Port of Mombasa
Joseph Maina registered a new crane record of 51 moves per hour

The Port of Mombasa has registered 1,039 moves of containers per shift despite the ongoing pandemic, media reports said. In fact, Joseph Maina registered a new crane record of 51 moves per hour.

Joseph Maina is the crane operator for Kenya Ports Authority.

Kenya Sports Authority Acting Managing Director Rashid Salim, told the media, “Congratulations to the team, including crane operators, terminal tractor drivers, supervisors and all those involved because this is a combination of efforts. We are currently operating in a very different scenario whereby at the moment 240 container operations staff are out of station. KPA should continue maintaining its ship-to-shore gantry cranes ad tug masters to sustain or even surpass the record.”

It is reported that the Port of Mombasa plans to purchase new yard equipment next to ensure high-quality performance. The purchase of new yard equipment is anticipated to take place in the next financial year. In addition, twin hook spreaders and new ship to shore gantry cranes will be purchased to enhance performance and build operations.

Last week, it was reported that the port could face challenges in terms of losing business to Port of Dar es Salaam. This was anticipated to take place after Tanzania had protected traders from high demurrage costs, media reports said.
