Kenya plans to add 80MW of solar power to the national electricity grid in 2021. It is reported that the country currently generates 200 MW of electricity from solar power.

Kenya is considered to have an ideal landscape for generation solar-powered electricity because of its geographical location. The country receives abundant solar energy throughout the year, making it feasible for solar electric power generation.

Caroline Kimathi, principal renewable energy officer at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, told the media, “Private investors have received approval to build two solar electric plants at 40 MW each that will be operational in 2021.”

Essentially, solar energy is quite cost-effective and could also ensure full coverage, especially in the arid and semi-arid areas in the country. It is reported that the country is even planning to carry out a full review of its solar legal framework. The move will increase its uptake for households and the industrial sector, media reports said.

A set of standards have been recommended by the proposed regulation for importing solar equipment into the country. This in turn will help to protect consumers from mediocre products.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that  Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority is proposing rules for additional regulations on all aspects of developing solar systems in the country. This comprises mporting, distributing, installing, and maintaining of those solar systems. Several industrial customers in the country have been benefited by developments in renewable energy sources.
