedly helped an apparel retailer save over 27% by using the same trucks and cross-docks for inbound and outbound shipments, cutting costs and ensuring on-time deliveries. Cross-docking and zone-skipping also reduced delivery times by 20%, keeping shelves stocked.

Airloom Energy, the company pioneering low-cost and resilient energy generation in the United States has been making waves in the renewable energy sector for quite some time now. Backed by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the company recently announced its pilot site groundbreaking near Rock River, Wyoming. At this research and development site, the start-up will build its first utility-scale turbine, designed to generate more energy at a lower cost and with increased efficiency amid the prevailing need for energy security and independence in the world’s largest economy.

According to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), approximately half of the United States is at risk of energy shortfalls that could cause outages and reduce power supplies by 2035. Combined with the surging demand driven by the increased use of AI and reliance on data centres, global research and advisory firm Gartner predicts that 40% of existing facilities around the world will face constraints in accessing sufficient power as soon as 2027.

Low-cost, high-efficiency energy is critical for the grid, requiring bold innovation and long-overdue improvements to power system design and deployment. This is where Airloom Energy aims to become a force of change.

What Airloom Energy Is Up To

In the words of Neal Rickner, CEO of Airloom Energy, “Current energy technologies can’t meet the growing complexity and demand of the next decade. With growing electricity needs, we need more flexible systems that can be built quickly and deployed anywhere at a large scale. That’s the only way we’re going to achieve and maintain energy security and independence. Airloom’s proprietary, US-manufactured turbines do just that: replacing bulky, costly models with low-cost, compact designs that generate more energy in less space. This groundbreaking marks a key milestone in validating our power curve and achieving essential cost efficiencies for wind energy.”

Traditional horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) are becoming less cost-competitive and harder to construct. Made in low volumes and at massive scales, this approach has resulted in restricted innovation, limited sites for deployment, and stagnation in the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). In contrast, Airloom Energy is designing the next generation of turbines that will contribute to the energy mix while yielding substantial cost savings and improvements in efficiency—even without subsidies.

“Breaking ground on a first pilot site is a major inflexion point for any wind technology product. Airloom has reached this point with remarkable speed and clarity of purpose. What sets Airloom apart is not only its innovative architecture, but the calibre of the team behind it, who understand how to move from concept to scale with tenacity and rigour. This pilot is more than a test site; it’s the beginning of a fundamentally new approach to resilient renewable energy generation: wind energy that’s faster to deploy, land-efficient, and built for the energy challenges ahead,” said Paul Judge, former head of Product Management at GE Onshore Wind and advisory board member for Airloom Energy.

The pilot site groundbreaking in Wyoming keeps Airloom on track to complete the project ahead of the commercial demonstrations of the start-up’s next-generation turbines in 2027. At this site, Airloom will install and test its turbine designs to validate its power curve, as well as ensure production efficiency, refine deployment costs, and expand maintenance documentation. Beyond standard onshore integration, Airloom Energy will also evaluate future use cases of its technology in domains such as defence, disaster relief, and offshore wind energy generation.

In October 2024, Airloom Energy raised USD 7.5 million in a seed financing round with participation from Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, WYVC, Crosscut Ventures, WovenEarth Ventures, and others. An additional USD 5 million in Energy Matching Funds was secured in the same year from Wyoming, along with a USD 1.25-million non-dilutive contract from the United States Department of Defence.

The start-up’s goal is simple: to build next-generation turbines with features like utility-scale capacity, low-cost design, reliability, and maximum energy production per square kilometre.

Meet The Key Technology

Backed by some of the biggest names in the renewable energy sector (Breakthrough Energy, Lowercarbon Capital, WovenEarth Ventures, and Crosscut), Airloom’s next-generation turbines efficiently convert kinetic energy into mechanical energy. Their simple and robust structure enables a large swept area without massive structures. These turbines can also survive some of the harshest operational environments. Also, Airloom’s site layout and smaller wake allow it to create more energy in less space.

