Africa-based telecom giant MTN has revealed that it will start rolling out 5G in Ghana by 2023, media reports said. The telco is also aiming to achieve 98 percent 4G coverage in the country by 2022.
Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh told the media, “Almost every 10 years, there is a new technology. 4G was launched in 2016 so ideally, 5G should be expected somewhere around 2026 but will have to be rollout around 2023 as Covid-19 has accelerated digitalisation.”
He further revealed that Mr. Adadevoh in the last 25 years, MTN Ghana has invested over $6 billion in infrastructure with 2021 seeing the highest investment in a year of over $200 million.
Earlier this month, MTN Group announced its partnership with Flutterwave, Africa’s leading payments technology company. This partnership will allow businesses integrating Flutterwave in African nations such as Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia to receive payments through MTN’s MoMo.
In this regard, Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, CEO and founder of Flutterwave told the media, “Africa has one of the highest growth rates for mobile money adoption and e-commerce in the world. It makes sense that we help provide a seamless payment method to support and ensure African businesses reap the full benefits of the e-commerce boom in the region.
“Our goal has always been to grow a new wave of prosperity in Africa by creating more avenues for businesses in Africa to accept payments. With this partnership, we can achieve this while creating endless possibilities for our customers.”
