Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and South Korea President Moon Jae recently announced the completion of the first commercial nuclear project in Barakah, Al Dhafra Region.
According to Emirates News Agency, as the unit 1 of the project is completed, the focus shifts to ensuring operational readiness in order to seek approval of operating license by the Federal Authority of Nuclear Regulation (FANR). Units 2, 3 and 4 have reached 92%, 81%, and 66% of completion respectively.
The development is the outcome of an alliance between Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and its prime contractor and joint venture partner, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), reported Arabian Business.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said: “This is a historic moment in our nation’s development as we celebrate the construction completion of Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. The UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme will play a strategic role in the growth of our nation by enhancing our energy security, diversifying our economy, and creating employment opportunities for our people, thereby helping secure the future of generations to come.”