Conventional turbines are made in low volumes using specialised materials and are shipped with specialised transportation equipment. To install them, renewable energy companies need large, specialised cranes and specially trained crews, making projects more expensive. Airloom has disrupted this practice by lowering the cost of wind energy. While first-of-a-kind Airloom systems will be expensive, cost reductions will result from increased scale, higher availability, lower capital costs, and extended system lifetimes.

Airloom Energy’s modular turbines feature rectangular swept areas instead of traditional circular ones, increasing wind capture and improving energy conversion efficiency. This meets the growing need to generate more power in less space as land use and regulations evolve. Also, unlike traditional turbines, which can take up to five years to deploy, Airloom’s turbines built with low-cost, mass-manufacturable components and minimal infrastructure needs can be installed in under a year, supporting more reliable energy generation through simplified supply chains.

By using smaller, mass-manufacturable parts made in the United States to simplify transportation, installation, and maintenance, Airloom Energy can deploy its wind turbines at low-wind sites, those with height or viewability restrictions such as airports or military stations, or even in difficult-to-access mountainous areas or islands with minimal infrastructure.

Imagine paying A$39 per day to park your car, while you visit your ailing child in the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. For Australian families already struggling in a cost-of-living crisis, hospital parking fees are piling further agony, especially during a health crisis. Parking at hospitals is a significant source of income. Let’s call it “Parking Syndrome.”

In 2024, public hospitals in New South Wales received nearly $51 million from parking fees. That was more than the $30.02 million in 2023. As per RMIT University’s senior faculty members Lisa Farrell and Meg Elkins, while the move may have sounded tempting for health infrastructures to exploit a captive market, the reality is much more complex, if one brings disciplines like economics, finance, and behavioural business into play.

Mismatch between supply and demand

Price is the means by which supply and demand are balanced, according to basic economics. This price is referred to as the equilibrium price. When supply cannot keep up with demand, prices increase.

“Due to the limited number of parking spots, urban hospitals face market conditions that, predictably, result in higher prices. In certain situations, however, suppliers may charge more than the equilibrium price if there is still a need for parking despite the cost, according to economics. In short, this ‘inelastic demand’ implies that a captive audience can be charged more,” said Farrell and Elkins.

“Hospital visitors and patients could be considered a captive audience. Although public transportation is well-served by many hospitals, patients and visitors are frequently too ill or time-constrained to utilise it. They are therefore forced to pay for parking. Visitors must drive because public transportation is either non-existent or very limited in rural hospitals. Do hospitals have a reason for charging such high prices, or are they price gouging, setting prices above what is deemed fair or reasonable, or are they exploiting the inelastic demand for parking?” asked the duo.

Hospital parking lots in desirable areas attract not only patients and visitors but also city workers and tourists seeking convenient parking. Parking spaces are kept available for hospital users by discouraging these users with high fees. High costs discourage overstaying in hospitals. Because of this, they are unable to engage in non-hospital activities (like shopping) following their hospital visit or appointment and before getting back to their cars.

Hospitals also charge high prices to raise revenue for health care. NSW Health said in a statement to the ABC earlier this year that additional funds generated from parking are used to fund medical facilities and services.

Makes sense to encourage visitors

“However, it might be a false economy to increase parking fees in order to fund hospital budgets. We are aware that hospital visitors play a significant part in patients’ recuperation. Therefore, extended hospital stays for their loved ones may result if high parking fees discourage guests or caregivers. More visits could result from less expensive parking, which would cut down on hospital stays and save a lot of money per patient,” remarked Farrell and Elkins.

Lisa witnessed this firsthand when her father, who has dementia, was admitted to the hospital.

“The hospital provided free hospital parking and round-the-clock visitor access for caregivers, like my mother, in this instance. For dementia patients, who frequently become confused while in the hospital, access should be available around the clock. Known as sundowning, this disorientation usually gets worse in the evening. The presence of carers allowed staff to concentrate on medical concerns. It made it easier to visit during off-peak hours, when parking is less of a problem and dementia patients usually require additional assistance,” she noted.

The high demand for a limited number of parking spots, which are rationed to those with the most money, is reflected in the high parking prices. Rationing based on need, or improving patient well-being, is a better option. Charging different users different prices is the economic solution.

