Singapore has started the construction of Tuas Port’s second phase with the installation of the first concrete structure for the wharf, according to the Straits Times.

The Tuas Port will be Singapore’s first next-generation terminal owing to its physical and digital integration with the supply chain network. The first phase of Maritime and Port Authority’s (MPA) window portal will be launched by the end of the year.

Last year, the MPA awarded the Tuas Terminal Phase 2 reclamation project to Penta-Ocean Construction, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Boskalis International. The contract is worth $1.46 billion.

When the Tuas port construction is completed it will have a capacity to handle up to 65 million TEUs each year. The phase 2 project’s team will adopt modern construction technology including an automated curing system and artificial intelligence to closely watch the construction site.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Dr Lam Pin Min said “MPA will be enhancing its seaward capabilities by phasing in a fleet of next-generation patrol craft from February 2020 over the next three years.” The Tuas Terminal will be developed in four phases over a span of 30 years. The phase 2 reclamation work is expected to be completed by 2027.

“The proximity of Tuas Terminal to the industrial hinterland and the shipyards forms a more integrated supply chain ecosystem. This could reduce logistics cost and create new opportunities for synergistic port-industry activities. The possibilities are immense,” he said.

The MPA also announced that the current fleet of patrol vessels will be replaced with seven next-generation patrol crafts. The first six crafts will be commissioned in February 2020, and the bigger patrol craft will be launched in the first quarter of 2021.
