South African President Jacob Zuma has stepped down from his position after his own party exerted intense pressure on him.
Mr Zuma’s ANC party has been formally discussing for a while about removing Zuma from his position. But Zuma denied doing so. Julius Sello Malema, an opposition leader and former member of ANC posted on Twitter on the 4th of this month that Mr Zuma disagreed to step down from his position.
Now with Zuma’s resignation coming in, the resignation has been implemented effective immediately.
While making a formal televised statement of officially stepping down from his position, Zuma also stated that he didn’t willingly resign from his position. He was told that if he won’t resign and he would be removed in the Parliament with a vote of no-confidence.
The 75 year old President said: “I fear no motion of no confidence or impeachment … I will continue to serve the people of South Africa and the ANC. I will dedicate my life to continuing to work for the execution of the policies of our organization.”
“No life should be lost in my name. The ANC should never been divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect.”
“As I leave I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC, the organisation I have served… all of my life.”