By making concessions, the majority of hospitals have already accomplished this. However, concessions may vary by state or hospital. It can be difficult for some people to determine whether they qualify for concession-rate parking, and not everyone is aware that it is available.

“Therefore, before parking at a hospital, be aware of the fees and any available discounts if you are worried about the cost. The websites of most hospitals have this information. At the moment, most concessions are determined by income, including having a concession card. However, we must make a bigger change to offer need-based concession rates. For instance, accommodations are needed for long-stay patients to promote their well-being. Hospital parking fees for regular users should be capped nationwide, according to the media campaign,” Farrell and Elkins observed.

Although most parking lots have a daily cap, frequent visitors may soon accrue substantial bills from hospital visits for weeks or months. Many patients incur yearly parking expenses, especially those who need frequent treatments like dialysis.

Concession rates for hospital visitors should be granted based on need rather than just income. Patient welfare and the value of visitors to the healing process should guide needs. Proper rules are required towards this direction, especially for those who use the hospital parking lot, to streamline the procedure.

Considerations for long-term solutions, such as relocating hospitals away from desirable locations, are important when building new facilities or expanding existing ones. This approach could reduce the appeal of parking for individuals who do not use hospitals. Healthcare systems face the challenge of balancing the ethical principles of access and equity, which are vital for providing essential care, with the operational necessity of cost recovery.

“Meanwhile, with 1,190 parking spaces, Blackpool Victoria Hospital was ranked seventh in the UK. Costing £2.70 per car for two hours of parking, the car park can earn a potential revenue of £3,213 within two hours at maximum car park occupancy. This placed Blackpool Victoria, after Salford Royal, Darent Valley, Furness General, and Poole, as the fifth cheapest hospital in the UK to park at,” said Farrell and Elkins.

Moreover, there are 3,388 parking spaces at Manchester Royal Infirmary, which has the most parking spaces and could make over £10,000. Because it serves a large area and has a high volume of patients, staff, and visitors, this Manchester hospital, one of the biggest in the UK, needs a sizable parking facility. At £7.00 for two hours, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has the highest parking fee. Given that the hospital is situated in one of London’s wealthiest neighbourhoods, the cost of parking there might be a reflection of both the area’s high parking demand and the hospital’s location.

Hospital parking fees, while justified as revenue sources, can impose emotional and financial burdens on vulnerable families. A shift to need-based concessions and ethical pricing is urgently needed.

Sebastien Vigneron has been named the new CEO of Wisk Aero, a market leader in advanced air mobility (AAM) and a Boeing subsidiary. He takes over the position after Brian Yutko leaves to take a senior leadership role in Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes Division (BCA). Vigneron joins his new role with a solid foundation in programme leadership and aerospace engineering.

He was instrumental in advancing the development of Wisk’s Generation 6 aircraft while he was Senior Vice President of Engineering and Programmes. He oversaw the coordination of hardware and software engineering, flight and systems testing, simulation, and autonomy, among other important technological areas.

His hiring comes at a critical time for Wisk as the company moves forward with its certification process and prepares its Gen 6 aircraft for flight. Wisk’s long-term objectives and Sebastien Vigneron’s in-depth understanding of the aircraft development lifecycle put him in a strong position to guide the business as it moves closer to commercial launch.

Former Wisk CEO Yutko will join Boeing Commercial Airplanes as Vice President of Product Development. Yutko will continue to oversee strategy and keep Boeing and Wisk in a supportive relationship in his new role.

Wisk, a separate company owned by Boeing, is dedicated to achieving its goal of becoming the first autonomous aircraft to carry passengers in the US market. For the company’s innovative aspirations in the future of air travel, the leadership change signifies both continuity and new impetus.

Who Is Sebastien Vigneron?

Born and reared in France, Sebastien Vigneron initially became interested in technology and engineering. He studied aerospace engineering to further this interest, graduating from one of France’s top engineering schools. His education prepared him for a career in the aerospace industry, where he has established himself as a leader who prioritises strategy, innovation, and operational excellence.

