Over 100,000 employees in the UK expected to take part in the world’s biggest ‘lights-out’ display

March 4, 2015: With just under one month to go, some of the UK’s biggest business names are helping to build a brighter future by supporting WWF’s Earth Hour, a symbolic lights out event that focuses the world’s attention on our planet, and the need to protect it. On 28th March, at 8.30pm, thousands of businesses globally will show their support for the cause. Over 100,000 employees will be taking part this Earth Hour — the world’s biggest ‘lights out’ display.

Liz Lowe, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Manager, Coca-Cola GB, said:  “Coca-Cola is delighted to support Earth Hour for our fourth year running. We’ll be switching off our lights on our advertisement at Piccadilly Circus as well as The London Eye. It’s a fantastic way to remind people to take care of the planet and something that all of us at Coca-Cola are proud to be part of too.”

BSkyB, a UK-based pan European satellite broadcasting company, will be running a ‘Switch Off’ campaign in the week leading up to the Earth Hour to get its staff engaged. Through the week there will be a chance to win prizes, eat from a low-carbon menu and dine by ‘starlight’ in the canteen. The week will culminate with Earth Hour, when all non-essential lights at its main campuses will be turned off.

Fiona Ball, Head of Responsible Business, BSkyB added: “Once again this year, we are absolutely delighted to be supporting Earth Hour. Sky has taken a clear stance on climate change with the challenging environmental targets we set ourselves in 2008 and Earth Hour gives us a great opportunity to raise awareness and reaffirm that position.”

Over nine million people in the UK took part in Earth Hour last year. Over 200 of the country’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben and Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul’s, Manchester Old Trafford, Wembley Stadium, joined forces with more than 1,000 businesses such as Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels and the Ambassador Theatre Group, to ensure hundreds of buildings switched off.

Shareen Brown, spokesperson for WWF-UK, said, “We’re thrilled that Coca-Cola, Sky and numerous other businesses will be taking part in Earth Hour this year and hope that they’ll inspire many more to get involved. By taking one simple step to switch off, you’ll be joining millions of people from around the world in this special celebration.”
