British luxury automobile giant Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled its new Jaguar Type 01 electric car, with features like an ultra-long bonnet, no rear window, and a “wealth of technology.”

However, the British carmaker, a wholly-owned subsidiary of India’s Tata Motors, chose New York as the unveiling venue for the vehicle, as it targets the potential for growth among the HNWI (High-Net Worth Individual) segment.

As per the JLR, the Type 01, an electric four-door GT car, having “subtle, muted shades,” will come with a starting price of USD 130,500, marking the “beginning of a new generation of Jaguar vehicles and a transformative new era.”

“Jaguar Type 01 is defined by exuberant proportions, with its low roofline, long bonnet, sleek silhouette, and dramatic presence. Starting from a single line and a blank sheet of paper, Jaguar Type 01 becomes the most aerodynamic and powerful Jaguar road car,” the automaker said further.

Type 01 is a bold, unique Jaguar that defies convention and has a clear lineage to iconic Jaguar vehicles of the past, such as the Jaguar E-type and Jaguar XJS.

However, Jaguar has taken a big gamble with a price tag, given the tepid enthusiasm for EVs in the world’s largest economy.

The performance of Type 01 will also be crucial for the Jaguar in terms of validating its Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), the bespoke platform developed exclusively for the automaker’s new generation of EVs.

“Delivering more than 1,000PS, always with power in reserve, Jaguar Type 01 provides a driving experience that is unmistakably Jaguar. Powered by an 850-volt electrical architecture, the Jaguar Type 01 delivers a 400-mile EPA range and can add 200 miles of range in 13 minutes using 350 kW charging,” the automaker remarked.

Stating that Type 01 establishes a new benchmark for Jaguar in power, aerodynamics, and technological advancement, Rawdon Glover, Managing Director, Jaguar, said, “From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distills the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era. Type 01 is the foundation of this British brand, which, like the E-type and XJS, makes no compromises between design and engineering in our quest to create desirable objects.

The Type 01’s design is inspired partly by the 1960s E-type Jaguars while retaining elements from the 2024 unveiling of the Jaguar Type 00 radical concept car in bright pink.

The launch of Type 01 comes at a time when JLR is looking to recover its commercial fortunes.

In 2025, a cyberattack halted the carmaker’s production activities and disrupted suppliers. The disruption, which lasted for over five weeks since late August, resulted in JLR reporting a pre-tax loss of 485 million pounds (approximately USD 638 million to USD 735 million) for the fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2025.

As part of its turnaround plan, the British luxury automaker has decided to reduce nearly 10% of its workforce through voluntary redundancies over the next two years.

JLR will also be shifting its entire lineup to EVs, despite a section of industry executives still being unconvinced about wealthy car buyers wanting to go electric.

However, most of the luxury carmakers have decided to introduce the element of electrification in their niche line-ups.

Ferrari earlier this year made its first attempt at an EV in the form of Luce.

Despite receiving significant criticism for straying from the Italian luxury automaker’s petrol models, the vehicle still achieved commercial success.

In September, JLR’s British peer Bentley unveiled its first EV, which will be priced at the bottom end of its range.
