										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Vietnam will tap into 10GW of offshore wind energy by 2030, according to an assessment carried out by the World Bank and Danish Energy Agency, media reports said. The findings were presented to the Vietnamese government to develop an offshore wind sector in Vietnam.</p>
<p>The assessment also found out that Vietnam has an estimated potential of 160GW offshore wind energy within 5 km and 100 km from shore.</p>
<p>In this context, Ministry of Industry and Trade director general of electricity and renewable energy Hoang Tien Dung told the media, “The government of Vietnam is always committed to the development of a sustainable energy sector and the timing now is very critical with our national Power Development Plan 8 preparation by the Ministry of Trade and Industry being underway.</p>
<p>“We, therefore, highly appreciate advice and recommendations from Denmark and the World Bank, our long term partners who have possessed many years of experience and knowledge in renewable energy ahead of us.”</p>
<p>The two organisations have also made several recommendations to the Vietnamese government, which they will take into consideration.</p>
<p>Recently, GE Renewable Energy secured contracts to supply a total of 12 units of GE’s 5MW-158 Cypress wind turbines to support construction of the Quoc Vinh Soc Trang and Lac Hoa Soc Trang wind farms, located in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.</p>
<p>Vietnam will soon unveil its Power Development Master Plan 8 (PDP 8) for the next decade. The PDP is expected to provide a roadmap to end Vietnam’s reliance on carbonised energy sources and move toward renewable energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its primary source of energy.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to finance the development of Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar PV power plant in Vietnam. The bank has agreed to allocate a loan of $37 million to Da Nhim–Ham Thuan–Da Mi Hydro Power (DHD) for the development of the floating solar power plant in Vietnam.</p>
<p>DHD will install the 47.5 megawatt floating solar power plant on the man-made reservoir of its existing 175 megawatt Da Mi hydropower plant in Vietnam. This will also be the largest first large-scale installation of floating solar panels in Vietnam.</p>
<p>The mega project is part of Vietnam’s plan to decrease its dependency on energy from dirty sources such as coal and boost energy production from renewable sources.</p>
<p>With regard to the floating solar plant, ADB Private Sector Operations Department Deputy Director-General, Christopher Thieme said that the pairing of hydropower and solar energy sources is a simple but highly innovative achievement. He stated that the same can now be replicated not only in Vietnam but throughout Asia and the Pacific.</p>
<p>Out of the $37 million allocated to the floating solar plant in Vietnam, around $15 million comes from the Canadian Climate Fund for private sectors in Asia, an initiative by the Canadian government to encourage Asian countries to adopt green projects.</p>
<p>Chairman of the Board of DHD Nguyen Trong Oanh told the media that, “This project aligns with DHD’s strategy of investing in renewable energy to decrease dependence on fossil fuel, contribute to energy security, mitigate climate change, and promote environmental protection and sustainable socio-economic development.”</p>
<p>Last month, ADB also agreed to support the development of the Tina River hydropower project in the Solomon Islands. Besides allocating a loan of $18 million, ADB will also provide the project with a grant of $12 million.</p>
