Shell’s subsidiary Shell Aviation plans to support Europe’s first sustainable aviation fuel production plant in the Netherlands. Shell Aviation will provide technical and commercial expertise to the sustainable aviation fuel plant, the media reported.

Europe’s first dedicated sustainable aviation plant is called DSL-01 plant. The DSL-01 plant will be located in Delfzijl, the Netherlands and is expected to be operational in 2020. Europe’s first sustainable aviation fuel plant is designed to produce 100,000 metric tons of fuel each year. This could further result in reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of nearly 270,000 metric tons.

The DSL-01 plant is an important project for the development of the sustainable aviation fuel market. Shell will play a key role in accelerating the sustainable aviation fuel plant’s development.

The plant will produce naphtha and 15,000 metric tons of bioLPG each year. SkyNRG will run the DSL-01 plant. SkyNRG is a market leader for sustainable aviation fuel.

The DSL-01 plant will produce fuel made from waste and residue streams such as cooking oil, the media reported. It will be powered by sustainable hydrogen manufactured in the Groningen Seaport.

The overall benefits of the plant will reduce the fuel’s carbon emissions by 85 percent compared to jet fuels, according to the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials data. Shell Aviation might purchase the fuel produced by the sustainable aviation fuel plant, media reports said.

Anna Mascolo, vice president of Shell Aviation, told the media that, “When it comes to carbon emissions, the aviation industry needs collaboration among industry players, it needs support to drive technical innovation and investments, and last but not least it needs a multiple set of solutions that help drive a faster transition to a net zero emissions world.”