Early in his career, Vigneron worked for a number of well-known aerospace firms, including Airbus. He specialised in the creation and administration of intricate engineering projects while gaining experience in a variety of technical and leadership capacities. Vigneron held executive positions at a number of other aerospace and aviation-related businesses before joining Wisk as CEO. He worked on projects involving aircraft systems, engineering design, and strategic development. Vigneron spent the early part of his career, six years in total, at Dassault Aviation, where he worked on the Falcon 5X, 6X and 7X programmes, including as aerodynamics group lead.

Then he moved to Bombardier in 2011, where he spent eight years and contributed to the CSeries (now called the Airbus 220) commercial aircraft programme and Bombardier’s Global business-jet programmes. Under his watch, Bombardier achieved the Global 7500’s certification in 2018. Vigneron then took a job with Virgin Hyperloop, which had been developing a high-speed passenger transportation system involving a magnetically levitated vehicle travelling inside a tube.

Sebastien Vigneron was in charge of spearheading new business endeavours, alliances, and technological developments at a large aerospace company prior to joining Wisk as the Executive Vice President of Strategy and Innovation. Among the advanced aviation technologies he has contributed to are electric and autonomous flight systems. As the leader of Wisk, a company dedicated to the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban air mobility, Vigneron was a perfect fit due to his extensive knowledge of both aerospace engineering and business strategy.

He also led aerodynamics for that company’s supersonic business jet research programme and contributed to the Solar Impulse programme to develop a solar-powered experimental aircraft, a project that spurred Vigneron’s interest in innovating new types of aerospace products.

It is anticipated that Vigneron’s leadership will be crucial to developing Wisk’s autonomous flight technology and introducing cutting-edge air transportation options to international markets. Vigneron has established himself as a pivotal figure in the quickly developing field of urban air mobility thanks to his long aerospace career and strategic vision.

Certification Challenge Lies Ahead

Sebastien Vigneron believes he has the aircraft-development experience needed to lead the company’s transition into the critical phase of flight testing and certification.

“I have 20 years of experience developing new aerospace products, in the US, in Canada, in Europe. I have covered the entire product-development life cycle, from a clean sheet… through detailed design, build, test, certification, entry into service,” he told FlightGlobal.

Talking about his leadership style, Vigneron remarked, “I bring a good blend of the rigour and discipline of aerospace product development and \[of] certification… I am able to navigate both sides of that world, and I’m able to maintain the right balance. I always assume good intent, and I believe in the people. I work for my team. I support my team. And I do everything I can so that they can be successful.”

Stating that the CEO transition does not reflect any shift to Wisk’s broader strategy, Vigneron noted, “The mission is not changing. The game plan is not changing.”

Wisk has flown several eVTOL designs in recent years but is now inching closer to beginning flight tests of its Gen 6 prototype, the variant it aims to bring through certification. The new CEO said that the company is eyeing the upcoming summer for the first flight of the prototype while certifying the eVTOL before the end of the decade.

The Gen 6 air taxi will carry four passengers, have 78nm (145km) of range, fly at 110-120kt (204-222 km/h), and charge in 15 minutes. The eVTOL will come equipped with fixed wings and 12 propellers mounted in pairs on wing-mounted booms. All 12 propellers produce lifting thrust, while the forward six props also rotate to provide forward thrust. While pilotless, the air taxis are monitored by humans on the ground.

While there are questions about whether the battery technology has advanced sufficiently to enable high-frequency, taxi-like flights, Vigneron insists the electric-propulsion technology is up to the task.

“I was very much attracted by the prototyping mindset, pushing the boundaries, bold innovation, quick iteration, learning by doing,” says Vigneron. Like other eVTOL developers, Wisk faces a tall task in bringing an aircraft as novel as its Gen 6 through certification. However, the company and its competitors at least now have a roadmap, as the Federal Aviation Administration in 2024 issued both a rule defining air taxi operational and pilot-training requirements and an advisory providing guidance for certificating air taxis under existing airworthiness regulations.

“It’s laying out the path for certification… It’s all going in the right direction. The principles we need to follow exactly, and the methodology, is the same. How do we show compliance to those things? That’s where the challenge is,” Sebastien Vigneron noted.

