Sharjah Airport recorded 13.6 million passengers in 2019, with a 13 percent year-on-year growth compared to 12 million passengers in the previous year, according to the Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA). The airport’s passengers data was revealed during a meeting held in Sharjah.
The meeting was led by Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority. Also, the SAA during the meeting highlighted the airport’s achievements last year and discussed plans that will be executed through 2020.
Sharjah Airport has developed expansion plans to drive growth. The airport is expected to increase its capacity to 20 million passengers annually by 2025.
The air freight sector in particular grew to more than 148.751 thousand tonnes in 2019, a local media report said. Last December alone recorded 11,674 tonnes. The air freight volume from last January to December reached 15.290 thousand tonnes, marking an increase of 12.12 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to Ali Salim Al Midfa, “During 2019, there were a number of achievements in all areas — including services that aimed to enhance customer happiness and provide an exceptional passenger experience.”
Ali Salim Al Midfa noted that the aircraft traffic increased 6.45 percent to 86,5000 take-offs and landings compared to 812600 in 2018. The increase can be attributed to the additional airlines and new flights in the Sharjah Airport, the media reports said.
