LEGO introduces plant-based play range

LEGO, sugarcane, sustainable toys, polyethylene, plastic toys, environmental responsibility, plastic waste, global standards

The LEGO Group, famed for its line of plastic construction toys has announced the upcoming launch of ‘sustainable’ bricks made from sugarcane.

The plastic brick maker is one of the most recent companies to become more active in the global fight against plastic waste. Its production of plant-based polyethylene pieces has already begun.

The sustainable LEGO play elements will be introduced in a range of varieties which include leaves, bushes and trees. Tim Brooks, Vice President, Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group said in a statement, the company aims to deliver a global positive impact using sustainable materials in children’s products.

We are proud that the first LEGO elements made from sustainably sourced plastic are in production and will be in LEGO boxes this year. This is a great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all LEGO bricks using sustainable materials,” he confirmed.

The company’s new sustainable products are made from sugarcane-based polyethylene, which is soft, durable and flexible plastic, and will be identical to products sourced from conventional plastic.

Mr Brooks added: “LEGO products have always been about providing high quality play experiences giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play.”

High-level testing has been done to ensure the plant-based plastic meets the global standards.

“Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene.”
