British utility giant Octopus Energy and Prosperity Group have partnered to deliver the world’s largest “Zero Bills Site” to date. The first lot of the 300 “Zero Bills Homes” at the site in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, is due to be completed in 2028. Residents of these homes won’t receive home energy bills for at least 10 years.
“Launched in 2022, Octopus’ Zero Bills is an energy tariff that allows customers to move into homes featuring cutting-edge green tech, including a heat pump, battery and solar panels, with no home energy bills for at least five to 10 years, guaranteed,” Octopus remarked.
The announcement follows the announcement of the Keir Starmer government’s “Future Homes Standard,” which requires new homes to include technologies like heat pumps and solar panels, accelerating the shift towards cleaner, smarter and cheaper homes. Demand for these technologies is increasing fast, with new data from Octopus showing heat pump sales going up by 103%, followed by solar panel sales (78%) and Electric Vehicle charger enquiries (42%).
“So far, Octopus has approved over 6,000 Zero Bills homes through partnerships with developers, covering affordable and private rent, plus private and shared ownership properties. Octopus Energy aims to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, and has already rolled out the initiative in Germany, France, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom,” the utility player stated.
On the “Zero Bills Site,” Nigel Banks, Zero Bills director of Octopus Energy, remarked, “We’re finding ourselves in yet another energy crisis, and households are looking for ways to protect themselves from unpredictable energy prices. Living without a home energy bill is no longer a distant ambition – it’s a reality thanks to our Zero Bills tariff.”
“This partnership with Prosperity Group is a big step forward – together, we’re bringing Zero Bills living to hundreds of homes and showing what’s possible when smart tech is built in from day one,” the official stated.
Joe Billingham, chairman of Prosperity Group, said, “Our focus has always been on delivering high-quality, forward-thinking developments for both our investors and customers. Working with Octopus Energy allows us to integrate cutting-edge technology that not only enhances the living experience but also supports long-term investment performance.”
“With increasing regulatory pressure around EPC standards and tighter requirements on the horizon, schemes like this offer a clear route to future-proofing assets from day one, while meeting the growing demand for sustainable, energy-efficient homes,” he concluded.
