ZTE and MTN Uganda unveil the first 5G standalone network in East Africa

The Chinese multinational telecom equipment giant has emerged as a vital provider of end-to-end services in the ICT sector

ZTE has forged a collaboration with MTN Uganda to unveil the first 5G Standalone (SA) network in East Africa.

The two organisations exhibited the 5G use cases on the 5G SA network during a demonstration at the Experience the Future Together event held in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

The network attained speeds of 1.494Gbps through 60Mhz spectrum, thereby enabling it to assist tools such as gigabit even in the absence of cloud XR, fibre connection, ultra-HD live telecast, remote surgery and autonomous driving.

Utilising ZTE’s end-to-end 5G apparatus also featuring common core, the network accomplished the overall separation of the signalling plane and the data plane without depending on the prevalent LTE core network EPC.

This network can also be improvised to facilitate other 5G tools like uRLLC and mMTC.

Bill Yi, vice president at ZTE said that the organisation is looking forward to working with MTN on emerging technologies.

He indicated that the Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment giant has been consistently endeavouring to upgrade its 5G prowess and has emerged as a vital provider of end-to-end services in the ICT sector worldwide.

The alliance is an extension of the already existing agreement between ZTE and MTN that was formed over a decade ago in 2009 in the spheres of core network, transmission, wireless, terminals, O&M services and energy infrastructure.

ZTE has so far been involved in 11 outlets of MTN. And, earlier this month, it teamed up with China Telecom to install China’s first remote apparatus enabled by the latest 5G technology for detecting coronavirus.
