Terminal Portuario de Guayaquil (TPG) has expanded its dock in addition to other developments for improving the port. TPG is a subsidiary of Chile-based SAAM Ports, which comprises six ports including the San Antonio Terminal Internacional. TPG is a private port focused on foreign trade industry.
Ecuador’s Minister of Transportation Gabriel Martinez, told the media, “The 660m-dock expansion at Terminal Portuaria de Guayaquil gives Ecuador competitive potential to be on par with regional and global port growth. Investments like these are possible when the government creates the right conditions and sees [the private sector] as complementary and a key component of the country’s economic development.”
It is reported that the modernisation of the port commenced in the first half of last year. The development included expansion of berth from 480 meters to 660 meters across the northern and southern docks.
TPG CEO Luis Enrique Navas told the media, “Times are tough for the world, but we know that foreign trade drives recovery and our terminal wants to place itself at the service of foreign trade, better supporting the entire logistics chain with a modern, efficient and safe offering.” The dredging work has brought the access channel to a depth of 13.7 meters in low tide. With that, the terminal has incorporated seven sophisticated reach stackers and heavy duty trucks. This will also help the berthing of longer shipping vessels.
Established ports and logistics companies are now resuming work to further support their performance in light of unexpected circumstances in the future.
