Twitter said that the idea of an edit button was not inspired by a poll.

Social media giant Twitter has announced that it has started working on an edit button which was famously advocated recently by its largest shareholder Elon Musk. According to the company, it will start testing the feature shortly.

The company said that they have been working on the feature that is prevalent in rival Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram over the last year. Twitter added that the feature will be first made available to Twitter Blue users which is a paid version of the otherwise free app.

In a tweet made on April 6, Twitter also clarified that they have not been inspired by the poll conducted by Musk on his timeline after emerging as the largest shareholder.

The tweet by Twitter Comms said, “Now that everyone is asking… yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year! no, we didn’t get the idea from a poll, we’re kicking off testing within Twitter Blue Labs in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible.”

The issue was further elaborated on by Jay Sullivan, Head of Consumer Product at Twitter.

He said that the company has been working to ensure to build the edit button in a safe way. He explained, “Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation. Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.”

He added this is the reason that the edit button will take some time to materialize after the company is done receiving all inputs and “adversarial thinking”.