And while regulators have never approved types like eVTOLs before, Vigneron says the certification process, specifically the certification “guiding principles,” is the same as for conventional aircraft. The company’s system integration test rigs are “firing on all cylinders,” said Vigneron, while adding, “We are deep into the weeds of safety-of-flight testing right now.”

Wisk is also conducting aerodynamic evaluations of a subscale Gen 6 model at Boeing’s V/STOL Wind Tunnel facility in Philadelphia. Those wind-tunnel tests will last several months, Vigneron said, while adding, “We are going to be doing a lot of endurance testing, durability testing… We need to get a lot of hours under the belt.”

Wisk operates “completely independently from Boeing” but has access to some of the aerospace giant’s resources, such as the wind-tunnel facility, Vigneron said. Wisk has also been leveraging Boeing’s manufacturing capabilities in Seattle and in the Mesa area for so many different components.

“We are exploring new ways of doing product development, new ways of running a development programme. We bring all those learnings back to Boeing, and that’s why the connection with Boeing product development makes sense. We are learning from each other,” Vigneron concluded.

Most of Wisk’s competitors, Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Eve Air Mobility, and Beta Technologies, are developing air taxis that will, initially at least, be controlled by an onboard human pilot. However, Wisk is undertaking the more ambitious goal of developing and certifying an autonomous air taxi from the start.

Sebastien Vigneron sees autonomy enabling air taxis to be economically viable, where operators will not incur the cost of employing pilots, with pilotless aircraft having room for one more paying passenger.

In April 2025, the annual inflation rate in Saudi Arabia was 2.3%, which was the same as it was in April 2024 and the previous month of this year. The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) released its monthly statistics bulletin, which showed that an 11.9% increase in apartment rents had the biggest impact on inflation or the Consumer Price Index.

Housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel prices increased by 6–8%, according to the report. This increase was primarily caused by an 8–1% increase in residential rents, which was influenced by an 11–9% increase in apartment rents. Because this category has a weight of 25%, its increase had a major effect on the ongoing rate of annual inflation in April.

Prices for food and drink increased by 2 percentage points, with the price of vegetables rising by 9 percentage points. Due to a 5.6% increase in post-secondary non-tertiary education fees, the education category saw a 1.3% increase.

Prices for jewellery, watches, and valuable antiques increased by 21.9%, contributing to a 31.5% increase in the miscellaneous personal goods and services category, according to the GASTAT report. Restaurant and hotel prices also rose by 2%, driven by a 2% increase in catering services.

However, due to a 3 to 5% drop in the cost of furniture, carpets, and floor coverings, the home furnishings and equipment category saw a 1 to 8% drop in prices. Ready-made clothing prices dropped 2 points, contributing to a 1.2% drop in prices for the clothing and footwear category.

A 1.8% drop in the purchase price of cars contributed to a 2.1% drop in prices for the transportation category.

In the Consumer Price Index, the recreation and culture category saw a 0.4 per cent drop in prices, while the transportation, communications, and health categories saw a 0.1% drop. In April 2025, tobacco product prices stayed mostly the same.

Saudi’s economy, meanwhile, grew in the first quarter, supported by activity in the non-oil sector as the Gulf nation pushes on to diversify away from hydrocarbons, under the ambitious “Vision 2030” agenda. Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 2.7% year-on-year in the first quarter.

GASTAT has also updated and expanded its data collection and said its nominal and real GDP time series have been revised accordingly.

Fahad al Dossari, the President of the government body, said, “The demand from everybody, when we met with them, they were always hungry for more details, more statistics, more data. So, the local demand is the main driver for this.”

The authority has also increased the weighting of the non-oil sector to better align with international standards and data quality. Under the new parameters, non-oil activities increased by 4.2% in the first quarter, in addition to the growth of government activities by 3.2%.

“Private sector activity remained solid, which we continue to see reflecting the progress with the investment programme. There was a notable quarterly jump in government activity, likely boosted by the relatively supported oil price in the first quarter,” said Monica Malik, chief economist at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, while interacting with Reuters.

“We expect to see some pullback in government spending from the second quarter with the sharply lower oil price, which is expected to dampen government activity for the remainder of the year,” she concluded.
