Levi Nyagura, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe has been arrested pertaining to an investigation by Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC). The commission is inquiring the university’s PhD award to the former first lady Grace Mugabe.
For the illegal implementation of his position, Nyagura was detained by the country’s anti-corruption agency on Friday night.
Mrs Mugabe, who enrolled for a PhD in 2014, received doctorate only in a few months, while it usually takes a couple of years to finish it.
The investigation started after a petition was submitted by a university staff.
The prosecution accused that not only was Mrs Mugabe awarded the PhD in the same year following Nyagura’s instructions, but the UZ council and academic committee was completely unaware of the situation.
The sociology department has withdrawn responsibility of Mrs Mugabe and consequently, conferring the degree. Prosecutors stated that Mrs Mugabe did not meet the minimum prerequisites to receive the PhD.
Advocate Lewis Uriri, who is representing Nyagura, appealed that his client is not guilty of the charges. Nyagura was remanded to March 5 on a bail amount of $200. However, Nyagura was instructed not to interfere with state witnesses in the ongoing investigation.
